Stuart - Could you advise us of how to go about becoming volunteers please?

Obviously we've lost some members since the forum began and we may lose some of the photos they originally posted, but as this looks to be a good way forward (and a good way of not pulling my hair out!!) we'd need to know how we go about things with IWM.

Thanks,
Anne Smile

Anne,

The easiest, and recommended, way is to send an e-mail to memorials@iwm.org.uk.

One of the project managers-Ian Hook or Catherine Long should then contact you.

I know this email address is monitored and actioned daily, but if there are any problems I will give you their direct email addresses.

Stuart

I emailed the other day and got an automated reply, but I expect I'll be contacted shortly.

I e-mailed this to Anne and a couple of other members earlier today but I should have read this thread first as it looks like a lot of my questions and concerns have already been answered by Stuart. I will leave it as it is though to show my thinking.

Thanks

Adam

I was wanting to have a good look around the IWM site before commenting. I also think it is definitely the best solution to the problems we have and I agree with some of the concerns others have also raised.

1. This solution at present doesn’t seem to replace the war graves project but the existing entries for plaques to individual soldiers on the WMR would suggest it would allow us to load them to their entries as individual memorials and hopefully it will then allow a search by cemetery as a location? If IWM object to CWGC headstones being added as that is already covered by another project then I think we have an argument for saying we should at least include inscriptions on private headstones – this is something we covered ourselves at length!

2. How many photographs will IWM upload? - Looks like as many as are supplied – see https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/6023 .

3. How do we go about uploading the data? I don’t think we can upload them ourselves. It looks like everything has to go to an IWM e-mail address – or have I missed something? In which case discussions may look at IWM taking the huge amount of data straight from our site(s) and then we send photos on separately? Something which can be thrashed out once IWM respond.

4. Many of our members have identified names on more than one memorial. From what I can see the IWM do not link them – see entries 71576 and 44292 for James Mckenzie VC. I don’t know if this is because IWM haven’t made the link – or don’t want to in case of a mistake - or because the functionality of the database can’t make the link. They have even managed to get two database entries for E. Sykes for the same memorial https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/61367.

I don’t want to be critical of IWM though because they may rely on volunteers for populating it. This will probably be a key point of discussion with them as we have so much information and they may not have limited resources to deal with it. An entry for individuals also adds this comment “This record comprises all the information held by IWM’s War Memorials Register on this memorial name. The Register records information as stated on the memorial.” So they aren’t looking for more information on an individual other than a name and then they point back to the memorial inscription. For more information they point to the Lives of the First World War database but not a direct link to a specific entry. This is obviously of no use for pre-1914 and post-1919 names either. It is maybe worth mentioning to IWM during discussions in case they are looking about a change to the way they record this information in the future?

However I don’t want to appear negative about this as we obviously can bring a huge amount of information to the IWM and also update and correct information they already have. They have already listed many of the memorials we have recorded because they have found references to them in books and because of information the RBL provided to them in the 1990s. But many are still without the detailed information we have collated. This is definitely a win-win for both parties. And if I recall we based our template for recording memorial locations on the old UKNIWM so any new entries should hopefully have the information IWM needs. They also seem to be basing their areas on the old regions which is roughly what we used to a certain extend too.

I also think the point about keeping the forum going but pointing to the IWM WMR for the photos is a great idea and lets us move back to our discussion forum roots which takes us back to David’s point about changing the focus of the SMRG to helping individuals and groups. It also means that the information on the individuals we have collated can still be kept until we work out with IWM the best way to record this data we have.

Thanks for this,

Regarding the double name on 61367 this was an error I picked up a long time ago and disposed of the 2nd entry. There is a current technical error in that the public site is displaying 'disposed' names. I have referred this to the developers this morning to devise a solution.

Regarding the James McKenzie VC links between 44292 and 71576, I have added the links on both records this morning. Thanks for pointing this out. They can be added manually, where known. I actually edited both records but several months apart, and just didn't notice.
At huge risk of becoming over-burdened please PM me if similar issues are noticed, as that kind of matter can be easily amended.
You can do a name search for James McKenzie VC which would show all the memorials he is one, where the names have been input.
I am currently working my way through Ross and Cromarty upgrading WMR records using the local R & C HS website.
For instance last night I totally amended the entry for Garve, to reflect the fact that this memorial covers a huge area apart from Garve, and also has a VC commemorated on it.

IWM do not list CWGC memorials, including CWGC gravestones, but do record private inscriptions, unless the person is buried in that grave, as that is, de facto, a CWGC grave. If a private inscription refers to someone buried there AND someone buried elsewhere we only record the person buried elsewhere, but under comments state that the 2nd person is buried at that location.
In Dumfries and Galloway this policy of not recording gravestones at actual place of burial caused a number of problems regarding Covenanters. But the case for exceptions could not be made.

Thank you Stuart for the detailed update. I'll have another look at the database now you've passed on some more information.

And thanks for the confirmation about the grave markers.

Kind regards

Adam

I try to delete the Photobucket info so we don't have all the mess at the start of an entry. It looks so messy so meantime can others maybe do the same.

Me too Anne and I've just noticed that the size of the (ratbag) bucket signage has been markedly increased, presumable as a not too subtle reminder to send them shedloads of money (dream-on!)

I have relatively few non-photos (compared to say Spoons) so it is easier for me, but can I encourage you to delete these logos where and when you can.

I notice that in the last few weeks a number of posts have lost their Photobucket images- with a comment-"Sorry, This image is currently Unavailable'.

This has even happened with some of 'Spoons' (Paul Goodwin's) posts and he has paid his shekels to Photobucket.
One instance of this is Canongate Boys Club, Edinburgh but a significant number of others have come to light as well

I've noticed that as well Stuart.
Thank goodness for the images on the IWM site.
I'd be lost without the work of you and your colleagues.
Happy New Year!

Photobucket crashed on 23 Dec and they have still not managed to get it back up. Bloody poor service that I am paying for!

Photobucket sending out emails saying all accounts which don't pay will now be "Deactivated".

Looks like images will go offline (not just blurred/watermarked).
