Anne - in 1881 James (a railway engine driver) and Ann and their family were in Fraserburgh. John was 10 so born c.1871.
In 1891 Ann and the family were in Wellington St. Aberdeen. John, 20, was an unemployed mason.
By 1917 he would have been about 46 - too old for military service?????

There's some interesting service background for Gordon on the South African War Graves site (photo2) - See "Useful Links" for the link - but there's nothing for Brandie there.

Sorry Anne but you're losing me.
The John Brandie born in Woodside in 1891 was the eldest son of George and Margaret Brandie.
George was an engine driver born c.1868 in Old Meldrum.

I put John Brandie (with a father named James) into the Ancestry search and got two results.
1. was a John A. Brandie born c.1880 Old Aberdeen whose father James was a Police Sergeant.

2. was a John Brandie born c.1871 Old Meldrum the second son of James, a railway engine driver. The eldest boy was George P Brandie born c.1869 in Old Meldrum!

So they were related!
