“A Committee was formed from the Congregation in 1946 to determine the most suitable Memorial to commemorate those members of the Church who had given their lives and those who had served in the armed forces during the Second World War. Two courses were decided upon, the first was that we should have a small but artistic Memorial placed inside the Church.
This was to take the form of a parchment book with the names of those who had served, suitably inscribed, the book to be placed inside a clear casket placed on the small table, itself a memorial to one of our member’s sons who had fallen in the First world War.
The Book was placed in the Church on Armistice Sunday, 9th November 1947 and it was unveiled by Brigadier J.W.H. Gow, Commandant of Erskine Hospital and dedicated by one of our elders, Professor Tindal.

“The work of our Minister under war conditions was beset with difficulties better to be imagined than described. The Manse itself was not spared the great sorrow that had visited other homes. By a strange coincidence a son of the Manse in the Second World War was also to lose his life serving his country in the Air Force just like Rev. MacMillan’s son. Rev. Blair’s elder son, Flying Officer Colin C. Blair, RAFVR, was lost somewhere over Norway and there is no record of the confirmation of his death. In 1946 a dedication ceremony was held on Sunday 13th October of a Communion Cup donated to the Church by Rev. and Mrs. Blair in memory of their son Colin.”

Flying Officer Colin Campbell Blair of the RAFVR was born in Glasgow and attended the High School of Glasgow. He graduated from the University in 1938 with an MA in History and Political Economy and travelled south to study for the Bar at Gray's Inn.
Blair joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in December 1938 and served in the early stages of the war with Army Co-operation Squadrons in England in France. He subsequently established a reputation for daring with the Spitfire Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. On 26 September 1941 he flew from Wick to photograph enemy installations at Stavanger and Christiansund in Norway, but did not return.

Extract from George Watson’s College.
Colin C. Blair, Flying Officer, Royal Air Force, was the elder son of the Rev . Duncan
Blair, Newlands (South) Church of Scotland, Glasgow, and formerly minister of
Braid Church, Edinburgh. Born on 19th April 1915, he attended Watson's from
1922 to 1926. He had taken a Double Honours degree in History and Economics at
Glasgow University, and had all but completed his courses at Gray's Inn, London, when he volunteered for the R.A.F. in 1939. He was lost over Norway in 1941.

The second proposal was that we endow a cottage in the grounds of Erskine Hospital for the use of a disabled ex-serviceman and his family in the hope that we would retain an interest in the family with a view to perhaps educating his children.
The recommendations of the committee were duly carried out but it was to be the spring of 1950 before the cottage that the congregation had donated to Erskine House was completed, dedicated and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Constable and their family.”
