T./Lt. Alexander Davidson Stuart, Sea. Highrs.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a company. He took over the front line under most trying conditions and a heavy barrage fire, setting a fine example to his men.

Named on the Melrose War Memorial in Roxburghshire as:

and on the Darnick Village, Melrose as:
SGT. W.K. REDPATH, M.M. & BAR. 1st CAM. Hrs.

Walter Kerr Redpath, Military Medal – age 25 – Sergeant (20370) 1st Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Walter was serving with the 1st Cameron Highlanders in Edinburgh at the outbreak of war and as Private (8684) he landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914. He transferred to the 1st MGC when it was formed in January 1916.
The announcement of Walter's Military Medal was made in September 1916, a month after his death, but I cannot trace the award of a second M.M.
Born 1891 in Walkerburn, Peebleshire. Son of the late Margaret (Kerr) Redpath (died 1891) and of John Redpath of Darnick, Melrose. Step-son of Jane (Hogarth or Smith) Redpath of North Berwick and of Montreal, Canada.
John and Jane married in 1894 in Edinburgh and by 1901 the family were living in North Berwick, East Lothian. John, Jane and their two youngest children, Thomas and John, emigrated to Canada in May 1911.
Killed in Action on 31 August 1916 and buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.

In 1911 John was a carter in a colliery in Ryhope, Sunderland, living with his new wife Margaret.
Born 1885 in Ryhope, Sunderland, County Durham. Son of Hugh and Agnes (Blyth) Adams of North Berwick. Husband of Margaret Litstir (Thomson) Adams of 30 Hope Park, Haddington, East Lothian who he married in 1910 in Ormiston, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 2 July 1916 and buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, France.
Also named on the Ryhope Parish War Memorial.

Norman McKay Arundel – age 22 – Leading Telegraphist (240182) H.M.S. Amphion, Royal Navy.
Norman joined the navy as a “Boy” in December 1907. He qualified as a Telegraphist in 1911 and he joined the scout-cruiser “Amphion” when she was commissioned in April 1913. She became a destroyer flotilla leader in mid-1914. While patrolling on the first full day of the war, “Amphion” and her destroyers encountered and sank a German minelayer, SMS Kφnigin Luise, but not before she had laid many of her mines. While returning from patrolling the following morning, “Amphion” struck a mine off the Thames Estuary and sank with the loss of 132 crewmen. She was the first ship of the Royal Navy to be sunk in the First World War.
Born 1892 in North Berwick. Son of John Williamson Arundel and of Jane (Forson) Arundel of 10 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 6 August 1914 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.

Robert Thomson Arundel – age 35 – Sapper (503357) 1st Tunnelling Company, Canadian Engineers.
Robert enlisted in the Imperial Yeomanry in January 1902 and as Private (40454) he went to South Africa in May but he was discharge at Aldershot at his own request in October. He emigrated to Winnipeg in Canada in March 1904 and he was working as a railway company track layer and construction foreman when he enlisted at Vernon, British Columbia in September 1915. He sailed with the 2nd Tunnelling Company from Halifax, Nova Scotia in January 1916 and landed in France in March. He suffered from shell shock after being buried by an explosion near Ypres and he was evacuated to hospital in Bristol in June 1916. He returned to France in March 1917.
Born 1881 in North Berwick. Son of John Williamson Arundel and of Jane (Forson) Arundel of 10 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 8 November 1917 and buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium.

W.F. GARDINER BAIRD. CAPT
William Frank Gardiner Baird – age 29 – Captain, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment attached to the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
William was educated at Eton College and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned in November 1903 in the 7th Dragoon Guards and in the Scots Guards in February 1905. He transferred to the Reserve of Officers in February 1906. William was posted from the Reserve as Captain in August 1914 and landed in France in October but he was fatally wounded three weeks later and died in hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1885 at Inch House, Liberton, Midlothian. Son of Sir William James Gardiner Baird, Bart. and the Hon. Lady Baird (Arabella Rose Evelyn Hozier Cecil) of Saughton Hall, Midlothian. Husband of Violet Mary (Croft) Baird of Nether Abbey, North Berwick and of Wareside, Ware, Hertfordshire who he married in 1910 at Ware.
Died of Wounds on 5 November 1914 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.


R.F. BALMAIN. CAPT
Roy Frederick Balmain, Military Cross – age 23 – Captain, 51st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
“Roy” was commissioned in the RFA in August 1914 and joined his brigade in France in September 1916. He was awarded an MC as T./Lt. (A./Capt.) Roy Frederic Balmain, R.F.A. in May 1918.
Born 1895 in Edinburgh as Robert Frederic Balmain. Son of the late Kate (Field) Balmain of Elmbank, North Berwick (died 1917) and of James Charles Halyburton Balmain of 21 Salisbury Place. Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 1 October 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.

Alexander Begg – age 37 – Leading Stoker (282446) H.M.S. Hogue, Royal Navy.
Alexander joined the navy in April 1896 and served as a stoker and leading stoker in various ships until he was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve at the end of his term of service. In 1911, newly married, he was a porter with the North British Railway Company at Berwick-on-Tweed. He was mobilised as (RFR/PO/B/2583) and posted to the “Hogue” in August 1914 but the cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy were torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U9 while on patrol off the Hook of Holland.
Born 1879 in North Berwick. Son of John and Janet (Dickson) Begg of Leith, Edinburgh. Husband of Elizabeth (Devine) Begg of 12 Victoria Building, Piers Hill, Edinburgh who he married in 1911 in Berwick-on-Tweed .
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 22 September 1914 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Edinburgh Waverley Station.

William Bolton Blair – age 27 – Sapper (166540) 225th Field Company, Royal Engineers.
William was a joiner living with his mother in North Berwick when he enlisted in January 1916. He was mobilised in April and went to France in December. He joined his Company in January 1917, was wounded in September and was killed a month later.
Born 1890 in North Berwick. Son of the late George Blair (died 1897) and of Agnes (Sheriff) Blair of 45 Westgate, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 15 October 1917 and buried Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the North Berwick High School memorial.


T. BROWN. PTE
Thomas Brown – age 18 – Private (3606) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Thomas landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915. He survived the battle of Loos in September but he was killed near there six months later.
Born 1897 in North Berwick. Son of Thomas and Janet (Inglis) Brown of 32 Harbour Terrace, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 1 March 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick.


N. BUNYAN. PTE
Nicol Bunyan – age 38 – Private (183664) 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Nicol and his new wife Mary Slicer emigrated to Alberta, Canada in July 1908. He was working as a clerk when he enlisted in the 89th Battalion in Calgary, Alberta in November 1915 and he sailed with his battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 1916. Nicol was posted to the 31st Battalion in France in August but he was killed a month later.
Born 1878 in Edinburgh. Son of the late James Bunyan (died 1897) and of Helen (Mowbray) Bunyan of 13 Dean Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Mary (Slicer) Bunyan of Langdon, Alberta who he married in 1908 in Islington, London. Mary Slicer was born in 1886 and her birth was registered in Whitekirk and in North Berwick where her family continued to live into the 1920's.
Killed in Action on 27 September 1916 and buried in Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, France.

Duncan was an engineer in Edinburgh when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915.
Born 1895 in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire. Son of John and Isabella (McLeod) Campbell of Bradbuy's Private Hotel, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 11 May 1915 and buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Andrews Blackadder Church memorial in North Berwick and on the North Berwick High School memorial.

James Carnaghan – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 12th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
In 1911 James was a law apprentice living with his grandparents James and Catherine Carnaghan in North Berwick. He became a Student of Law at Edinburgh University in 1912 and enlisted in the 15th Royal Scots in October 1914. He was commissioned in the Cameronians in August 1915 and joined the 2nd Battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1889 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. Son of William Niven Carnaghan and Elizabeth (Campbell) Carmaghan. Grandson of James and Catherine Milligan (Niven) Carnaghan of Linda Vista, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the North Berwick High School memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.

Robert Combe – age 37 – Gunner (322670) 1 Siege Artillery Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Robert, a fishmonger, died of heart disease at his home at 8 Clifford Road, North Berwick.
Born 1882 in Dunbar, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian as Robert Watt Combe.
Son of the late George Combe (died 1911) and Euphemia (Cowe) Combe (died 1903) of North Berwick. Husband of Agnes (Goodall) Combe who he married in 1911 in Edinburgh.
Died on 9 February 1920 and buried in North Berwick Cemetery. (CWG)

James Fleming Cree – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, Special Reserve attached to the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
James enlisted as Private (29507) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in September 1916 and was posted to the 7th/8th Battalion in France from December 1916 to April 1917. He was commissioned in January 1918 and joined his battalion in France.
Born 1895 in New Mexico, USA. Son of James Edward Cree and of Eliza Mabel (Fleming) Cree of Tusculum, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 3 September 1918 and buried in Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


J.R. HAMILTON-DALRYMPLE. LT
John Raphael Hamilton-Dalrymple – age 25 – Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was commissioned from the Royal Military College at Sandhurst in September 1909 and was ADC to the Governor and C-in-C of the Gold Coast Colony from December 1912 until April 1914. He was promoted in May 1913. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in August 1914 and fought at Mons, the Marne and the Aisne. He was wounded at Bethune and evacuated home in October, returning to the battalion in December. John was killed near Pilkem.
Born 1889 in North Berwick as John Hamilton Dalrymple. Son of Sir Walter Layard Hamilton-Dalrymple, 8th Bart. of North Berwick and of Dowager Lady Hamilton-Dalrymple (Alice Mary Clifford).
Missing in Action on 23 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


W.W. DENHOLM. CPL
William Whitelaw Denholm – age 21 – Corporal (1322) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1895 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of George Lamb Denholm and of Catherine (McLeod) Denholm of High Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

George Dickson – age 19 – Private (11295) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots
George was a golf course caddy when he enlisted in November 1912. He was posted to the 2nd Royal Scots in February 1913 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne on 11 August 1914. Many records show that George was killed during the battle at Le Cateau on 26 August and that he was buried by the Germans in Audencourt Military Cemetery. However he was re-interred in Caudry in November 1924 and his official date of death became November 1914.
Born 1895 in North Berwick as George Aitken Dickson. Son of the late William Dickson (died 1910) and of Christina (Aitken) Dickson of 13 Melbourne Place, North Berwick.
Killed in Action on 24 November 1914 and buried in Caudry British Cemetery, France

Harry Logan Dickson – age 19 – Private (1025) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Harry was a member of the Territorial 8th Royal Scots and he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1897 in North Berwick as Henry. Son of William and Helen (Logan) Dickson of 87 High Street, North Berwick.
Died of Wounds on 24 July 1916 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Robert Douglas – age 39 – Private (1150) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a painter to trade. He enlisted at Haddington in East Lothian in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born 1876 in Galashiels. [Ladhope, Roxburghshire] Son of the late Daniel Douglas (died1883) and Margaret or Peggy (Ingles) Douglas of Market Street, Galashiels. Husband of Christina Fox (Henderson) Douglas of Kendall Cottage, 14 Victoria Road, North Berwick who he married in 1897 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

John was educated at Dunfermline High School before becoming a Student of the Arts at Edinburgh University in 1908. He graduated M.A. in 1911 and became a teacher at North Berwick School. He enlisted in August 1915 and joined his battalion in France in 1916.
Born 1890 Partick, Glasgow as John Mitchell Findlay. Son of the late David Gordon Findlay (died 1892) and of Agnes Smith (Quinney) Findlay, and step-son of William Dow of Battery Road, North Queensferry, Fife who married in 1893 in Inverkeithing, Fife.
Killed in Action on 29 April 1916 and buried in St. Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick, on the North Queensferry War Memorial, on the Inverkeithing War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.

Born 1894 in North Berwick. Son of George and Catherine Ann (Weir) Durie of 21 Victoria Road, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 27 August 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.

Alexander Crum Ewing – age 18 – Second Lieutenant, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders attached to the 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alexander was a student and Cadet at Eton College when he was commissioned in September 1914. He joined the 1st Cameron Highlanders in France in November but he was killed a month later.
Born 1896 in London. Son of Humphrey Ewing Crum Ewing and of Eva Constance (Hamilton) Crum Ewing of Strathleven House, Dunbartonshire, of Ashurst Lodge, Lyndhurst, Hampshire and of 22 Balfour Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 22 December 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

J. FENDER. L.CPL
John Fender – age 20 – Lance Corporal (325548) 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John enlisted as Private (1862) in the Royal Scots.
Born 1898 in North Berwick. Son John and Jane Craig (Fairbairn) Fender of 32 High Street, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 11 August 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.


J. FOSTER. L.CPL
James Foster – age 22 – Lance Corporal (325439) 2/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
James enlisted as Private (1594) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in December 1914. His battalion moved to Essex in March 1916, going on to Dublin in January 1917. James contracted influenza and died of inflammation of the brain in the King George V Military Hospital in Dublin.
Born 1894 in North Berwick. Son of the late Robert Foster (died 1902) and of Elizabeth (Taylor) Foster of 2 Harmony Place, North Berwick.
Died on Service on 10 May 1917 and buried in North Berwick Old Churchyard. (CWG)


J. FRASER. STR
James Fraser – age 23 – Stoker 1st Class (SS/109383) H.M.S. Doon. Royal Navy.
James was a golf caddie when he joined the navy in October 1909. He joined the destroyer “Doon” in August 1914 and was on patrol with three other destroyers off Hartlepool during the German Raid on the town. She was damaged by German shellfire and three of the crew were killed.
Born 1891 in North Berwick. Son of the late Margaret Fraser (died 1912)
Brother of George Fraser of 26 Victoria Road, North Berwick.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 16 December 1914 and named on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.


A.D. FULTON. PTE
Andrew Denholm Fulton – age 27 – Private (31166) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Andrew was a golf green-keeper in Haddington when he married in January 1914.
Born 1890 in North Berwick. Son of the late Robert Fulton (died 1904) and of Elizabeth (Ramage) Fulton. Husband of Isabella Jack (Gow) Fulton who he married in 1914 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Abbey Church memorial in North Berwick.
