Served as Anthony Barrett.
Anthony Barrett Atkins – age 31 – Private (18627) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Anthony enlisted in August 1914 and joined the 7th KOSB in France in October 1915.
Born 1886 in Annan as Anthony Barrett Atkins. Son of William and Agnes (Barrett) Atkins of 7 George Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 16 August 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Thomas Atkins – age 25 – Private (12507) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was living at 2 Marquis Place in Burnley, Lancashire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months later during the battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Annan as Thomas William Atkins. Son of William and Agnes (Barrett) Atkins of Lady Street and of 7 George Street, Annan. Husband of Sadie Ann (Fitzgerald) Atkins (Mrs. William Jeffery from 1919) of 18 Duckworth Street, Newbridge, Barrowford, Lancashire who he married in 1913 in Burnley, Lancashire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Robert Atkinson – age 23 – Private (S/3738) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Catherine Atkinson of 6 Swans Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

BEATTIE, F. W. K.O.S.B.
Francis (Frank) William Beattie – age 41 – Private (18337) "A" Company, 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank was employed at Newbie Fisheries when he enlisted. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915. The battalion moved from Egypt to France in April 1916 and he was wounded there. He returned to France only to be fatally wounded.
Born 1877 at Riddingdyke, Cummertrees as Francis William Beattie. Son of James and Elizabeth Marion (Nicholson) Beattie. Husband of Elizabeth (Shennan) Beattie of Newbie Barns, Annan who he married in 1898 in Annan.
Died of Wounds on 30 April 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Cummertrees Parish War Memorial as William Beattie.

BELL, J. M. R. SCOTS.
Joseph Mitchell Bell – age 18 – Private (51553) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Joseph was a fitter at the gasworks in Annan when he enlisted as Private (47855) in the 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers in April 1917. He was mobilised in August and posted to the 12th Royal Scots in France on 1 April 1918 but he was killed less than two weeks later.
Born 1899 in Annan. Son of the late William Bell and of Jane (Mitchell) Bell of 21 Murray Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial.

BLACK, J. A. H. K.O.S.B.
Joseph Alexander Hamilton Black – age 30 – Corporal (2141) 2/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph had been a boiler maker at the Cochrane & Company factory at Newbie, Annan and a well known local footballer with the Solway Star club. He served with the 2/5th KOSB and was engaged on munitions work when he died of Bright's disease at his home.
Born 1884 in Kingston, Gorbals, Glasgow as Joseph James Hamilton Black.
Son of the the late William and Mary (Hamilton) Black. Husband of Annie Robertson (Lynn) Black of Downie's Wynd Annan who he married in 1908 in Annan.
Died on Service on 1 March 1916 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Cochrane company Roll of Honour.


BLAND, J. R. HIGHRS.
John Bland – age 19 – Private (202151) 4th/5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
John was a farm servant at Croftheads when he enlisted in Carlisle as Private (2628) in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1914. He was posted as Private (6245) to the 4th/5th Black Watch in August 1916.
Born 1897 in Annan as John Schofield Bland. Son of James and Mary (Lupton) Bland of 5 Back Lady Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


BOWMAN, J. W. H.L.I.
Joseph William Bowman – age 27 – Private (15835) 17th Battalion (3rd Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Joseph served his apprenticeship as a draper in Annan before taking a position in Glasgow. He enlisted there and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1889 in Annan. Son of John and Annie (Martin) of Queensberry Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

James Burton, Military Medal – age 20 – Private (28509) 1st Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)
James was working at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted as Private (M/317871) in the Army Service Corps. He was posted to the 8th Royal West Kents but was transferred to the 1st Battalion where he was awarded a MM as 28509 Pte. Burton, J., 1st Bn. (Newbie)
Born 1898 in Newbie, Annan as James Burton Rae. Son of Joseph Elliot Burton and of Mary Jane (Rae) Burton of 8 Three Trees Road, Newbie and of 1 Hope Place, Terregles Street, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire who married in 1898 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1918 and buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


CALDWELL, J. Y. M.G.C.
James Yuille Caldwell – age 20 – Private (141621) 14th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
James was educated at Annan Academy and was employed in the Commercial Bank of Scotland in Annan when he enlisted as Private (3330) in the Royal Fusiliers in June 1916. He was posted to France as Private (34479) in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in November 1916 and later transferred to the MGC. James was buried by the Germans in the Military Cemetery at La Broque in Alsace but was re-interred in Plaine in 1921.
Born 1897 in Annan. Son of Robert and Agnes (Yuille) Caldwell of High Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 27 June 1918 and buried in Plaine French National Cemetery, Bas-Rhin (Alsace) France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial and on the Commercial Bank of Scotland memorial in the RBS branch in St. Andrew's Square, Edinburgh.

Lawrence was educated at Annan Academy. He was severely wounded and died in hospital in Rouen.
Born 1886 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire as Lawrence Alexander Caldwell. Son of Robert and Agnes (Yuille) Caldwell of High Street, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 31 January 1917 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

CALVERT, H. W. CANADA.
William Herbert Calvert – age 24 – Private (477139) Royal Canadian Regiment.
In 1911 William, aged 18, was an apprentice chemist and shop assistant in Annan and was living with his grandmother, Mary Calvert, and his aunt Mary Irving Calvert at 2 Park Terrace. His father Adam had been born in Annan but had emigrated to the USA where he married and raised a family. They sailed from New York and arrived in Glasgow in January 1900 and by 1901 they had settled in Murton in County Durham where Adam was a chemist and sub postmaster.
William enlisted as Private (20151) in the RCR in Toronto in October 1914 and he re-enlisted for overseas service in Halifax, Nova Scotia in August 1915 when he joined the Regiment after they had returned from Bermuda. The Regiment arrived in France in November 1915.

Son of Adam Richard Calvert and of Cora Amelia (Prior) Calvert of 11 Side Cliff Road, Roker, Sunderland, Co. Durham.

Also named on the St. Andrew's Church Roll of Honour in Roker.


CAMPBELL, D. W. GORD. HIGHRS.
David Wilson Campbell – age 32 – Private (S/10578) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
David was a native of Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire and worked as a cycle and motor mechanic. He enlisted in June 1916 and had been in France for five weeks when he was killed by a grenade.
Born 1888 in Newton Stewart, Penninghame. Son of William and Mary (Harvey) Campbell. Husband of Georgina (Thomson) Campbell of 23 Butts Street, Annan who he married in 1914 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial.


CARRUTHERS, J. K.O.S.B.
James Carruthers – age 28 – Sergeant (40145) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a member of the Territorials and served with the 2/5th Battalion, KOSB until he was posted to France in early 1916.
Born 1888 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William John Carruthers and Catherine (Holt) Carruthers of Swordwell Cottage, Annan.
He named his sister Jeannie as his legatee
.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial.

CARRUTHERS, R. E. S. K.O.S.B.
Richard Ernest Scott Carruthers – age 21 – Private (1456) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was an apprentice boilermaker at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan. As a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. Robert contracted enteric fever and died in hospital on Mudros.
Born 1894 in Gosforth, Castle Ward, Northumberland. Son of George and Elizabeth (Scott) Carruthers who had married in 1888 in Dornock.
In 1891 they were at Monkseaton in Northumberland but by 1901 they were at Hay's Place in Annan.
Died on Active Service on 4 August 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.

Christopher George Carruthers – age 27 – Sergeant (135445) 4th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Christopher was a street car conductor when he enlisted in Toronto in July 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916 and joined his battalion in France in September. He was promoted to Sergeant in December 1916. Christopher was killed at Vimy Ridge and was buried there. He was re-interred at La Chaudiere in August 1919.
Born 1890 in Whitley, Tynemouth, Northumberland. Son of George and Elizabeth (Scott) Carruthers who had married in 1888 in Dornock.
Husband of Nellie (Waltham) Carruthers of 235 Poplar Plains Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada who he married in 1913 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in La Chaudiere Military Cemetery, Vimy, France.


CAVINEY, M. ROYAL NAVY.
Martin Caviney – age 26 – Stoker 1st Class (K/13925) H.M.S. Ranger, Royal Navy
Martin was a labourer when he joined the navy, signing on for 12 years in February 1912. He was serving on the battleship “Superb” at the beginning of the war and later on the “Royal Sovereign” before he joined the salvage vessel “Ranger” in July 1918, based at HMS Idaho the Auxiliary Patrol base at Milford Haven in Wales. He died of pneumonia and influenza at home while on leave.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Martha Caviney of 17 Greencroft Wynd, Annan.
Died on Service on 16 March 1919 and buried in Annan Cemetery. (CWG)


CLARK, R. K.O.S.B.
Robert Clark – age 31 – Private (242368) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1888 in Duns, Berwickshire. Son of Robert Mossman Clark and of Alice (Sherlow) Clark of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland. Husband of Margaret Blacklock (Irving) Clark of 14 Port Street, Annan who he married in 1912 in Annan.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.

COLLINS, J. ROYAL NAVY.
John Collins – age 22 – Able Seaman (Clyde Z/5305) Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
John had been an apprentice boiler-maker at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915. After service in Egypt the battalion move to France in May 1916 but John contracted a fever (pyrexia) and was evacuated home in November 1916. He rejoined his battalion in France in May 1917 but was fatally wounded and died two days later in the 46th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of Martin and Margaret (Smith) Collins of Northfield Lodge and of Blackhills, Annan.
Died of Wounds on 28 October 1917 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


CONNOR, T. BORD. REG.
Thomas Connor – age 24 – Private (11763) 7th (Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry) Battalion, Border Regiment.
Thomas was employed at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted. He joined the 6th Borderers at Gallipoli in August 1915. He then spent a period with the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion in the UK before he joined the 7th Battalion in France.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Martin and Mary Ann (Whitlaw) Connor of 15 Scott's Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 September 1918 and buried in Gauche Wood Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


CORMIE, M. K.O.S.B.
Matthew Cormie – age 19 – Private (1883) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Matt was an apprentice engineer at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed at the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Annan. Son of William and Marion (Lockhart) Cormie of 3 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

CRONE, P. R. HIGHRS.
Peter Crone – age 36 – Private (266744) 1/7th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Peter served his apprenticeship as a grocer in Annan. He enlisted at Perth as Private (4394) in the 1/6th Black Watch in 1916.
Born 1881 in Annan as Peter Cron. Son of the late Robina (Bell) Cron and of William Cron of Annan.
Killed in Action on 20 November 1917 and buried in Ribecourt Road Cemetery, Trescault, France.


CROPP, T. B. YORK & LANCS.
Served as Thomas Burns.
Thomas Burns Cropp – age 27 – Sergeant (34500) 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
Thomas was serving as Private and Sergeant (10599) with the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers at Lucknow in India in August 1914. The battalion returned to England in December 1914 and landed at Cape Helles on Gallipoli in April 1915. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta with appendicitis in October. He then served with the 6th KOSB in France before he transferred to the 9th Y&L Regiment.
Born 1890 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Son of the late Henry and Margaret (Curran) Burns. Foster son of George and Williamina or Minnie Cropp of 25 Murray Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 28 May 1917 and buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) Belgium.


DALGLIESH, J. K.O.S.B.
James Buchanan Dalgliesh – age 36 – Lance Corporal (6878) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a tailor when he enlisted in the KOSB in December 1899. He served in South Africa from April 1900 to March 1902, then in India until November 1903, then in Burma until December 1905, then in Aden until December 1906. He returned to the UK with the 2nd KOSB before joining the 1st KOSB in India in December 1911. In August 1914 the battalion was in Lucknow, India. They returned to the UK via Egypt and then sailed for Gallipoli, landing at Cape Helles in April 1915. James was wounded twice during May before being killed in June.
Born 1879 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. Son of late William Dalgliesh and of Margaret (Cowan) Dalgliesh of 12 Ednam Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 6 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial as J. B. Dalgliesh.

DAVIDSON, J. BORD. REG.
Thought to be:
Joseph Davidson – age 26 – Private (19416) 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.
Joseph was a farm labourer when he enlisted at Carlisle in January 1915. He was posted to the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in July 1915 but was wounded in August and evacuated back to the UK. He was posted to France in March 1916 and joined the 2nd Battalion on 28 April but was killed at the Somme less than three months later.
Born 1890 at Wetheral, Carlisle, Cumberland as Joseph Stephenson Davidson. Son of Walter and Mary (Millburn) Davidson of Bellingham, Northumberland. Husband of Janet (Hall) Davidson of Burnfoot-on-Esk, Longtown and of Langshaw Cottage, Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1914 in Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Peter Ferguson Dixon – age 21 – Private (S/32691) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Peter was brought up in Annan and worked in the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan.
Born 1897 in Carlisle, Cumberland. Son of Andrew and Nicholas (Ferguson) Dixon of 19 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan.
Killed in Action on 4 November 1918 and buried in Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois, France.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


DOUGLAS, A. R.A.M.C.
Archibald Douglas – age 25 – Private (30508) 8th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps.
Archibald was educated at Annan Academy and served his apprenticeship in the offices at Provost Mills in Annan before he emigrated to Australia. He returned and worked for a potato merchant in Annan, in Newcastle and in the Midlands before he enlisted in August 1914. He joined the 63rd Field Ambulance, arrived in Rouen in June 1915 and then joined the 8th FA.
Born 1892 in Annan. Son of Bailie Ebenezer Douglas and Elizabeth Hobkirk (Hammond) Douglas of 2 Church Street, Annan.
Killed in Action on 3 May 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Also named on the Annan Academy memorial.

Born 1891 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Jane (McGee) Douglas [formerly Mrs John Black] and of James Douglas of Ivy Bank, 12 Mill Road, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire. James senior was serving as Private (13756) 32nd Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps in Leith. James junior was brought up by his half brother Walter Black of 12 Croft Road, Hawick.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Ste. Catherine British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour and on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial in Dumfries.


DOUGLAS, R. R.S.F.
Robert Douglas – age 31 – Private (8372) 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.
Robert was a labourer when he enlisted in the 2nd Border Regiment in June 1906. He served in Gibraltar, India and Burma before he was transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1913. He was working at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan when he was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge on 5 October 1914 but was killed three weeks later.
Born 1883 in Annan. Son of the late John and Ellen (Aitken) Douglas. Brother of Alexander Dougls of Pathhead, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Durham and of Annie Stevenson of 11 St. Patrick's Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire who he named as his legatee.
Missing in Action on 26 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.

William Douglas – age 36 – Private (18590) Royal Scots Fusiliers, transferred as Private (107) to the 1st Company. Labour Corps.
Born 1882 in Annan. Son of William and Annie Douglas of Annan. He named his sister Mrs. Annie (Douglas) Gilbertson, wife of Arthur, as Guardian but did not specify the reason. Annie and Arthur married in 1913 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 23 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France

DOUGLAS, W. J. R.S.F.
William John Douglas – age 22 – Private (12047) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William worked at the Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted. He landed with the 6th Battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He was wounded at the Somme in June 1916 and returned to France in April 1917 but was killed four months later.
Born 1894 in Annan as William John Irving Douglas. Son of the late John Douglas and of Mary Brown (Irving) Douglas (Mrs. John Lee Smith from 1906) of Annan. Husband of Mary (McQuade) Douglas of Coffee Close, Dumfries and of 164 High Street, Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 1 August 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


DUNCAN, J. H. CAMERON H.
James Hume Duncan – age 27 – Private (S/18498) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a farm servant when he enlisted in Carlisle in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June 1916.
Born 1890 in Dalton, Dumfrieshire as John Hume. Son of Arthur William Duncan and Isabella Callum (Hume) Duncan of 12 Three Trees Road, Newbie, Annan who had married in 1890 in Durisdeer, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action between 23 and 27 April 1917 and buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial.

EDGAR, G. CANADA.
George Edgar – age 28 – Private (132382) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
George emigrated to Canada in 1907 and was a clerk when he enlisted in Montreal, Ontario in September 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in March 1916 and joined his battalion in France on 29 June 1916. Two months later he was reported missing and presumed dead but his body was recovered from a battlefield grave and re-interred in February 1923.
Born 1888 in Annan. Son of James and Grace Harriet (McLean) Edgar of 117 Dalry Road, Edinburgh.
The family had moved from Scott Street, Annan to Edinburgh by 1901.
Killed in Action on 4 September 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.1, Serre-les-Puisieux, France.


FARISH, R, ROYAL NAVY.
Robert Farish – age 22 – Stoker 1st. Class (SS/113014) HMS Indefatigable, Royal Navy.
Robert was a railway porter when he joined the navy in November 1912. He joined the battlecruiser “Indefatigable” in June 1913 but she was sunk during the Battle of Jutland when shells from the German battlecruiser “Von der Tann” caused an explosion ripping a hole in her hull. Only three of the crew survived.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Jane Farish of 1 Gavins Court, Downie's Wynd, Annan. Grandson of James Farish of Downie's Wynd, Annan.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


GILBERTSON, J. A. K.O.S.B.
John Alexander Gilbertson – age 22 – Corporal (240168) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a joiner at Millside Bridge in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire and as Private (1217) was a member of the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He contracted jaundice in November but recovered to served in Egypt and Palestine where he was reported missing at Gaza. John's body was found and buried in Gaza.
Born 1894 in Annan. Son of Thomas and Maggie Roddick (Campbell) Gilbertson of 3 Downies Wynd, Annan.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.

GILBERTSON, RALPH K.O.S.B.
Ralph Albert Ritchie Gilbertson – age 23 – Private (14506) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Ralph was a Private with the Border Regiment in Carlisle. He was a gamekeeper at Robgill Tower, Kirtlebridge, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1893 in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Son of Richard and Marion (Rae) Gilbertson of Porter's Lodge, Newington Road, Annan (in 1891) of Stapleton Kennels, Dornock (in 1901) of Burthwaite, near Carlisle (in 1911) and of Merkland, Kirtlebridge, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Richard, a gamekeeper, was born in Annan.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish War Memorial.


GILBERTSON, ROBT. K.O.S.B.
Robert Gilbertson – age 23 – Private (6902) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a labourer when he enlisted in August 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in March 1915 but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and evacuated to hospital in the UK in March 1916. He was posted for “Home Service” as Private (37085) in the Royal Scots in September but returned to France to the 6th KOSB in January 1917 only to be evacuated again in August. He was treated for a diseased leg bone at the Military Hospital at Whalley in Lancashire until July 1918 when he was moved to the Stobhill Military Hospital in Glasgow from where he was discharged from the army on 20 May 1919 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (B274202). Robert died five days later at home in Annan.
Born 1896 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert and Jemima (Findlay) Gilbertsonof Newbie Mains and of Bellsprings, Annan.
Died on 23 May 1919 and buried in Lochmaben Cemetery, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)

GRAHAM, B. R.A.
Benjamin Graham – age 25 – Gunner (125968) 131st Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Benjamin was working at the Cochrane & Company factory at Newbie, Annan when he enlisted.
Born 1891 in Annan. Son of Joseph and Mary (Bell) Graham of Newbie Cottages, Cummertrees, Annan.
Killed in Action on 14 June 1917 and buried in La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, France.
Also named on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.


GRAHAM, C. R.A.M.C.
Thought to be:
Crawford Bell Lucas Graham – age 21 – Private (19826) 52nd Division Cyclist Company, Army Cyclist Corps.
Crawford had previously been a Territorial with the 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers as Private (334). He was working in the Post Office in Annan when he enlisted as Private (2945) in the 2/5th KOSB in January 1915. He was posted to the 1/5th KOSB in Egypt in February 1916 and was transferred to the Cyclist Company in April. Crawford was posted as missing after the battle at Gaza in April 1917 but his body was later recovered.
Born 1896 in Annan. Son of the late William Graham and of Margaret Ellen or Helen (Shaw) Graham of 15 Linden Place, and of 20 Butt Street, Annan. Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


GRAHAM, H. G. R.A.V.C. [Royal Army Veterinary Corps]
I cannot trace this man.

However on the 1911 census there is a Henry G Graham age 10.
Born 1901 in Annan as Harry Gill Graham.
Son of William and Agnes (Paton) Graham of Annan and of 51 Tyneside Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
He enlisted from there as Private (185125) in the Machine Gun Corps on 21 July 1919.
He married Phyllis Ann Davidson in 1922 in Newcastle and died there in 1963.

James was a miller in the Regent Flour Mills of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society on Bunhouse Road in Glasgow when he enlisted.
Born 1896 in Glasgow. Son of Richard Robert Graham and of Mary Ann (Cowan) Graham of 29 Douglas Street, Milngavie, Glasgow who had married in 1893 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire.
Grandson of Mrs Graham of Summergate, Annan.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


GRAHAM, W. R. HIGHRS.
Thought to be:
William Graham – age 41 – Private (288055) 6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was working as a barman at the Commercial Hotel in Annan when he enlisted in 1916. He was posted as Private (278183) to the 1/7th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the summer of 1917 but was transferred to the Gordons.
Born 1877 in Annan. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Johnstone) Graham of 11 Butt Street, Annan. Husband of the late Janet Shearer (Hosie) Graham who he married in 1905 but who died in 1906 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 29 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


GREEN, J. K.O.S.B.
Robert John Green – age 19 – Private (13088) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed four months late during the battle of Loos.
Born 1896 in Dalbeattie as Robert John Green. Son of Joan Green of William Street, Dalbeattie and of Robert Halliday of Craigmath, Dalbeattie.
In 1901, as John Green, he was living with his uncle and aunt, Thomas and Margaret Thomson of North Street, Annan.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan Parish Church memorial as John Green.
