Wigtownshire Free Press (1/11/1917): Killed in action on 17 October, Midshipman Archibald Douglas Moir RN, HMS Marlborough, aged 17, second son of Mr & Mrs JW Moir, Dunmer, Alloa. Temporatily on duty in HMS Mary Rose.

Note: HMS Mary Rose, launched on 8 October 1915, was an Admiralty M-class destroyer sunk on 17 October 1917 approximately 70 miles east of Lerwick in an action off Lerwick while escorting a convoy of 12 merchant ships from Norway.

Wigtownshire Free Press (23/8/1918): Mr Downie, 6 John Street, Ayr, late of Cairnryan, has received a letter from an officer at the front, informing that his son, Pte John Downie, Royal Scots, was killed in action on the 1st inst. Pte Downie joined the Army in 1916, and had been on active service for about twelve months. Previous to enlistment, he was in the employment of the G and SW Railway Coy at Ayr.

A little more on William Trueman.

Wigtownshire Free Press (12/9/1918): Mrs Thorburn, Drummockloch, Cairnryan, has received official notice that her son, William, died on 27th August in 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, of tetanus (lockjaw). Pte Trueman, who was only 19 years of age, enlisted in September 1914. This is Mrs Thorburn's second son who has given his life for his country, while another is on active service in France.
