Johnstone - Renfrew District
UKNIWM Ref no. 44700

The Johnstone war memorial stands in the centre of Houston Square in the middle of town and is a tall grey granite pedestal standing on a raised granite plinth and supporting the bronze sculpture of a scottish infantryman by Glasgow sculptor Kellock Brown. The pedestal is decorated with bronze panels listing battle honours and the commemoration:
IN HONOUR
OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT
AND
IN MEMORY
OF THOSE
WHO FELL
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 1918

AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR
1939 - 1945

What I recorded for the UKNIWM -

The memorial is situated on Houston Square, Main Street, Johnstone.

Parish - Paisley
District – Renfrew
County - Strathclyde

Grid Ref NS427632

The memorial is a grey stone stepped, square section base/plinth, with a square section pedestal block above it and a bronze statue of a soldier above this. There are three low stone steps to the base/plinth. The main pedestal block is dressed stone blocks in six or eight courses. The pedestal block has several brass plaques fixed to it. The Dedication Inscriptions for WW1 and WW2 are on the same face as the soldier faces. On the faces on either side of this are inverted triangular brass plaques bearing the countries or place names of WW1 battles. On the rear face of the block is a brass plaque bearing a coat of arms surrounded by thistles and surmounted by a lion rampant. I assume this coat of arms is the burgh shield. The approximate height of the stone monument is 5m and the lowest step is about 4 or 5m by 4 or 5m. The brass statue of the soldier is a kilted highland soldier in full pack and wearing a Tam ‘o’ Shanter beret. He appears to be striding forward purposefully. He carries a rifle in his right hand with the butt resting on top of the block. The soldier is some 2 ½m high. He looks just over lifesize. Houston Square is in the centre of the town of Johnstone and the memorial is set in a wide cobbled and slabbed area with a bandstand some 30 or 40m away.

WW1
Pte. Andrew Hamilton

Probably the correct man below. His date of death and regiment fit the time of the fighting for Hill 60 when the K.O.S.B. arrived in support. No other A. Hamilton's of the K.O.S.B. died before this date either.

(Glasgow Herald 4th May 1915)
"Private A. Hamilton, 3rd (?) K.O.S.B., has been killed at Hill 60. Private Hamilton was a reservist, and proceeded to France in October last. Deceased leaves a wife and child. He resided at 69 High Street, Johnstone."
