"Word has been received from the War Office by Mr Archibald Smith, Hall Street, Innerleithen, that his son, Archibald J. Smith, 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, had been killed in action on March 17. He was 23 years of age, and previous to enlisting in September was employed by the Carron Company at Craigbank Colliery, Polmont. He had only been six weeks in France."
