A useful site for details of the company's fallen. A lot of Scots listed particularly for the Great War;
http://www.rbc.com/history/in_remembrance/ww1_list.html

I actually stumbled across this having mused over the list of names for Monzie (still to be photographed - inside church) in the Golden Book. It was the following man that caught my eye;

John William Auldjo
SERGEANT AULDJO, born at Edinburgh, Scotland, January 14, 1891. Home in Felton, Northumberland, England. Served two years in the Bank of Scotland. Joined Montreal, Quebec branch, May 10, 1910. Enlisted from Ciego de Avila, Cuba branch, in the 60th Battalion, July 1915. Also served with the 87th Battalion. Present at Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Lens, Passchendaele, and Ypres. Received Card of Honour from his battalion for performing his duty with gallantry and distinction at Ypres, Salient and Lens. Killed in action near Passchendaele, November 14, 1917.

I can only assume he worked in the bank (possibly Crieff) at one point.

I can ask the Bank Archives if you like. He's not on their Roll of Honour as he wasn't working for the bank at time of enlistment, but they'll hopefully have his records on file.

There's a 100-year embargo on these records, but they've been helpful on matters like this in the past so I can ask and see what I get.

He's included on my updated BoS Roll of Honour.

David,

If you could find out anything from the bank archives that would be most helpful, and interesting.

I've just double checked the Golden Book entry;

MONZIE

AULDJO, JOHN W., SGT., 87th Grenadier Guards of Canada

This must certainly be him - another mystery to unravel!

I've sent the Archives an email, but my contact is on holiday until Monday 1st October. Hopefully one of her colleagues will pick it up, but I won't hold my breath.

Got a reply from my contact this morning:

Quote:
Just to let you know, my colleague, Rosemary Moodie, found some a small amount of information on John William Auldjo in the staff records.
He joined the Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at Crieff branch in April 1908. He resigned a short time after in April 1910 to go to the Royal Bank of Canada. John's father was Irvine Auldjo, who was the Head Gardener at Monzie Castle in Crieff.
Hope this is of some help,
Regards
Sian

David,

Superb, these snippets are amazing - and it confirms the link to Monzie.
I thought he might have been in the Bank at Criefff sure enough. But his father was the gardener at Monzie Castle....well, well.

thanks

[quote="dhubthaigh"]SERGEANT AULDJO...Enlisted from Ciego de Avila, Cuba branch[quote]

A man with a 'Spanish' surname working in Cuba. At first glance who would have thought he was a Gardner's son from Crieff.

It's lucky that there is so much information about him because he's got very little information about hime on the CWGC site.

Name: AULDJO
Initials: J W
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Sergeant
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment)
Unit Text: 87th Bn.
Date of Death: 17/11/1917
Service No: 457791
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 24 - 26 - 28 - 30.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

He's certainly been remembered in several places, I wonder if he's commemorated in Edinburgh or Cuba?

The Royal Bank of Canada archivist, Beth Kirkwood, is really helpful and is also responsible for the records of Union Bank employees. These records are not yet on line.
The Union Bank of Canada was based in the Western Provinces, based at Winnipeg, during WW1 and merged with RBC in the 1920's.

Beth sent me the following info.
Union Bank of Canada
First World War Memorial Tablet
On July 11, 1922, His Honour Sir James Aikins, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, unveiled a memorial tablet dedicated to the memory of Union Bank of Canada employees who gave up their lives in the Great War. Bank President W.R. Allan presented the deed to 18 acres on Lake Winnipeg for the permanent site of the Lakeside Fresh Air Camp for Children as a gift of the Union Bank of Canada, "conjoining the memories of the Bank's heroic officers with the highest type of service to humanity." The tablet is constructed of a single shaft of Tyndall stone that was quarried in the Province of Manitoba and is situated on an elevation that juts into Lake Winnipeg. Centered on the façade is the oblong tablet upon which were craved the names of the 120 who composed the Union Bank of Canada's Roll of Honour. The crest of the Union Bank of Canada was cut into the stone above and immediately below was the inscription:

The deed of this property was presented to the Lakeside Fresh Air Camp for children in commemoration of those in the service of the Union Bank of Canada who at the call of King and Country left all that was dear to them, endured hardship, faced danger and finally passed out of sight of men by following duty and sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that their names not be forgotten.

H.B. Shaw, Vice-President and General Manager of the Union Bank was credited as the founder of the Lakeside Fresh Air Camp, initiating the movement in Winnipeg to establish the camp and guiding the committees that made the dream a reality.

Kindest regards,

Beth
