FRANK GRINDALL, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Also named on the Motherwell War Memorial and on the Moffat War Memorial in Dumfriesshire.
Frank Grindall – age 27 – Private (7776) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank had spent 9 years in the KOSB as Private (2686) and had served in the South African War. He had worked in the Dalzell Steel Works in Motherwell and he was a parcel delivery van driver in Moffat for the Caledonian Railway Company when he re-enlisted. Frank joined his battalion in France on 17 February 1915 but was killed two months later.
Born 1888 in Moffat. Son of the late Emily (Rae) Grindall and of Robert Grindall of Moffat. Husband of Christina McLean (Green) Grindall, later Mrs Walter Henry Starling, of Gartland Cottage, Moffat and of 76 Range Road, Flemington, who he married in 1912 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. _________________ Ken |

WILLIAM CLAPPERTON, Cameron Highlanders.
Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:
C.S.M. WILLIAM CLAPPERTON. Scottish Rifles
William Clapperton – age 44 – Company Sergeant Major (11426) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
William was a groom, aged 19, when he enlisted as Private (2658) in the Cameron Highlanders in October 1891 and he served in Malta, Sudan, Egypt and South Africa before he transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1902. His service was completed in October 1903.
He came to Motherwell in 1906 and was working in the Dazell Steel Works when war broke out. He enlisted and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1872 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Sibbald Clapperton (died 1878) and of John Clapperton and step-son of Jessie (Brown) Calpperton of High Street, Galashiels. Husband of Mary Jane (Bathgate) Clapperton of 22 Parkhead Street, Motherwell who he married in 1903 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 6 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Motherwell War Memorial and on the South Dalziel Parish Church memorial in Motherwell _________________ Ken |
