UKNIWM ref no. not listed
O/S map ref: NG 857 809

Poolewe War Memorial takes the form of a Celtic Cross and is situated in a small park to the left of Poolewe Post Office and looks over to the famous Inverewe Gardens.
A small cairn near the memorial tells that the path to it and general improvements to the site were made in October 2000.
It memorial is very unusual in that it lists more Second World War casualties than it does for the Great War. Nine men are listed for the Second War, 7 for the First.

WW1
Sgt. F. McIver, Seaforth Hrs.

(Glasgow Herald 7th April 1915)
"Information has been received that Sergeant Finlay McIver, of the 4th Seaforth Highlanders, previously reported wounded and missing succumbed on March 14 to the injuries he received at Neuve Chapelle. He took part in the historic engagement on March 11, and was employed cutting the barbed wire entanglements of the enemy when the pliers he was using were struck from his hands by a piece of shell and he was severely wounded in the abdomen. Sergeant McIver was a native of Poolewe and was a ghillie on the Inverewe estate. He was 33 years of age and was married."

I've read of a young lad from Norfolk asking a recruiting sergeant in 1914 where the furthest away regimental depot was -so his mother couldn’t find him - and he ended up enlisting in the Seaforth Highlanders. Don’t think this is the case here though.

33, Marylebone Lane is and old building and currently split between a tailor’s and barber’s. Could it have been the same 100 years ago?
