J. PATERSON, 13th R.S. FRANCE 18, JANY. 1917.
John Paterson – age 30 – Private (33989) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a railway surfaceman and was living at Newbiggin, Wamphray when he married in 1913. He died of disease in hospital in Rouen.
Born 1886 in Wamphray. Son of the late William and Joan or Jackie (Campbell) Paterson of Newbiggin, Wamphray. Husband of Jessie Agnes (Arnold) Paterson of Templeland, Lochmaben who he married in 1913 in Lochmaben.
Died on Active Service on 18 January 1917 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

G. THOMSON, 3rd K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1, OCTR. 1916.
Thought to be:
George Thomson – age 31 – Private (38385) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
George was a munitions worker, living in Lady Street, Annan when he married on Christmas Eve 1915. He enlisted as Private (23222) in the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the KOYLI while in France.
Born 1885 at Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Janet (Burgess) Thomson of Cove Cottage and of Irvington, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Mary (Millar) Thomson of Clone Farm, Palnackie, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1915 in Blythswood, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 1 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish War Memorial.

J. WAUGH, 1st SEAFORTHS, MESOPOTAMIA 28, JUNE 1916.
John Alexander Waugh – age 21 – Private (S/13234) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John enlisted as Private (21706) in the Cameron Highlanders in December 1915. He was posted to the 1st Seaforths in Mesopotamia but was accidentally drowned.
Born 1894 in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Beck) Waugh of Willows, Wamphray, Beattock.
Died on Active Service on 28 June 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

1939 – 1945

D. BORTHWICK, 6th S.H.
David Borthwick – age 22 – Private (14587841) 6th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
David was employed by the Forestry Commission in the Beattock area when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in early 1943. He was posted to the Seaforths.
Born 1922 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Turnbull Borthwick and Jean (Rankine) Borthwick of Plantationfoot, Wamphray.
Missing in Action on 17 April 1944 and named on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.

J. M. GIBSON, R.A.F.
John Murray Gibson – age 20 – Sergeant (642202) 51 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
John was working at the Dumfriesshire Creamery at Lockerbie when he enlisted in the RAF as a wireless operator in May 1939. His Whitley bomber took off from RAF Dishforth in Yorkshire for a raid on Keil but reportedly developed engine trouble over the North Sea and was lost without trace.
Born 1921 in Wamphray. Son of James Alexander Gibson and Elizabeth Mills (Wright) Gibson of the Mill, Wamphray and of Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1941 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

A. McCORMICK, 5th K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Alfred Nelson Edgar McCormick – age 30 – Corporal (3187775) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alfred was accidentally killed during an exercise at the 52nd Division Battle School at Dulsie Wood, Ardclach, Nairnshire.
Born 1911 in Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Edgar) McCormick of Powillimount, Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Active Service on 29 July 1942 and buried in Ardersier Parish Churchyard, Fort George, Inverness-shire.

W. MUIRHEAD, 1st L.S.
William Muirhead – age 24 – Private (3195326) 1st Battalion, The London Scottish, Gordon Highlanders.
William was educated at Sanquhar Public School and was a dairyman at The Drum farm in Thornhill when he enlisted in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the London Scottish and served in Palestine, North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Born 1919 in Sanquhar, Dumfriessshire. Son of John and Elizabeth (Geddes) Muirhead of Langside, Wamphray and of Johnstone Bridge, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 12 January 1944 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.
