There is a green between the railway station and the main thoroughfare of the town. On the green stands a large white flagpole with a weathervane on top. On the pole are two plaques. The upper one has the following text:

Burgh of Maybole
erected by
ex-Provost James Miller
in memory of
his son James
and all men in Maybole who
gave their lives in the great
wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945
September 1945

The lower plaque reads:

Carrick’s Victoria Crosses

Lieutenant, Later Colonel
William James Mongomery Cuninghame V.C.
1st Battalion The RifleBrigade
Crimea 20th November 1854

Sergeant Samuel McGaw V.C.
42nd Royal Highlanders The Black Watch
Ashanti 21st January 1874

Presented by
Maybole Branch
The Royal British Legion Scotland
2007

More about the ceremony connected to the addition of the second plaque and details of the two men honoured can be found at http://www.maybole.org/history/Archives/memorials/victoriacross.htm

thanks for posting this Graeme, an excellent first post on the forum. Do you have any photos that you could post on the forum itself? (send me a PM if you need a hand posting photos).
