Anne - he is not listed on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen nor on the Roll of Service.
The Southern Reporter has
DEATH OF Lieut. J. W. ROSS.--Widespread sympathy has been caused in Selkirk by the intelligence received last Thursday of the death through a flying accident of Lieut. James Wilson Ross. - Squadron Royal Flying Corps. Mr Ross, who was well known in Selkirk, was married at John's Church last- Christmas to Miss Ella Hartley, eldest daughter the late Mr Richard Hartley, formerlv organist of the church. The deceased officer enlisted the Royal Scots at the beginning of the war and on obtaining a commission was transferred the Seaforth Highlanders, with whom he saw much fighting in France. He then entered the Roval Flying Corps as an Observer. and after six months' service returned home to qualifv as a pilot. Mr Ross was stationed in Lincolnshire, and is understood that when the accident occurred he was practising night-flying. According the evidence given at the inquest on Saturday, another officer. Second- Lieut. Browne, of Pendleton. Manchester, was fatally injured at the same time. Mr Ross was dead when picked up and Mr Browne died in hospital. It was stated that the engine of the aeroplane found to be intact. No particulars are published as to the cause of the accident. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Mrs Ross. who resides with her mother. Mrs Hartley, at Glebe Know, has been the recipient of many sincere expressions of condolence in her sad bereavement.
The report in the Jedburgh Gazette is much shorter but mentions that he was from Torry, Aberdeenshire. _________________ Ken |

From 'Airmen died in the Great War 1914 - 1918'
Lt J W Ross, 33 Sqn, Kwf (killed while flying) in Fe2b (aircraft type) B1900 (serial no) with 2Lt J S Browne who died 29.3.18 UK
Definitely Royal Flying Corps as the RAF was not formed until 1 Apr 1918
