Making a start on all names in alphabetical order.

Robert Dickson Anderson was born in1891 in Leith North, Midlothian. He was resident in Aberdour, Fife when he enlisted at Kirkcaldy, Fife. He was serving as Private 10254 in Old 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment (1st and 2nd Dragoons) when he died, aged 23, in York on 22 March 1915. He is buried in York Cemetery. Soldiers effects names Father – Alexander Brothers – John and William Sister - Georgina and the 1901 census at 7 Lily Place Aberdour lists Alexander 46, Georgina 45, William 15, Georgina 14, John 11 and Robert Anderson 9. The family were still in Aberdour in 1911. (research by Ken Morrison)

2nd Lieutenant William Ballantyne served with 1st Bn The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). He was killed in action on 13th October 1915 and is commemorated on the Loos memorial, Panel 78 to 83, France.

Able Seaman J Carscadden, Royal Naval Reserve Not yet identified from RN, RNR or Merchant Navy records nor CWGC. He may be Joseph Carscadden born about 1881 in Colessie, Fife (living in Hilton Farm, Beath, Fife in 1901 census as a ploughman) but not on the 1911 census so perhaps he was at sea in a civilian ship?

69031 Gunner Walter Connelly served with 111th Siege Bty, Royal Garrison Artillery and was born in Aberdour, Fife. He died on 11 September 1917 and is buried at Bleuet Farm Cemetery I E 33, Belgium.

18708 Pte John Cunningham served with 15th Bn Royal Scots and died on 1 July 1916 at the age of 22. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 6D and 7D, France. He was born in Aberdour, Fife and was the son of Robert and Jemima Cunningham of High St, Aberdour, Fife. Noted by Adam Brown that he was lost in 34th Division’s costly attack at the Somme.

47629 Rifleman John Cuthill served with 2n Bn, Royal Irish Rifles having previously served with the Royal Army Service Corps. He died of wounds on 2 April 1918 aged 26 and is buried at Baubeuge-Centre Cemetery A25, France. He was born in Aberdour, Fife and was the son of John and Isabella Cuthill of Kirk Houses, Aberdour, Fife.

201334 L Cpl George Downie was born in Dairsie, Fife; his father’s name was John. He was working as a ploughman in Aberdour aged 19 in the 1911 census. He served with 6th Bn The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and was killed in action on 21 March 1918. He is buried at Beaumetz-Les-Cambrai Military Cemetery No1, IA, France.

Shown on the memorial as Drew W. A.S.C. Sergeant, he is probably Driver George Munro Drew (T2/14545). His mic shows that at one time he was A/WOII so a rank of Sgt on the memorial can be explained. What is less clear is why the memorial shows his initial as W when his official names were George Munro. Just a ‘known name’ or AKA we presume. He served in No 2 Depot CTC, Royal Army Service Corps. He died on 24 January 1919 at age 28 and is buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Q260, Egypt. He was the son of Joseph Hutton Drew and husband of Isabella Drew of High St, Aberdour, Fife.

more to come

He was born in Linlithgow and was the son of Andrew and Sarah Edwards of 6, Otterson, Aberdour, Fife.

Sapper Robert Ewing Royal Engineers (33662) was born in Aberdour, Fife and was serving with 11th Field Company Royal Engineers when he was killed in action on 20 July 1916 at the age of 24. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 8A and 8D, France. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ewing of Burnside Terrace, Crossgates, Fife.

Yes, Flying Officer George William de Vichelez Le Sueur lost his life in an accident. He was 23.

The Air Ministry announced in Flight Magazine 20 July 1939:
"FLYING ACCIDENTS
F/O George William de Vinchelez Le Sueur (flying solo) lost his life in an accident which occurred near Abu Sueir, Egypt, on July 17"

The narrative is Gloster Gauntlet Mk.II K7885, 102 MU RAF Abu Sueir, Ismalia, Egypt: Written off (destroyed) 17/7/39 when Aileron rod failed, and aircraft dived into ground two miles south east of Abu Suier. Pilot - Flying Officer George William de Vinchelez Le Suer RAF- killed.

According to Ancestry, in January 1937 he had married Helen Marjorie Stewart Leggat in Edinburgh and they had two sons Robert and David.
