This memorial is in the form of a celtic cross, with the names on panels on a wall to the side of it. Rather unusual, I haven't seen one like this before.

The two Great War panels. It might be because I have the flu right now, but I just cannot work out the ordering of these names:

The Second World War panels are in alphabetical order:

Hit bad weather conditions and at about 0200 the Halifax made a wheels down forced landing on the Eastern side of Heathfield Moor, approx 2 miles NW Pately Bridge. With injuries, Sgt Hall summoned help and they were taken to Highfield Farm. At least one died before the Ambulance arrived. Sgt Woollard is buried in Harrogate Cemetery, Sgt Reid and Godley were taken to Glasgow (Eastwood) and Cumbernauld Cemetery respectively.

Within fifteen months the 4 survivors had been killed in action. "

The following soldier is named on the War Memorial,

Name: PENNY, DAVID

Regards

Mal

Hi Mal,

The Memorials are actually in Cumbernauld Village (NS765760).

If you go to one of the mapping sites, and look for Baronhill (one end of Main Street), then look for the junction between that and Glasgow Road, choose 'Aerial View', you'll see an oval shaped wall. Zoom into that then choose 'Bird's Eye View', you can ususually rotate the image to get the best view.

DuNbarton shire is the county, DuMbarton is the town.

Cumbernauld is sometimes referred to as being in East Dunbartonshire, but also North Lanarkshire - don't know which is correct! Rolling Eyes

Top tip. Look on the internet for the local primary school and you'll find which local authority a community is in. In this case Cumbernauld is currently in North Lanarkshire. Ninety years ago it was in Dunbartonshire.

In 1975 Dunbartonshire became part of Strathclyde Region and smaller sub-divisions were created. Cumbernauld was in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Council up until 1994. (Kilsyth had been in Stirlingshire!)

With the break up of Strathclyde in 1994 instead of putting Cumbernauld and Kilsyth in either of their historic areas of East Dunbartonshire or Stirlingshire it was attached to North Lanarkshire.

Thanks

Adam

Looking at this old postcard image I think the name panel wall is a much later addition. There seems to have been a metal fence around the boundary of the site once upon a time as well.

The name panels are off to the side, so they may have been there at the tome of that photograph, just not in shot.

That is a beautiful Celtic Cross. I'm with Derek on this one. The wall containing the names looks 'new' and is built upon the edging blocks which weren't in the original picture. Unveiling report would be very interesting.

I don't think it's in it's original position.

I think it might have been located inside the cemetery.

The old postcard shows a slight hill behind it, but where it now sits, it is the highest point (by far) in the surrounding area.

On the War Graves Project there are 2 stones 'against' the railings which look remarkably like the ones in the old photo.

See: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=249&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&mforum=scottishwargraves
(Bryson, page 1 and Climie, page 2)

The cemetery (in theory) is behind where the memorials (in amomgst the trees in the background) but is not but not visible from any of the photos. The entrance to it is no more than 50 yards further along Baronhill on the same side of the road.
