Theophilus John McLeod Mitchell, aka McLeod Mitchell, is listed on Bonnybridge Civic Memorial as T. J. M. Mitchell, Sapper, Royal Engineers.

He is listed on a family gravestone in Camelon St. John's Churchyard as one of three brothers who fell in the Great War.

On further research, I found the following newspaper report on him:

Falkirk Herald, 24th April 1915, ‘Bonnybridge - Death of Private Mitchell, Royal Engineers’
It is with regret that we have to record the death of Private Theophilus John McLeod Mitchell of the Signalling Section, Royal Engineers which took place at his father’s residence, Broomfield Terrace, Springburn on Saturday last. Deceased who was in his twenty-second year, was a native of the village, he being a son of Mr. James Mitchell, who for a long number of years resided in Bonnybridge. Private Mitchell, on the outbreak of war, enlisted in the Royal Engineers and while undergoing training at Gailes he contracted a severe chill. His illness extended over a matter of six weeks. Prior to enlisting, he was employed in the drawing office of the Caledonian Railway Company Engineering Works at St. Rollox.

I can't see his name on the Caledonian Railway memorial (but it might be there somewhere!)

His Death Certificate details:
Theophilus John McLeod Mitchell, Engineer’s Draughtsman, age 22
Son of James Mitchell, Ironfoundry Patternmaker and Mary-Ann Mitchell nee Costelow
Died 17th April 1915 at 6 Broomfield Terrace, (Springburn) Glasgow
Cause of Death: Acute Pulmonary Tubercuosis
No mention of his military service is recorded.

I can't find any military records for him. Would there be anything if, (as the newspaper reports) he was still in training?

Anne

Anne - there wouldn't be a Medal Roll or Card since he didn't go overseas.
I don't see a "service return" for him on SPeople just the death in Springburn so I'm wondering if he was discharged from the army during the "6 weeks" of his illness.
Without a Service/Pension record it's all guess work I'm afraid. Crying or Very sad

Thanks Ken.

I had searched high and low for a McLeod Mitchell before I realised his 'Sunday' name! Laughing

Do you think he would qualify as a non-comm or not?

We would need proof that he was discharged because he had been diagnosed with TB - and that he had contracted it while a serving soldier.
It is possible that he already had the illness when he enlisted and the "chill" was the disease becoming visible - but without a service record??????
I suspect that the technical expression is "nae chance"!

Sorry.

Thanks for that Matt.

Was this on S.P?

I obviously downloaded his DC, but didn't search for anything else.
