Happy New Year! A challenge to start off 2018.

Buoyed with the success of finding David Simpson, I now present a list of men whose names also appear on on the Bo'ness War Memorial, but we have had no success in finding so far.

Any suggestions, clues, pointers would be gratefully accepted.

The names are:

H. Brown

James Brown

John Douglas

Robert Drummond

Albert Hanley

Herbert Hanley

Victor Hanley

John Hannah

Thomas Kerr

George McCredie

Donald McGregor

John Morison

James Naismith

Hugh Orr

William Paterson

James Riley

Daniel Robertson

Daniel Snedden

John Telfer

Henry Thomson

Any help will be greatly appreciated, and of course fully acknowldeged in our outputs.

All the best,

G67

Victor Hanley (only one I could find in UK & Ireland)

All from Ancestry:

1901 Census, Living at 29 Old Mill Road, Lancashire
Thomas Hanley, age 27, Cotton Warper, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Sarah Ellen Hanley, age 25, born Cloughfold (?), Lancashire
Vernon Hanley, age 7, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Victor Hanley, age 5, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Robert Hanley, age 2, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Ellen Hanley, age 8 months, born Stacksteads, Lancashire

1911 Census, Living at 5 Davis Street, Oldham, Lancashire
George Moores, age 41, Coachman, born Oldham in Lancashire
Wife, Sarah Ellen Moores, age 35, born Cloughfold in Lancashire (1 child born, 1 still living)
Vernon Hanley, age 17, Cotton Piecer, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Victor Hanley, age 15, Cotton Piecer, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Robert Hanley, age 12, Scholar, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Nellie Hanley, age 10, Scholar, born Stacksteads, Lancashire
Constance Moores, age 1, born Oldham, Lancashire

Birth Index: Victor Hanley born (July Quarter), Haslingden district, Lancashire
Marriage Index: 1923 between a Victor Hanley & a Mary E. Ripley (October Quarter) in Oldham, Lancashire
Death Index: March 1965 for 69 year old Victor Hanley (Born c1896)

Silver War Badge:
V. Hanley, Private, Lancashire Fusiliers, No. 5307. Enlisted 2nd September 1914. Discharged 29th April 1919. Age 23
Served Overseas. Silver War Badge & Certificate No. 359,665.

Unfortunately, only the initial appears on the Silver War Badge record, so it could be either Victor or Vernon but after doing ‘the sums’, I think the Fusilier is Victor.

He may have worked in Bo’ness and never went back after he was discharged so no-one knew what had happened to him.

It doesn’t appear that he’s related to either of the other Hanleys on your list.

Census images & Silver War Badge details sent to your personal e-mail.

DANIEL SNEDDEN.
The Linlithgowshire Gazette of Friday 26 November 1915 p.2 reported that the band of the 2/7th Royal Scots is now at Innerleithen.......... The principal clarionet players are Daniel Sneddon and R. Robertson, formerly of the Kinneil Band.
(The band still exists in Bo'ness)
On 15/11/1912 he advertised his services as a clarionet soloist at 17 South Street, Bo-'ness.

This is a strong candidate. I have the death cerificate for Daniel Sneddon who died in 1920 but there is nothing that mentions war service. Will keep looking into this one. Thanks Kenneth.

This is spot on - BUT he is already accounted for as the name James Reilly also appears on the Bo'ness War Memorial.

Looking at valuation roll info we can see Margaret Orr lived at 35 Castleloan until 1930, and then in 1935 the house tenant became Hugh Orr. This was likely to have been her son, although it may have been a relation. Again - will look into that.

An added mystery to finding Hugh Orr.

St Andrews Church in Bo'ness has three WW1 memorials. See A stained glass window, a wooden plaque and and an illustrated ROH, hand painted by David Clark of Bo'ness Pottery. The ROH was presumably first to appear and it mentions a "W. Orr HLI" as being killed in action.

We thought this referred to Walter Orr 15032 who also appears on the Bo'ness War Memorial.

The other two memorials both contain "Hugh Orr" and Walter Orr is missing. Any thoughts on that?
