I have had a communication from Sharon Morrison , Archive Assistant at the Caithness Archives in Wick that the WICK POLICE OFFICE has a War Memorial to one of their CAITHNESS SHIRE CONSTABULARY Police Constables from the Great War .
The Memorial Plaque is located in the Wick Police Office enquiry area and has :
Force Crest
IN HONOURED MEMORY OF
PC - S.W. COWAN , MM
Pte SCOTS GUARDS
WHO DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE
39th MARCH 1918
( I note from my archive that CAITHNESS -SHIRE CONSTABULARY was formed in 1885 by the merger of Thurso Burgh Police and the Wick Burgh Police and from 1912 to 1952 the chief constable was William K Cormack . The force on 16th May 1969 became part of the Northern Constabulary ).

Soldiers effects on Ancestry has his pension etc going to an Isabella Grantee? Can't read the surname.... Also says he died at 10 Gen Hos France - wherever that may be.

Can I ask that until we have a confirmed image of a memorial that we keep threads like this to a minimum please?
We have a section for memorial discussion - http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewforum.php?f=178
any discussion of memorials we have not recorded here should go in the thread for each area.
The memorial sections of the forum should only be for memorials we ourselves have recorded and documented. I don't doubt this memorial exists, but we don't have a photo of it, so it should remain in the discussion area for the moment.
Thanks. |
