The RSF were in the thick of it from the first days of the BEF's contact with the German Army in August 1914 right through until late September. Private Airlie could have been wounded in one of many actions with the Germans during that period. when the BEF was supporting the French Army on the Marne and Aisne defending Paris.

I didn't know Claridges was used as an auxiliary hospital in 1914.

Adam - I picked up the info about Claridges from the Army Registers of Soldiers effects.
The early entries (1914) are very detailed and include date of enlistment, where and occupation.
Similarly the place of death has "Claridges Hos. Paris Wounds received in Action" whereas later entries have "France"
I found an item on the hotel's web-site which confirmed that it had been an auxiliary hospital.

Thanks Ken. That's very interesting about the soldiers' effects entries. Obviously before it all got a bit overwhelming.

Thanks
