Three of the four men from this parish were killed in Normandy in June/July 1944.


JAMES JOHN JARDINE, SCOTS GUARDS.
James John Jardine – age 36 – Lance Corporal (2699338) 4th Battalion, Scots Guards.
“John” was employed at Mossband, Gretna when he joined up in 1940.
The 4th Scots Guards was formed in 1941 but was disbanded before it could go overseas. However an independent company joined the 3rd Battalion of the Irish Guards and took part in the battle to take Cagny near Caen in Normandy. John was buried there but was re-interred in Banneville in August 1945.
Born 1907 in Middlebie. Son of Robert and Isabella (Thompson) Jardine of The Crook, Middlebie. Husband of Janet Buchannan (Moir) Jardine of Waterbeck House and of Old Rattray, Perthshire who he married in 1943 in Middlebie.
Killed in Action on 20 July 1944 and buried in Banneville-la-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, Franece.
Also named on the Waterbeck Church memorial.


ROBERT WILLIAM JOHNSTONE, ROYAL NAVY.
Robert William Johnstone – age 19 – Ordinary Seaman (D/JX 166397) H.M.S. Repulse, Royal Navy.
The battleship “Prince of Wales” and the battlecruiser “Repulse” were sunk north of Singapore, off the east coast of Malaya by land-based bombers and torpedo bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Born 1923 in Middlebie. Son of Mrs Johnstone of Belmont, Eaglesfield.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 10 December 1941 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


ALEXANDER ALLAN LOCKERBIE, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS.
Alexander Allan Lockerbie – age 19 – Lance Corporal (14515435) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
The 11th RSF landed at Normandy shortly after the initial D-Day landings on 6 June and fought in the battle for Caen in Operation Martlet at Fonteney.
Born 1925 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Catherine Lockerbie of Cushethill Cottages, Eaglesfield.
Killed in Action on 26 June 1944 and buried in Ryes War Cemetery, Bazenville, Calvados, France.


THOMAS WILSON, BLACK WATCH.
Thomas Wilson – age 29 – Lance Sergeant (3194804) 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
The 1st, 5th and 7th Battalions of the Black Watch were all landed in Normandy on or shortly after D Day, 6 June 1944. They were heavily involved in the actions leading to the breakout from Caen and the Falaise Gap, the 5th Battalion in particular experiencing severe fighting at Breville. Thomas was buried there but was re-interred at Hermanville in July 1945. Born 1914 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Helen or Ellen Jane (Renwick) Wilson of Land Cottage, Ecclefechan.
Killed in Action on 11 June 1944 and buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
