Wigtownshire Free Press (30/6/1916): Mr and Mrs James Leadbetter, 101 Williamson Street, Girvan, have received a letter from their son, Private Robt Leadbetter, informing them that he is located in hospital in England, suffering from shell shock. Private Leadbetter emigrated to Canada some six years ago, and shortly after the outbreak of war he inlisted in the Canadian Army, and has been in France for a year. Prior to emigrating he was employed as a mason with his father.

Wigtownshire Free Press (2/11/1916): Private John Blair, Autralian Expeditionary Force, who was posted missing sine July 26, is a son of Mr James Blair, a native of Girvan. He is 20 years of age.

Wigtownshire Free Press (30/11/1916): Private John Blair, Australian Imperial Forces, who was previously reported as missing, is now officially reported killed on July 26. Private Blair was in his 21st year, and a son of Mr James Blair, late of the Hamilton Stables, Girvan, and now residing in Yoker, Glasgow. Prior to enlisting Pte Blair was engaged in agricultural work in Sydney, having gone to Australia shortly before the war broke out. He came from a family well known and still represented in Girvan, and received his education at Girvan Burgh School.

Wigtownshire Free Press (9/11/1916): Information has reached Girvan that Private Hugh Alexander McWhirter, KOSB, has been posted as missing since September 25. Private McWhirter, who is about 19 years of age, is a son of H McWhirter, 38 Glendoune Street, Girvan. His twin brother, Trooper Edward McWhirter, is serving with the Ayrshire Imperial Yeomanry.

Thanks for the McWhirter details Mike. I'd missed that he was on this memorial.
He is also named on the Minnigaff Parish War Memorial in Kirkcudbrightshire as:

Pte. ALEX. McWHIRTER
Alexander Hugh McWhirter age 18 Private (40793) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander enlisted in October 1914 in the 2/5th KOSB.
Born 1898 in Girvan, Ayrshire as Hugh Alexander McWhirter (Source:SNWM and GRoS Birth Register)
Son of Hugh and Maggie Jane (McNairn) McWhirter who had married in Minnigaff in 1897.
On the birth register entry Maggie Jane is shown as deceased and in 1901 Hugh, age 3, was living with his grandparents, John and Elizabeth McNairn, in Creebridge Village, Minnigaff.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1916 and buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France.
Also named on the Creebridge Free Church Memorial now in Penninghame Parish Church.

Wigtownshire Free Press (7/12/1916): Mrs Herron, 29 Ballybroke Street, Girvan, has been officially informed that her son, Able Seaman Samuel McCrindle Clark, RND, was killed on November 13. Seaman Clark was 27 years of age, and a fisherman by occupation. He served the full term of five years in the RN Reserve, and had re-engaged another term some considerable time before war broke out. He was called up on August 3 1914, and the following day he left - one of a score of local reservists - for the south of England. For some time Seaman Clark served on board a mine sweeper, and fully a year ago transferred to the RND, with which he had been in France some time before his death. He was well known, especially among the fishing community, but also to the inhabitants of Girvan generally.

Wigtownshire Free Press (28/12/1916): Miss Isa McCrindle, Balcamie, Stair Park, Girvan, has been officially informed that her brother, Private Robert McCrindle, HLI, has been missing since November 18th. Miss McCrindle has also received a letter from an officer in her brother's company giving the same information, and stating that he can hold out no hope for Private McCrindle being alive. Private McCrindle is the youngest son of the late John McCrindle, shepherd, Ardwell. He enlisted in June of this year, and went on active service in September. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a shepherd at Ardwell. He is 23 years of age.

Wigtownshire Free Press: Mrs James McCrorie, Orange Arch, Girvan, has received intimation that her brother, Pte William McDines, Canadian Mounted Rifles, has been posted as wounded and missing since October. Private McDines, a son of the late Mr H McDines, Gas Lane, Girvan, was as a youth employed in Mr Armstrong's wool mill prior to emigrating to Canada some eight years ago. He is unmarried and well known in Girvan. Pte McDines is 29 years of age.

Wigtownshire Free Press (12/4/1917): Mr and Mrs Robert Hislop, 10 Glendaune Street, Girvan, have received official intimation that their son, Able Seaman Archibal Hislop, Royal Naval Division, has been posted as missing since 4th February last, and letters from one of his comrades unfortunately leave no room for doubt that Able Seaman Hislop has made the supreme sacrifice. Able Seaman Hislop was 22 years of age and a native of Girvan. He served his apprenticeship as a baker with Mr Wm Davidson, Dalrymple Street, Girvan, and prior to the war he was employed in his trade at Armadale. The deceased's father has been on active service on a mine sweeper in the North Sea for the past eighteen months, and another brother is also serving afloat.

Wigtownshire Free Press (30/8/1917): Mrs Ness, residing with her mother, Mrs Irving, Hamilton Street, Girvan, has received official intimation to the effect that her husband, Private W Ness, Scots Guards, was killed in action in France on 5th August. Private Ness was a native of Kilmarnock, and was 31 years of age. As a youth he enlisted in the Regular Army, serving a term in the Scots Guards, and, leaving the Army in February 1907 he joined the Ayrshire Constabulary.

Wigtownshire Free Press (30/8/1917): Second-Lieutenant William Girvan Austin, RSF (died of wounds), was 20 years of age and the younger son of Mr and Mrs James Austin, Neville Cottage, Girvan. Enlisting in November 1914, he obtained his commission in the RSF exactly a year later, and was subsequently was appointed under their Scottish Command Supervisor of Physical Training and Bayonet Fighting - an appointment which he held until February last, when he went up to the Front.
