Jim

Can you give more detail on the road junction? I stopped at Daviot last year and couldn’t find it.

Hi Jim,
Many thanks for posting the photo's, eacellent. I would like to add a little light regarding L.Cpl.Alexander Maclean.

Alexander Maclean was born in Inverness in 1885/6. At the outbreak of war he was living at 37 Bedford Road, Bootle, Liverpool, which had been his address since 1908 and was employed by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company on the Flamenco. Liverpool soon raised four Pals battaions. These being numbered 17th-20th King's Liverpool battaions. Alexander enlisted into the 20th battalion on the 5th November, 1914 in Liverpool. He was five feet nine and a half, with brown hair and brown eyes. The four Liverpool Pals battalions sailed for France on the 7th November, 1915. They wouldn't take part in any major action until the fateful day of 1st July, 1916. The Liverpool's this day would help in the capture of Montauban and Alexanders own battalion would capture the briqueterie (brick works) which to this day can still be easily traced. Sadly 22475 L.Cpl.Alexander Maclean was killed in action on the 1st July and his body was never idientified. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

Regards,
Bill

ps i will add some photo's once i've mastered this excellent site.

Thanks Bill, the information on Alexander Maclean is very interesting.
Sorry Adam, the photograph was taken some years ago and I'm afraid all I've noted is 'location - road junction'...not very helpful!...but it doesn't look too hard to miss.

I was passing Daviot tonight and I noticed it is split up into East and West Daviot by the A9.

I was looking for the memorial near the church in West Daviot but is actually in East Daviot.

Looking up the OS map it is quite clearly marked. The OS ref is NH 723 388

The places the men come from on this memorial covers a large area from Farr to the South and Culloden Moor to the North as well as Milton of Leys overlooking Inverness.

Note the Commanding Officer of 18th Division which was captured in Singapore one week after landing in 1942 is commemorated on this memorial. He is also commemorated in the local Episcopal Church. See:
