Those are some nice clear shots of the memorial Anne. Thanks for posting them.

I was interested in Alan McArthur's rank H.Q.S.but looking him up in SDGW / CWGC he is a Gunner.

McArthur, Alan F., H. Q. S., Royal Field Artillery

McARTHUR, A
Rank: Gunner
Service No: 7129
Date of Death: 30/08/1916
Regiment/Service:Royal Field Artillery , 106th Bde. H.Q.
Grave Reference: S. 30.
Cemetery: CARNOY MILITARY CEMETERY

Surname: McARTHUR
Forename: Alan
Rank: Gnr
Service number: 7129
Place of birth: Alloa Stirling
Date of death: 30 August 1916
Theatre of death: F&F
SNWM roll: ROYAL HORSE AND ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY
Unit name: Unknown Unit attached to ROYAL HORSE AND ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY

If his unit was 106th Bde. H.Q. perhaps H.Q.S. stands for Headquarters Signaller?

Great photos Anne. I was curious about Ross, W. J. J. Armstrong P., Sapper, Royal Engineers.
It's such an unusual permutation of names and intials Confused
I see his full name ROSS, WILLIAM JAMES (JOHN ARMSTRONG PRIMROSE) is at the family grave

His childhood/school days must have been fun Rolling Eyes

H.Q.S. - I have no idea what this might mean, but Headquarters Signaller sounds appropriate.

I've got so many queries on the go just now that a rank is the LEAST of my problems!!

As for William Ross - you're right Ken. He'd either be proud of his list of names or mortified every time the register was read out!

It's a lovely memorial and obviously well cared for.

I believe there was also some sort of Roll of Honour done by the school which I found reference to in the same newspaper. It was reported to have held (at the time) 374 names, 75 holding commissions and 18 dead. Unfortunately, I don't have the date for the article but it's obviously been a good bit prior to 1919.

I'll see if I can find anything out about the roll.

Anne
