Three sons of Charles Watson (solicitor) and of Sarah Elizabeth (Clennel) Watson of Greencroft, Annan.

WATSON, K. C. LOYAL N. LANCS.
Kenneth Clennell Watson – age 22 – Lieutenant, 10th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
Kenneth was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire before becoming an apprentice engineer at the Cochrane Company factory at Newbie, Annan. He had joined the Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers and as Private (1465) he was mobilised in August 1914. He was commissioned in September. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1915 and landed with the 10th LNLR at Boulogne. Kenneth was gassed and wounded and was evacuated to hospital in Glasgow in July 1916. He had returned to France only a few weeks before he was killed.
Born 1895 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour..


WATSON, P. B. CANADA.
Patrick Balfour Watson – age 26 – Private (437089) 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Patrick was educated at Annan Academy and at Warriston College in Moffat, Dumfriesshire and joined his father's business for three years before emigrating to Canada in 1911. He was working as a clerk for the Canadian Bank of Commerce at Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan and was a member of the local militia, the Saskatchewan Fusiliers, when he enlisted at Edmonton, Alberta in May 1915. He sailed from Canada with the 51st Battalion in April 1916 and was posted to the 15th Battalion in France but a month later he was killed.
Born 1890 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1916 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial.


WATSON, W. C. D. K.O.S.B.
William George Douglas Watson – age 36 – Captain, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was educated at Annan Academy and at Edinburgh Academy before he became a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1903. He served his apprenticeship and became a solicitor in his father's practice in Annan when he qualified in 1907. He was also joint agent of The Royal Bank of Scotland's branch in the town. He was commissioned in the Territorial 5th KOSB in March 1909 and was mobilised in August 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was promoted to Captain in October. Later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1881 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial, on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.

WHITE, A. B. K.O.S.B.
Alexander Blair White – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 5th Battalion attached to the 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was educated at Annan Academy before he joined the Annan branch of the Bank of Scotland. Later he joined the head office of the London City and Midland Bank and he enlisted from there in 1915 as Rifleman (4707) in the 2/12th Battalion (The Rangers) of the London Regiment. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1917 and was renumbered as Rifleman (417808). In July he was selected for officer training and, after a period as a cadet at Magdelen College in Cambridge, he was commissioned to the 5th KOSB in December 1917. Alexander was posted to the 7th/8th Battalion in April 1918 but was killed a few months later at Buzancy.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of Thomas Blair White and Charlotte Alice (Pendleton) White of Northgate, Annan.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial, on the Annan Parish Church memorial and on the London and City Bank Memorial at Canary Wharf, London.
In March 1914 Alexander received the Royal Humane Society's Parchment and a watch from the Carnegie Hero Trust Fund for saving a boy from drowning in the Annan and by a curious coincidence his brother, John Pendleton White, who served with the R.A.M.C. in Mesopotamia, also won the Royal Humane Society’s Parchment for also saving a boy from drowning the Annan in June 1908.


WHITE, W. B. GORD. HIGHRS.
William Blythe White – age 34 – Lance Sergeant (7669) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a reservist who previously had served for some years in India. He was working at the Provost Oat Mills in Annan when he was mobilised and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 13 August 1914, one of the first British formations to move to France as part of the original British Expeditionary Force and one of the first into action.
Born c.1880 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of the late David Blythe White and of the late Creilia (Brady) White. Husband of Annie (McEwen) White (from 1916 Mrs Robert Nelson) who he married in 1912 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 14 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial.

WHITTAKER, B. GREN. GDS.
Benjamin McCubbin Whitaker – age 22 – Private (27327) 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards.
Ben enlisted in Liverpool. He died in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station at Westvleteren near Poperinge.
Born 1895 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Son of John Ambler Whitaker and of Jane Neilson (McCubbin) Whitaker of Leicester Street, Birkenhead.
His mother Jane was born in 1859 in Annan and his sister Martha Whitaker lived at 2 Queensberry Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 5 September 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


WIGHTMAN, B. A. NEW ZEAL.
Belford Annan Wightman – age 30 – Private (45177) No. 2 Company, New Zealand Machine Gun Corps.
Belford had emigrated to New Zealand in 1908 and was a butcher at Ranfurly in the South Island when he enlisted there in November 1916. He sailed from Wellington in June 1917 and after training at the MG School at Grantham in Lincolnshire he was posted to his company in France in November 1917.
Born 1888 in Annan. Son of the late James Wightman and of Jane Elizabeth (Glass) Wightman of Silloth in Cumberland.
James had been born in Belford in Northumberland. He was a butcher and cattle dealer.
Missing in Action on 21 February 1918 and named on the Buttes New British Cemetery (N.Z.) Memorial, Polygon Wood, Belgium.
Also named on the Silloth War Memorial (but as an Australian)


WILSON, A. G. K.O.S.B.
Albert Goodrich Wilson – age 19 – Private (35240) 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Albert was a fitter at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in June 1918. He was in training in Fife when he contracted a fever and he was admitted to the East Fife Infectious Diseases Hospital in Dunfermline where he died.
Born 1898 in Annan. Son of the late Stewart and Jeanie or Jane (Caithness) Wilson of Wellington Street, Annan. Brother of Lawrence Wilson 30 Ednam Street, Annan.
Died on Service on 19 August 1918 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


WILSON, J. CANADA.
John Wilson – age 26 – Sergeant (24210) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was a gardener when he enlisted at Valcartier Camp in Quebec in September 1914. He had previously served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He had only recently spent leave with his parents in Annan and was killed few days after going back to France.
Born 1891 in Durideer, Dumfriesshire as John William Wilson. Son of John and Maggie (Dalziel) Wilson of 36 Butt Street and of 11 George Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1918 and buried in Hangard Wood British Cemetery, Somme, France.

WOODHOUSE, J. ROYAL NAVY.
James Woodhouse – age 35 – Leading Seaman (3300B) H.M.S. Stephen Furness, Royal Naval Reserve.
In 1901 James was a fisherman and as a reservist he was called up in August 1914. The "Stephen Furness" was requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as an as a squadron supply ship and later as an armed boarding steamer. The ship was en route from Lerwick to Liverpool for repairs when she was torpedoed and sunk west of the Isle of Man by the German submarine UB 64.
Born 1882 in Annan. Son of Richard and Mary (Foster) Woodhouse of 3 Gordon Terrace, Annan.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 13 December 1917 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


WOODHOUSE, E. R.D.C.
Edward Woodhouse – age 52 – Private (20054) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Edward was a fisherman who died of cancer at his home in Ednam Street, Annan.
I suspect that he was serving with a Supernumerary Company of the 2/5th KOSB which carried out guarding duties at key places including perhaps the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan. These companies were formed into the Royal Defence Corps in April 1916, after Edward had died.
Born 1861 in Annan as Edward Woodhouse Rae. Son of the late Thomas and Mary Ann (Rae) Woodhouse who married in 1872 in Annan. Husband of Isabella (Wylie) Woodhouse of 8 Ednam Street and of 4 Port Street, Annan who he married in 1886 in Annan.
Died on Service on 21 January 1916 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.

Served as Ronald Wylie – age 30 – Private (A22362) 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
The D&G Standard 11/11/1916 p.2 reported that
“Mrs Edward Woodhouse, 4 Port Street, Annan, has received official intimation that her oldest son. Private Thomas R. Wylie Woodhouse, No. A 22362, 8th Battalion Canadians, has been posted missing since 26th September. Private Woodhouse had been on active service in France since February, 1915. A younger brother, Private Wm. Wylie Woodhouse, of the Australian Forces, was wounded in France on 16th August
In 1901, aged 15, Thomas was a labourer in the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan and in 1907, as a fitter, he sailed from Liverpool for New Brunswick in Canada. He was living at 202 Carlton Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba when he enlisted in March 1915 and he sailed from Montreal in June.
Born 1886 in Annan as Thomas Woodhouse. Son of Edward and Isabella (Wyllie) Woodhouse of 8 Ednam Street and of 4 Port Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
William Wylie Woodhouse, Corporal (1641) AIF survived his wound and the war. He returned to Australia on 25 January 1919. He died in Tamworth, New South Wales on 9 August 1957.


WOODWARD, I. CANADA.
Insel Woodward – age 26 – Private (911486) 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Insel was educated at Annan Academy and at Skerry's College in Glasgow before he joined the Post Office in July 1909. In 1911 he was a clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank in London and was a boarder at 54 Sterndale Road in Hamersmith. He joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce in February 1912 and was at the branch in Vegreville, Alberta when he enlisted in Edmonton in May 1916. He served at Neuville, St. Vaast, Vimy Ridge, Lens and Amiens.
Born 1893 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Sephton) Woodward of 21 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Killed in Action on 10 August 1918 and buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial and on the CBC Roll of Honour.

WW2 NAMES.

ADAMSON, J. J. Royal Corps of Signals
.
John Johnstone Adamson – age 21 – Signalman (3191032) 80 Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery Signals Section, Royal Corps of Signals.
John had been employed at Mossband, Gretna and was a Territorial with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He joined the Signals and fought in Malaya but was made a prisoner of war with the surrender of Singapore in February 1942. He was transferred to the island of Formosa (Taiwan) and made to work in the copper mine at Kinkaseki. John died there but was re-interred in Hong Kong in July 1947.
Born 1921 in Brydekirk. Son of John Johnstone Adamson and Agnes Lithgow (McDowell) Adamson of Lady Street, Brydekirk.
Died on Service on 14 December 1942 and buried in Sai Wan War Cemetery, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial and on the Brydekirk Parish Church memorial.


ANDERSON, D. Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
Douglas Anderson – age 23 – Private (3189928) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
Douglas was educated at Annan Academy before serving his apprenticeship as an electrician in Annan. He then was employed as a welder at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan and was a Territorial with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was mobilised in September 1939 and served in France until evacuated from Cherbourg in May 1940. Later he transferred to the R.O.A.C.
Born 1920 in Annan. Son of Nicholas Scaife Anderson and step-son of David Jefferson of 2 Lochfield, Annan who married in 1922 in Annan. Husband of Florence (Pool) Anderson of 15 George Street, Annan who he married in 1940 in Annan.
Died on Active Service on 13 October 1944 and buried in Schoonselhof Cemetery, Antwerpen, Belgium.


BEATTIE, J. T. King's Own Scottish Borderers
.
James Thomson Beattie – age 27 – Corporal (3188698) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James served his apprenticeship as a draper in Annan before becoming an overseer at a works in Houghton, Carlisle. He was a member of Annan Town Band and served with the Territorials as a drummer in the Regimental band. He was killed in an accident near Banchory at Edinkillie, Moray.
Born 1915 in Annan. Son of Janet Green Beattie of 23 Newington Road, Annan.
Died on Service on 27 June 1943 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)

BELL, J. Royal Navy.
James Bell – age 27 – Leading Cook (P/MX 53027) H.M.S. Fidelity, Royal Navy.
The French merchant ship “Le Rhin” was taken over by Britain, converted to the special service vessel (SSV) HMS Fidelity (D 57) and commissioned on 24 Sep 1940. The ship was armed with four 4inch guns and four torpedo tubes, and was equipped with two seaplanes and a motor torpedo boat. She became detached from an outbound convoy while sailing for Colombo, Ceylon via Capetown with a cargo of two Landing Craft and 50 Royal Marine Commandos, and was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-435 in the mid-Atlantic.
Born 1917 in Annan. Son of Agnes Bell. Husband of Phyllis M. (George) Bell who he married in 1942 in Portsmouth.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 1 January 1943 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


BELL, R. G. Merchant Navy.
Ralph Grierson Bell – age 43 – Radio Officer, S.S. Magdapur (Liverpool) Merchant Navy.
A week after war was declared the cargo ship “Magdapur” was sailing from the Tyne to Southampton when, off the Suffolk coast, she hit a mine laid by the German submarine U-13. Many of the crew were rescued from the sea by the Aldeburgh lifeboat.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of Ralph and Elizabeth (Burnett) Bell. Husband of Elizabeth Cooper (Dobbie) Bell of Port Street, Annan and of Branton, Northumberland who he married in 1935 in Annan.
Killed by Enemy Action on 10 September 1939 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)


BROWN, W. S. Merchant Navy.
William Scott Brown – age 36 – Chief Steward, S.S. Pacific (Hull) Merchant Navy.
The “Pacific” had sailed from Sunderland with a cargo of coal for London. The convoy scattered in bad weather and she was reported missing by the next day.
Born 1906 in Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Jane Brown of 6 Silver Walk Annan.
Lost at Sea on 9 February 1943 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

BRYDSON, W. Royal Army Service Corps.
William Brydson – age 19 – Driver (T/3188593) 4th Reserve Motor Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
William was employed at Corsehill Quarries before he enlisted and was in the first contingent of the B.E.F. sent to France. He was buried in the St. Saens Hospital Grounds, south-east of Dieppe, but was re-interred in St. Valery-en-Caux in October 1947.
Born 1920 in Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Maxwell) Brydson of Northfield Cottage, Annan.
Killed in Action on 10 June 1940 and buried in St. Valery-en-Caux Franco-British Cemetery, Seine-Maritime, France.


BUTLER, C. E. Royal Air Force.
Charles Edward Butler – age 24 – Aircraftman 2nd Class (946898) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Charles, a member of the RAF Medical Corps, was a passenger on the “Nerissa” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-552 southeast of Rockall. She was sailing from St John's, Newfoundland to Liverpool and had 175 passengers, including Canadian servicemen along with RAF and Norwegian Army Air Service personnel, and general cargo, including aluminium, motor trucks and shells. She was the only transport carrying Canadian troops to be lost during World War II.
Born 1916 in Annan. Son of Edward John Butler and of Georgina (Bryson) Butler of 35 Port Street, Annan.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 30 April 1941 and named on the Ottawa Memorial, Ontario, Canada.


CAMPBELL, W. Royal Artillery.
William Campbell – age 27 – Lance Bombardier (1555627) 54 Battery, 19 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
William had served his apprenticeship as an ironmonger in Annan and afterwards was a traveller with a wholesale firm in Glasgow. He enlisted in March 1940 but on 3 May 1941 was found drowned in the Albert Dock of Aberdeen Harbour.
Born 1914 in Annan. Son of the late David Wilson Campbell and of Georgina (Thomson) Campbell of 23 Butts Street, Annan. Husband of Helen Annie Duthie of 6 Bengal Place, Glasgow and of 23 Butts Street, Annan who he married in 1937 in Glasgow.
Died on Service on 26 March 1941 and named at Aberdeen Crematorium.
His father, David Wilson Campbell, Private (S/10578) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders was killed in action on 19 July 1916.

CARROLL, J. J. Royal Artillery.
John Joseph Carroll – age 22 – Gunner (318003) 155 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
In March 1941, the 155th sailed from the River Clyde bound for India. However in August they were sent to Malaya and were continually in action until the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942.
Born 1919 in Annan. Son of Patrick and Elizabeth (Campbell) Carroll of 52 Waterfoot Road, Annan.
Missing in Action on 14 February 1942 and named on the Singapore Memorial, Singapore.


CROMBIE, J. Cameron Highlanders.
James Crombie – age 28 – Corporal (2927533) 2nd Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
James was a postman in Annan. He joined the 2nd Camerons in Egypt and took part in the battles against Italian forces in Eritrea. He was buried at Camp Wachai but was re-interred at Keren in January 1943.
Born 1912 in Annan. Son of Matthew Murray Crombie and of Mary Jane (Graham) Crombie of Carlisle Road, Annan. Husband of Agnes McGhee (Jamieson) Crombie of 3 Manse Crescent, Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1939 in Gretna.
Killed in Action on 14 February 1941 and buried in Keren War Cemetery, Eritrea.


CROMPTON, C. H. Merchant Navy.
Not listed by CWGC.
Charles Hugh Crompton – age 29 – 5th Engineer S.S. Eumaeus, Merchant Navy.
Charles was a director of the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he joined the Merchant Navy. He had been educated at St. Bees in Cumberland and served an engineering apprenticeship on the Tyne before he joined Cochranes in 1933 where his father was the Chairman. He became a director in May 1936. He joined the Blue Funnel Line and sailed to the Far East in December 1939, returning in April before sailing again for Sydney via South Africa. On the return journey he was badly burned in a boiler room explosion and died on the Hospital Ship “Oxfordshire” at Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Born 1910 in Annan. Son of the late Charles Edward Crompton and of Daisy (Anderson) Crompton.
Died on 3 September 1940 and buried in Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery, Sierra Leone.

CURRIE, H. Royal Marines.
Hugh Currie – age 22 – Marine (PLY/X 100023) H.M.S. Exeter, Royal Marines.
Hugh joined the cruiser "Exeter" in 1940. She was damaged in the main Java Sea battle, and sailing with two destroyers from Surabaya to escape through the Sunda Strait, she was attacked by a Japanese naval force. All three ships were lost.
Born 1920 in Annan. Son of the late Lucy Helen (Gavin) Currie and of Hugh Johnstone Currie and Annie Jane (Wylie) Currie of 13 Downie's Wynd, Annan.
Killed in Action/ Lost at Sea on 1 March 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


CUTHBERTSON, W. G. Royal Navy.
William Graham Cuthbertson – age 24 – Surgeon Lieutenant, H.M.S. Dainty, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
William was educated at Annan Academy and at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh before attending Edinburgh University. He graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in July 1939 before taking up posts at St. Luke's Hospital in Bradford. He was commissioned in April 1940 and served off Africa, Aden, India and in the Mediterranean. The destroyer “Dainty” had sailed on a patrol from Tobruk in Lybia but was attacked by a German Heinkel 111 aircraft whose bomb caused a magazine explosion. Survivors were taken off by HMS Hastie before the “Dainty” sank.
Born 1916 in Annan. Son of Robert Cuthbertson and of Olive Currie (Graham) Cuthbertson of Annan and of 14 Great Stuart Street, Edinburgh. Nephew of Captain William Cuthbertson M.C. KOSB of Beldcraig, Annan.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 February 1941 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Edinburgh University Roll of Honour and on the Old College War Memorial.


DALGLIESH, J. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John Dalgliesh – age 36 – Sergeant (309668) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had served in the army for over 18 years with the KOSB and with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was working at Eastriggs when as a reservist he was called up in September 1939. He was killed in an accident while on service in India.
Born 1908 in Annan. Son of William and Catherine (Taylor) Dalgliesh of 13 Queensberry Street, Annan. Husband of Ellen Forrester McL. (Wylie) Dalgliesh of 19 Bruce Street, Annan who he married in 1935 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Active Service on 16 October 1944 and buried in Kirkee War Cemetery, India.

DAVIE, R. Royal Artillery.
Robert (Robin) Davie – age 20 – Gunner (14350276) 112 (The West Somerset Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Robert was educated at Annan Academy before attending the De Bear School at Dumfries where he trained in shorthand and typing. He was employed in the Mansfield Estate office at Comlongon, Dumfriesshire before he enlisted in 1942 and had been at the front for about a month when he was fatally wounded.
Born 1924 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire. Son of Humphrey and Jean (Jamieson) Davie of Annandale Villa, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 18 September 1944 and buried in Leopoldsburg War Cemetery, Limburg, Belgium.


ELDER, A. D. H. Royal Navy.
Alasdair Donald Hay Elder – age 20 – Sub-Lieutenant (A) 846 Squadron Fleet Air Arm, H.M.S. Trumpeter, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
On 1 May 1945 the Escort Carrier “Trumpeter” deployed with the Escort Carriers “Searcher” and “Queen” as part of a Home Fleet Task Force to carry out an attack on U-Boat facilities at Kilbotn in Norway. Alasdair was on an Avenger torpedo bomber which was hit by anti-aircraft fire and had to make a forced landing during which the crew of three were killed.
Born 1925 in Annan. Son of William Elder, M.D., D.P.H., and Margaret Elder of Annan.
Killed in Action on 4 May 1945 and buried in Sorvik Churchyard, Norway.


ELLIOTT, W. S. Royal Artillery.

FAIRBAIRN, B. R. Seaforth Highlanders.
Benjamin Richard Fairbairn – age 19 – Private (14403361) 6th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
The family had returned to Annan from Lanarkshire in 1940 and Benjamin had volunteered in October 1942. He served in the Annan Home Guard before he was called up.
Born 1924 in Crawford, Lanarkshire. Son of Hope Fairbairn and Agnes (Graham) Fairbairn of 26 Thomas Street, Annan who had married in Annan in 1911.
Killed in Action on 18 January 1944 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.

FLEMING, W. Royal Air Force.
William Fleming – age 27 – Sergeant/Pilot (1284768) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
William served his apprenticeship in the Royal Bank of Scotland in Ecclefechan and was promoted to the head office of the bank in London. He was engaged there for four years, and he joined the R.A.F. in August 1940. After four months of training in Canada as a pilot he returned home in August 1941 and he would have completed his training on the week he died. He was killed in a flying accident when his Whitley bomber from 19 Operational Training Unit at RAF Forres crashed at Tarlogie near Tain in Ross and Cromarty.
Born 1914 in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Agnes Strang (Mather) Fleming of Cove Villa, Annan.
Died on Service on 9 October 1941 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named in the RBS Book of Remembrance.


FLOCKHART, J. S. C. Royal Air Force.
John Spiring Flockhart – age 28 – Flight Sergeant/Air Gunner (755152) 149 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Jack had been employed at the Blue Bell hotel in Lockerbie before he joined the truck manufacturer Foden Ltd. at Sandbach in Cheshire. He joined the RAF in April 1939, trained as an Air Gunner and flew in several raids on Germany before moving to Libya in November 1940. He returned to the UK and his Stirling bomber had taken off from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk for a raid on Essen when it crashed at Wanheimerort. Jack was buried in Dusseldorf North Cemetery but was re-interred in Reichswald in December 1946.
Born 1914 in Alva, Clackmannanshire. Son of David Hunter Flockhart and Georgina (Spiring) Flockhart of Crossleigh, Annandale Avenue, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Margaret Farish (McGauchie) Flockhart of Annan who he married in 1939 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 6 June 1942 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial in Lockerbie and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


FOX, R. Royal Artillery.
Robert Fox – age 30 – Gunner (1580297) 507 Battery, 80 Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Robert had joined the army in 1940 and was killed in a road accident near Kidderminster, Worcestershire.
Born 1912 in Kirkcudbright. Son of Charles and Marion (McLean) Fox. Husband of Isabella (Carruthers) Fox of Lady Street, Annan who he married in 1937 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Active Service on 10 August 1943 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)

Archibald was educated at Hoddom School and was working at Mossband, Longtown when he enlisted in 1940.
Born 1913 in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire. Son of Duncan and Helen (Mason) Gillies. Husband of Helen Dickson (Rogerson) Gillies of 3 Chalmers Court, High Street, Annan, who he married in 1941 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 16 June 1944 and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.

GRIERSON, A. S. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam Smith Grierson – age 24 – Lance Corporal (3190431) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Adam was employed at Dornock Mains when he enlisted. The 2nd KOSB sailed with the 7th (Indian) Division to Burma in September 1943. They crossed into Burmese coastal province of Arakan and took part in the critical actions in February 1944. In early 1945 they marched towards the Irrawaddy and took part in the assault that led to the capture of Mandalay. Adam was buried in the War Cemetery at Meiktila but was re-interred in 1951.
Born 1921 in Annan. Son of John and Margaret Ann (Smith) Grierson of 7 English Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 30 April 1945 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar. [Burma]

William was employed at Robinson & Sons in Annan when he enlisted. In March 1941, the 155th sailed from the River Clyde bound for India. However in August they were sent to Malaya and were continually in action until the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942. William died while working on the Burma – Thailand railway and was buried at Wat Koke Mor, Nong-Pladuk in Thailand but was re-interred at Chungkai in April 1946.
Born 1915 in Annan. Son of John and Margaret Ann (Smith) Grierson of 7 English Street, Annan.
Died on Service on 1 February 1944 and buried in Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand.

GRIERSON, R. J. Royal Inn Fus.
Robert James Grierson – age 27 – Fusilier (3134161) 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Robert was a painter when he married in 1940. In late 1942 the 1st RIF, as part of the 14th Indian Division, began an advance in the Burmese coastal province of Arakan, intending ultimately to recapture Akyab Island, vital for its airfields. In February 1943 attacks on the Japanese positions failed with heavy losses.
Born 1915 in Poole, Dorset. Son of Robert (a forester) and Margaret (Nairn) Grierson of Warmanbie Cottage, Annan. Husband of Jamesina (Dickson) Grierson of Springfield, Gretna who he married in 1940 in Gretna.
Missing in Action on 18 February 1943 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar. [Burma]


HALBERT, T. R. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas Ronald Halbert – age 21 – Private (3190557) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas had been brought up with his grandmother, Mrs Halbert, at North Street, Brydekirk and went to school there. He was a mason, firstly at Corsehill Quarries and then with a local builder. He joined the KOSB before the war. Thomas was on his way home on leave when he was taken ill at Crewe Station. He died in the military hospital in Chester.
Born 1919 in Annan. Son of Adam Creighton Halbert and Marion (Bell) Halbert of Thorburn Crescent, Annan.
Died on Service on 22 January 1941 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Brydekirk Parish War Memorial and on the Brydekirk Parish Church memorial.


HOLLIDAY, W. T. Royal Air Force.
William Holliday – age 29 – Corporal (992991) 1602 Flight, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William worked at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan until he was called up in early 1940. Based at RAF Cleave at Bude in Cornwall, 1602 Flight's main role was target towing duties for the training of anti-aircraft batteries. William's Hawker Henley crashed into the sea.
Born 1913 in Wigton, Cumberland as William T. Holiday. Son of John Tordiff Holliday and of Mary Hurst (Dodd) Holliday of Northfield Farm, Annan.
Brother of Joseph Dodd Holliday of Rosedale, Annan who married in 1935 in Annan.
Died on Active Service on 9 August 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

IRVING, J. Royal Scots.
John Irving – age 32 – Lance Corporal (3063839) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a baker's vanman in Annan when he enlisted in February 1940. The battalion landed at Normandy on 16 June 1944 and went into action ten days later during Operation Epsom.
Born 1911 in Annan. Son of James and Catherine Irving. Husband of Myrtle Evelyn (Bains or Scott) Irving of 10 St. John's Road, Annan and of Chelmsford, Essex who he married in 1943 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 29 June 1944 and buried in Tilly-Sur-Seulles War Cemetery, Calvados, France.


IRVING, W. J. T. Royal Artillery.
William John Thomson Irving – age 24 – Second Lieutenant (89371) 76 (Highland) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
William was educated at Annan and Dumfries Academies before serving his apprenticeship as a solicitor in Annan. He qualified as a law agent at Edinburgh University and he gained a position with solicitors in Arbroath, Angus. He was commissioned in the local Territorial artillery unit in June 1939 and was mobilised with them, landing at Le Havre in January 1940. They were transferred from the 51st (Highland) Division to the 3rd Division in March 1940.
Born 1915 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late George Irving and of and Elizabeth (Scott) Irving of Tulliesfield and of Albie Croft, Annan.
(George died on 7 June 1940 aged 81, just three days before his son)
Killed in Action on 10 June 1940 and buried in Hornoy Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dornock Parish War Memorial, on the Dornock Parish Church memorial and on the Arbroath War Memorial and Roll of Honour.


JOHNTONE, S. A. Seaforth Highlanders.
Samuel Anderson Johnstone – age 26 – Private (3194345) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Samuel had served his apprenticeship as a painter in Annan and was involved with the Life Boys and Boys Brigade in the town.
Born 1916 in Annan. Son of Mary Elizabeth Johnstone. Grandson of Jessie Douglas Johnstone of Lady Street, Annan.
Missing in Action between 24 and 25 October 1942 and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
