Arrochar - Dumbarton, Helensburgh District

The Arrochar war memorial is in the form of a churchyard cross, recognisable by its more slender shaft and small cross-head. These crosses were traditionally erected to the south of pre-reformation churches to denote consecrated ground. It is carved in a freestone and has a particularly attractive lettering. It stands by the roadside above the village (on the left hand side as you approach Arrochar from Tarbert (Loch Lomond).
Apologies for the photographs which don't do the memorial justice, it stands in quite a dark spot and I've never managed to get a decent shot, if anyone can contribute a better pic then great!

(Glasgow Herald 24th April 1915)
"Mr & Mrs James Gillies, Ruglass Cottage, Arrochar, have four sons serving in the 2nd Gordon Highlanders. Three of them, who are in the Regulars, have been wounded and are at home recovering. Private Dougald Gillies, who is 28 years of age, has been seriously wounded in the stomach, leg and face by shrapnel. Sergeant Duncan Gillies, who is 26 years of age, was wounded at Ypres in November, being shot through both legs. He has been about nine years in the Regulars. He was wounded while coming out of the trenches by shrapnel. Piper James Gillies, who is a year younger, has been about 9 1/2 years in the Regulars and was wounded in the ankle. The youngest of the quartet is Private Malcolm Gillies. He is about 18 years of age and in training at Aberdeen. Sergeant Duncan Gillies is a champion wrestler."

He was "Killed in Action" on the first day of the battle of the Somme aged 20.
