The surname of SIEVEWRIGHT has drawn my attention, very unusual.

There are only 5 of this surname listed on the CWGC for the Great War:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?surname=sievewright&initials=&war=1&yearfrom=1900&yearto=2000&force=&nationality=&send.x=33&send.y=11

Peter and William (of the Dragoons) appear to be brothers:

Name: SIEVEWRIGHT, PETER
Initials: P
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 1st/5th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 31/07/1917
Service No: 266599
Additional information: Son of Alexander and Annie Sievewright, of Moss Side, Monellie, Forgue, Aberdeenshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: A. 7.
Cemetery: NO MAN'S COT CEMETERY

Name: SIEVEWRIGHT, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish)
Age: 23
Date of Death: 27/11/1918
Service No: 152765
Additional information: Son of Alexr. and Annie Sievewright, of Forgue, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: XI. E. 4.
Cemetery: TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE

However, there are no records of any John Sievewrights though 2 are listed on this memorial.

SDGW doesn't feature any John Sievewrights either.

Interestingly, in the medal index cards, is an entry for:

Medal card of Sievewright, J
Corps Regiment
Scottish Churches Huts

I've never came across this unit before.

One of the Johns turns up with the spelling "SIEVWRIGHT" on the CWGC:

Name: SIEVWRIGHT, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Date of Death: 04/06/1915
Service No: 10825
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 39 to 41.
Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL

The other Johns surname is also corrupted:

Name: SEIVWRIGHT, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 31/07/1917
Service No: 266190
Additional information: Son of John and Jessie Seivwright, of Corvichen, Drumblade, Aberdeenshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 38.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

This is not an unusual surname in the North East.

These are variations on the name, possibly mis-spellings. 226190 L/Cpl John Seivwright, Corvichen, Drumblade is recorded at Gartly ( neighbouring parish), where it is understood he was a farm servant at Kirkhill, as SEIV. I am aware from another source that the man named at Gartly came from Corvichen.

See
http://www.kinnethmont.co.uk/gartly/index.htm

and
http://www.kinnethmont.co.uk/gartly/images/ww1-text.jpg

He is similarly recorded on CWGC and SNWM.

Surname SEIVWRIGHT
Firstname John
Service Number 266190
Date Death 31/07/1917
Decoration
Place of birth
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Rank L/Cpl
Theatre of death F.& F.

There is no SEIVWRIGHT on the 6th Gordons casualty roll but there is a Pte John SIEVWRIGHT shown as born Drumblade. There is a Pte John SEIVWRIGHT on the memorial at Huntly. It records " Men of Huntly who fell......"

He is likely the man on SNWM below, with no NOK on CWGC.

Surname SIEVWRIGHT
Firstname John
Service Number 10825
Date Death 04/06/1915
Decoration
Place of birth Drumblade Aberdeenshire
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.

Clearly there were two John S****** , one a Pte the other L/Cpl ) in the 6th Gordons, but one is absent from their roll. Both are correctly recorded at Drumblade.

You should realise that the parishes of Huntly, Drumblade and Gartly meet just outside the Huntly town boundary. Corvichen is on the outskirts of Huntly, but in the parish of Drumblade. It is not unusual for a man to be recorded on several memorials, as is the case here, albeit, with different spellings of his surname.

I'd remembered Spoons posting something about Scottish Church Huts before. You can find an entry here at Hightae UF Church

A Reverend George Paterson (one 't') served in the Scottish Huts and YMCA during the war and survived.

A new panel bearing the name of the sole Drumblade casualty of WW2 was dedicated at Drumblade today.
The war memorial now bears the name of Sandy Hunter 69 years after his death in Tunisia. He was a member of the Regular Army who enlisted in 1936.

ALEXANDER HUNTER

Serjeant
4 Regt., Royal Horse Artillery

who died on
Wednesday 8th September 1943. Age 26.

Additional information: Son of John and Bella Hunter, of ( Braehead) Bainshole, Aberdeenshire.

Grave/Memorial Reference: VI. G. 10.
Cemetery: MASSICAULT WAR CEMETERY, Tunis, Tunisia.

Jim

Great to see this happening after all these years. Do you know why his names wasn't added after the war and who was behind having it added now?

Kind regards

Adam

We are not sure why it was not added earlier, it just wasn't dealt at the time and I suppose the passage of time played a part. Although the family long felt his name should be there, I expect they felt it was not for them to organise.
Bear in mind, in many cases WW2 names were only added 10, or more, years after hostilities ceased, in some cases not at all, as here.
The community has now rectified the omission, his only surviving brother unveiled it.

Good point Jim, it was well after the Second World War before a lot of communities added the names. Good to know this was righted and Serjeant Hunter's brother was there to see it.

Thanks
