DUNDEE SOLDIER KILLED BY SHELL. Private James Chalmers, of the Black Watch, Dundee man, has fallen on the battlefield. One of the officers of the deceased soldier's company writes home as follows: —"The company were holding a piece of line where the war is at its fiercest, and one of the endless shells fell quite close to Private Chalmers, and killed him at once." Private Chalmers, who was 38 years of age, was married, and is survived by a widow and eight children, who reside at 10 Court Street, Dundee. He enlisted in April, 1915, and had been at the front for considerable time. In civil life Private Chalmers was employed a carter with Mr D. Horsburgh, contractor, Dundee.
I found the death in the newspapers giving his widow as Mary Ann Michie.
I am finding it hard to find more about the man...

What sort of info are you looking for?

Medal rolls showed he was in 4th and merged 4th/5th Btn.
SNWM has him born Edinburgh.

His date of enlistement (as the newspaper report correctly says) would have been about mid April, 1915:

4105 - 02/04/1915
4266 - Chalmers
4405 - 01/05/1915
