"Information has been received by Mr Harry Faunt, Millwright, Haddington, that his youngest son, Private Alexander Faunt, a member of the machine gun section of the 8th Royal Scots (Territorials) has been killed in France. In a letter dated March 1, conveying the news, Captain McEwen writes that a chance shot struck the roadway close to a group of men who were watching the German shells bursting round a church some distance away. They had lost a good comrade - one who looked after the gun and the men under his care with the greatest faithfulness. They had just buried him in the churchyard, which was being shelled an hour before, and some of his old chums were busy preparing a cross for his grave. They were the leaving the village in an hour for other quarters, but, Captain McEwen wrote, but would if possible see that the dead soldier's parents got a photograph of the church someday. Private Faunt was 22 years of age and a member of Haddington Rugby Football Club."

The sculptor Charles Pilkington D'or Jackson's business papers are lodged in the National Library, Edinburgh, Accesssion Number 7445. In Box 2, File 64 there are sketches made by Jackson of the bronze panels for the Haddington memorial including one of the goat and vine motif which is part of the coat of arms. There is no confirmation the work went ahead within the file but I thought it likely Jackson was responsible for the bronze work.

(Glasgow Herald 26th June 1915)
"Bombardier James Smith, Royal Field Artillery, eldest son of Mr Cornelius Smith, Vetch Park, Haddington, has succumbed in Brighton Military Hospital to injuries he received about three months ago while training in the south of England. He was riding a horse, whoch bolted, and being unsaddled he was dragged along the ground by the stirrups for a considerable distance. Both legs were broken, and it became necessary to amputate one. He was 31 years of age, and before enlistment was a draper in Stirling."

John Adams – age 30 – Corporal (49840) Y,19th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
In 1911 John was a carter in a colliery in Ryhope, Sunderland, living with his new wife Margaret.
Born 1885 in Ryhope, Sunderland, County Durham. Son of Hugh and Agnes (Blyth) Adams of North Berwick, East Lothian. Husband of Margaret Litstir (Thomson) Adams of 30 Hope Park, Haddington who he married in 1910 in Ormiston, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 2 July 1916 and buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, France.
Also named on the Ryhope Parish War Memorial and on the North Berwick War Memorial.

ROBERT ADAMSON. ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS
Robert Adamson – age 36 – Private (40982) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was a gamekeeper at Wood End, Stenton, East Lothian when he enlisted as Private (2897) in the Ayrshire Yeomanry in July 1916. He was posted to the 6/7th RSF in France in December 1916. He was wounded and evacuated to the Northampton War Hospital in August 1917. When he had recovered he was posted to the 1st RSF in November. Robert was killed almost a year later near Cambrai.
Born 1881 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow. Son of the late Margaret (Dick) Adamson (died 1897) and of James Adamson of Donibristle, Fife. Husband of Jane Drummond (McGregor) Adamson of Wood End, of Beil Mill, Prestonkirk, East Lothian and of Hardgate, Haddington who he married in 1910 in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Stenton Parish War Memorial.

William Wallace Aitken – age 36 – Private (202141) 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a tailor in West Port, Haddington when he enlisted.
Born 1880 in Tranent, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Charles and Mary (Wallace) Aitken of Tranent. Husband of Harriet Smith (Russell) Aitken of Station Road, Haddington who he married in 1904 in Tranent.
Died of Wounds on 31 May 1918 and buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Haddington and on the Tranent War Memorial.

Robert Alexander – age 25 – Corporal (S/21552) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was a contractor living at St. Lawrence House in Haddington when he enlisted.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Annie Mackie Alexander (died 1914) and of Alexander Alexander, Detective Inspector for Midlothian County Police.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

WILLIAM ALLAN. A. & S. HIGHLANDERS
William Allan – age 26 – Private (359) 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William was a labourer when he enlisted in August 1909. He served in Malta and in India until the battalion returned to the UK in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but due to illness he was evacuated home in December. He rejoined the battalion and moved with them to Salonica in northern Salonica in November 1916. William contracted malaria and died.
Born 1892 in Haddington. Son of the late Mary Ann (Lorimer) Allan (died 1908) and of Robert Allan of Cairns Close Haddington. Husband of Jeannie (Easton)Allan of 10 Upper Bridge Street, Stirling who he married in 1916 in Stirling.
Died on Service on 23 November 1918 and buried in Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece.

SERGt. DAVID ANDERSON. GORDON HIGHLANDERS
David Anderson – age 24 – Sergeant (382) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
In 1911 David, age 19, was serving with the Gordons in Colchester, Essex. The battalion returned to England from Cairo and landed at Zeebrugge in October 1914.
Born 1892 in Edinburgh. Son of David and Elizabeth (Turner) Anderson of Nungate, Haddington.
Missing in Action on 20 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Morham Parish War Memorial together with his brother Alexander who died on 17 June 1915.
