I can't find anything at all on the usual sites for Daniel Holmes, so the following are the details which I have found:

Commemorated:
Bonnybridge Civic Memorial
St. Helen’s Church Memorial (Parishioners)

Falkirk Herald, 20th November 1915. ‘Bonnybridge’
The news that Sergeant Daniel Holmes had fallen to a German sniper was received with the deepest sorrow. Dan, who was well known in the district, was one of the first to don the khaki on the outbreak of war. He only crossed to France towards the beginning of last month having been engaged as a drill instructor during the past year, a position he might have retained had he so desired. Keen at having a slap at the Huns, however, he expressed his wish to be sent to the firing line.

Glasgow Evening Times, 24th November 1915
Mrs. Holmes, Hall House, Bonnybridge, has received intimation that her husband, Sergeant Daniel Holmes, 10th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has been killed. Private Patrick Gorrie of the same battalion, writing to a friend in Bonnybridge, says: “I have sad news for you. Danny Holmes was killed this morning by a sniper. He was shot through the stomach and only lived for five minutes afterwards”. Sergeant Holmes, who was 36 years of age, enlisted on the outbreak of the war. A clay miner to trade, he was previous to his enlistment in the employment of Messrs. James Dougall and Sons (Limited), Bonnyside Brickworks, Bonnybridge. He leaves a widow and four young children.

Falkirk Herald, 27th November 1915.‘How Sergeant Holmes was Killed’
This week Mrs Holmes, Hall House, Bonnybridge, whose husband Sergeant Daniel Holmes, 10th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, as we reported in last week’s issue, was killed while in the trenches in Flanders, has this week been the recipient of a kindly sympathetic letter from Mr. Wm. Orr, Bannockburn, in which detail are given on how Sergeant Holmes met his death. Mr Orr writes: “Dear Mrs Holmes – I hope you will excuse my taking the liberty of writing to sympathise with you in your recent sad bereavement, but our own bereavement is so closely connected with yours that we feel deeply for you, although we are strangers. My son, Private M. Orr, who was a stretcher-bearer in your husband’s company volunteered to go out and bring him in. While doing so he was shot by the same sniper who shot your husband. We had a letter from one of my son’s chums giving us these particulars, and informing us that it happened on Sunday 4th November at 10 o’clock. We expected our son home shortly and I have no doubt you would also be expecting your husband, as they were all getting furlough in turn. Our great consolation is that they both died honourable and noble deaths, fighting for us. Greater love hath no man than that he layeth down his life for a friend.”

Falkirk Herald, 4th December 1915.
Sergeant Daniel Holmes (Bonnybridge), 10th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Killed in Action.

Falkirk Herald, 18th November 1916. ‘In Memoriam’
Holmes. In loving memory of my dear husband, Sergeant Daniel Holmes, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, who was killed by a sniper, November 14th, 1915. Inserted by his sorrowing widow and family, Old Hall, Bonnybridge.

(Possibly) Listed on Bonnybridge Masonic Lodge Dolphin No. 911 Roll of Honour (no details)

1901 Census, living at Broomhill Place, Bonnybridge
Father Robert Holmes, age 35, Moulder, born Ireland
Mother Agnes Holmes, age 34, born Falkirk
Daniel Holmes, age 12, Scholar, born Falkirk
Sisters Janet Holmes, age 9, Scholar, born Falkirk
Mary Holmes, age 7, Scholar, born Falkirk
Brother William Holmes, age 1, born Falkirk

1911 Census, living at Broomhill Place, Bonnybridge
Father Robert Holmes, age 45, Moulder in Ironfoundry, born Ireland
Mother Agnes Holmes, age 44, born Bonnybridge
Children: Daniel Holmes, age 22, Moulder in Ironfoundry, born Bonnybridge
Janet Holmes, age 19, Shop Assistant, born Bonnybridge
Mary Holmes, age 17, Brickworker, born Bonnybridge
William Holmes, age 11, born Bonnybridge

Marriage: At the Manse, Dennyloanhead, District of Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire on 9th June 1911
Daniel Holmes, age 22, Iron Moulder, residing at Broomhill, Bonnybridge
Son of Robert Holmes, Foundry Labourer and Agnes Holmes nee Docherty
Margaret Gillespie, age 20, Typist, residing at Bonnyside Cottages, Bonnybridge
Daughter of David Gillespie, Brickwork Foreman and Elizabeth Gillespie nee Christie
Witnesses: William Russell & Mary Gillespie

The above articles all lead it being the same man, but from another newspaper article concerning the deaths of two children, I discovered something a bit odd ......

Falkirk Herald, 7th April 1917. ‘In Memoriam’
Holmes – In loving memory of wee Clark, died 28th January 1913 and Daniel David (wee Davie), who died 8th April 1916, at Temperance Hall, Bonnybridge, beloved sons of Lillian and the late Sergeant Daniel Holmes.

I downloaded the Death Certificate of Clark Holmes and it lists his mother as Lilian May Holmes nee Hornsby. He died at Temperance Hall, Bonnybridge aged 5 months on 28th January 1913.

Could there be another 'late' Sergeant Daniel Holmes? (There actually IS another Daniel Holmes listed on Bonnybridge Civic Memorial, but he was in the RFA and I've found all his records!

Help!

Soldiers died and Soldiers Effects list him as Daniel Hulme.

Soldiers Effects has his wife listed as Lilian.

Update 2

SNWM and Service Returns states David Hulme. Age on SR is 35.

Update 3

Shocked

Deary me Mark - how did you find that?

I've been trying to figure him out for ages and just could NOT get my head round it at all. I must go back to the beginning - obviously I wasn't seeing the woods for the trees.

It must have been very fashionable to call a son Daniel Holmes in Bonnybridge as there's umpteen of them with only a year or so between them all.

THANK YOU!!!!!

David Hulme turns into Daniel Holmes!

I've seen a good few spelling idiosyncracies but never one that random.

How did you go about finding him Mark?

Morning Anne Very Happy

His service file as David Hulme 2273 exists and at one point contains
"Sgt D Hulme (Alias Daniel Holmes)" and there is a hand written will naming Lilian May Hulme or Holmes Old Temperance Hall, Bonnybridge as his wife.
His children are Daniel b.1905, Richard b.1907, Alfred Henry David Leslie b.1910 and Daniel David (Holmes) b.7/2/1915 - all born in Bonnybridge.
So looks like the name change happened between 1910 and 1915.

Morning Ken!

Thanks for that.

Now that I can stop tearing my hair out over him, I'll be able to get a better picture.

I never though about looking for Mungo Orr though!

Hi Anne,

I simply searched Soldiers Died and Date of Death. This will throw up the various options to browse on.

I part of his service file survives - excellent.
