I have placed the names in alphabetical order rather than in the date order of the memorial.

CPL. WM. ANDERSON, CAM HIGHRS. FRANCE 1917.
William Anderson – age 24 – Corporal (S/13625) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
William was a gamekeeper on the Castlemilk Estate at Corrie Lodge, Lockerbie when he enlisted in Dumfries in September 1914. He had been a member of the Territorial 4th Cameron Highlanders when he lived in Inverness-shire. He was posted to the 6th Battalion and landed with them at Boulogne in July 1915. He was promoted to Corporal in September 1916.
Born 1893 in Laggan, Kingussie, Inverness-shire. Son of James and Annie Anderson of Balgown, Laggan, Kingussie.
Killed in Action on 4 April 1917 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Laggan War Memorial in Badenoch & Strathspey, Inverness-shire.


L/CPL. ARCH. ARMSTRONG, K.O.S.B. DROWNED 1915.
Archibald Armstrong – age 24 – Lance Corporal (14828) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archie was a sawyer when he enlisted in September 1914 but he was drowned in the Aegean sea when the troopship Royal Edward was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB14. Of the about 900 casualties, some 60 were from the 9th (Reserve) Battalion, KOSB as replacements for losses in the 1st Battalion.
Born 1890 in Tundergarth, Dumfriesshire. Son of Francis and Isabella (Buck) Armstrong of Cowburn and of Scroggs Cottage, Lockerbie.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 13 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


SPR. DAVID BELL, ROYAL ENGRS, SCOTLAND 1920.
David Bell – age 30 – Sapper (32647) Royal Engineers, Wireless Training Centre.
David enlisted as Private (10416) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in June 1909 and in 1911, aged 20, he was serving with 1st KOSB in India. The battalion arrived back in England in December 1914 and then landed at Gallipoli in April 1915. At some point David transferred to the Royal Engineers but he was discharged from the army due to illness in June 1916 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (657000). David died of tuberculosis at home in Boreland Cottage.
Born 1890 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Janet (Irving) Bell of Boreland Cottage, Hutton, Lockerbie.
Died on 6 October 1920 and buried in Hutton Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Trinity Church Memorial in Lockerbie as Wireless Operator.

PTE. GEORGE BELL, CAM HIGHRS. FRANCE 1917.
George Bell – age 21 – Private (S/22474) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a joiner living in Church Street when he enlisted as Private (1232) in the Territorial 5th KOSB in Moffat in March 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 but transferred to the 2/5th Reserve Battalion in December. He was transferred again to the 12th Scottish Provisional Battalion in June 1915. He was discharged from the KOSB in March 1916 and re-enlisted into the Camerons under the terms of the Military Services Act, 1916.
Born 1896 in Hutton & Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Park Bell and of Margaret (Armstrong) of Carterton Cottage, Hutton and of Callister Hall, Waterbeck, Lockerbie.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT BELL, K.O.S.B. GALLIPOLI 1915.
Robert Bell – age 21 – Private (18972) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a ploughman at Dryfeholm when he enlisted as Private (9304) in the Highland Light Infantry in September 1914 in HLI. He was transferred to 1st KOSB and joined them at Gallipoli in May 1915. Two months later he was killed.
Born 1893 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Janet (Irving) Bell of Boreland Cottage, Hutton, Lockerbie.
Missing in Action on 1 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallioili, Turkey.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Trinity Church memorial in Lockerbie.


PTE. WM. J. BELL, K.O.S.B. SCOTLAND 1918.
William John Bell – age 25 – Private (5168) 5th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Stobahill Farm near Lockerbie when he enlisted on 31 January 1916 but due to illness he was discharged from the army on 18 December 1916 and was awarded a Silver War Badge (489823) It appears that he suffered a sever head wound from a bomb (grenade) during his training. He died of gastric cattarrh at the family home of Little Millriggs.
Born 1892 in Hutton and Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Taylor) Bell of Little Millriggs, Boreland, Hutton and Corrie.
Died on 4 August 1918 and buried in Hutton Parish Churchyard, Dumfriesshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Hoddom Parish War Memorial in Ecclefechan and on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

CPL. RICHD. COMMON, M.M., SCOT. RIFLES. FRANCE 1918.
Richard Common, Miltary Medal – age 26 – Corporal (25879) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Richard was a ploughman on his father's farm when he enlisted as Private (126242) in the Royal Field Artillery in 1916. He was posted to the Cameronians and was awarded a MM as 25879 L/C. R. Common, Sco. Rif. (Lockerbie) “for gallantry and devotion to duty east of Ypres in August 1917”.
His body was buried by the Germans and was re-interred in Muille-Villette in July 1919.
Born 1892 in Hutton & Corrie. Son of Walter and Elizabeth Helen (Halliday) Common of Meikle Whitriggs, Hutton, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 27 March 1918 and buried in Ham British Cemetery, Muille-Villette, Somme, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


L/CPL. ROBT. CUMMING, CANADIANS. FRANCE 1917.
Robert Cumming – age 33 – Private (737033) 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Robert, aged 17, was a ploughman at Gillesbie Farm in Hutton when he enlisted as Trooper (5401) in the 2nd Dragoon Guards in 1901, for 9 months. He was a street-car motorman in Calgary, Alberta when he enlisted there in May 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in September 1916 and was posted to the 16th Battalion in France in November 1916. Robert died of his wounds in the Canadian Corps Main Dressing Station.
Born 1884 at Boreland, Hutton & Corrie. Son of Janet Cumming and grandson of Robert Gordon and Jane Cumming of Dinwoodie, Lockerbie.

Husband of Annie Cumming of 2421, 24A Street, Glengarry, Calgary, Alberta.
Died of Wounds on 9 April 1917 and buried in Quatre-Vents Military Cemetery, Estree-Cauchy, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. ANDW. DALGLEISH, H.L.I. FRANCE 1918.
Most (but not all) records spell his name as Dalgliesh.
Andrew Dalgliesh – age 19 – Private (41651) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew enlisted in Glasgow and was posted as Private (45790) to the 2nd Highland Light Infantry in France before he was transferred to the KOSB.
Born 1899 in Hutton & Corrie. Son of William and Margaret Magdalene (Cowan) Dalgliesh of Berryscawr, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 18 August 1918 and buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial as Dalgliesh.

PTE. JOHN B. EDGAR, LOND. REGT. FRANCE 1915.
John Bell Edgar – age 21 – Private (3175) 1/13th Kensington Battalion, London Regiment.
After attending Dumfries Academy John had become a civil servant in London. He was living in Kensington when he enlisted in September 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in February 1915.
Born 1894 in Hutton. Son of James Bell Edgar (Schoolmaster) and Barbara Bell Edgar of Boreland Schoolhouse, Hutton, of Dryfe View, Lockerbie and of 19 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial in Lockerbie and on the Dumfries Academy War Memorial.


PTE. WM. GIBSON, H.L.I. FRANCE 1918.
William Brown Gibson – age 40 – Private (45484) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William had worked with Mr. Charteris, Clothier, in Lockerbie. As Private (35635) Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was posted to the “M” Scottish Base Depot in France before being transferred to the HLI.
Born 1878 at Corriebridge, Hutton & Corrie. Son of William and Helen (Bell) Gibson of Corriebridge, Lockerbie. Husband of Isabel (Gibson) Gibson of 110 East Claremont Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1916 in Leith.
Killed in Action on 28 September 1918 and buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


L/CPL. WM. HARKNESS, BLACK WATCH. SALONICA 1916.
William Harkness – age 33 – Lance Corporal (S/7866) 10th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was a gamekeeper when he enlisted in January 1915. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September but they were withdrawn and sent to Salonica in northern Greece in November 1915.
Born 1883 in Lamington, Lanarkshire. Son of William and Isabella (Kerr) Harkness of Hutton.
Missing in Action on 16 October 1916 and named on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

George Johnstone – age 24 – Private (23286) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1894 in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire. Son of George and Isabella (Walker) Johnstone, of Blindhillbush, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 30 June 1918 and buried in Tannay British Cemetery, Thiennes, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. ROBERT KENNEDY, K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1915.
Thought to be:
Robert Kennedy – age 20 – Private (17955) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined his battalion at Gallipoli on 18 July 1915. Less than a month later he was reported as missing.
Born 1895 in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire.
(Source:1901 census and GRoS – Birth Register. SDGW has born Corrie and resident in Lochmaben)
Son of John and Nicholas (Bell) Kennedy of Dinwoodie Mains Cottage, Applegarth.
(Most of the family were still in Applegarth in 1911 but by 1915 his brother James and sister Mary Jane were in Lochmaben and their parents, John and Nicholas, died there in 1942.)
Missing in Action on 11 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


CPL. ALEX. LAURIE, K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1918.
Alexander Laurie – age 22 – Lance Corporal (1897 & 240515) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander joined his battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine before moving to France in April 1918. In August 1918 the battalion fought as part of the French 10th Army at the battle of the Marne and Alexander died on his wounds in the 63rd Casualty Clearing Station at Senlis.
Born 1896 in Hutton & Corrie. Son of William and Jane (Wallace) Laurie of Nether Hutton and of Balgray Hill, Lockerbie.
Died of Wounds on 2 August 1918 and buried in Senlis French National Cemetery, Oise, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

John Edgar Linton – age 21 – Private (S/17249) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a gamekeeper on the Corrie Estate of Sir Robert Jardine of Castlemilk, St Mungo when he enlisted in February 1915. He joined his battalion in France on 27 May and was killed a month later.
Born 1894 Colmonell, Ayrshire. Son of John and Catherine McGowan (Seaton) Linton of Gibson's Hill, Tundergarth, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1915 and buried in Chapelle-d'Armentiers Old Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Tundergarth Parish War Memorial and on the St. Mungo Parish War Memorial in the parish church in Kettleholm village.


GNR. ARTHUR P. MOFFAT, R.F.A. FRANCE 1918.
Arthur Peter Moffat – age 21 – Gunner (126156) 34th Division Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery.
Born 1897 in Hutton & Corrie. Son of the late John and Elizabeth Moffat of Hutton.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

Died on Service on 8 April 1919 and buried in the Hutton Parish Churchyard. (CWG)

John Renwick MacArthur – age 31 – Private (17944) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a gamekeeper with the Duke of Buccleuch when he enlisted in April 1915. He sailed from Liverpool in August 1916 and joined his Battalion's machine gun section in Salonica on 3 September but was killed a month later.
Born 1885 in Hutton & Corrie. Son of William and Jane Macarthur, of Dryfe Lodge, Boreland, Lockerbie. Husband of Mary Ellen (Crawford) Macarthur of Laught, Blacknest and of High Fardingbank, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action between 1 & 2 October 1916 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Morton Parish War Memorial in Thornhill.


L/CPL. PETER McROBERT, K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1917.
Peter McRobert – age 22 – Lance Corporal (23695) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Peter was a shepherd at Potburn, Ettrick, Selkirkshire when he enlisted in May 1916. He joined the 7th/8th KOSB in France in September 1916.
Born 1895 in Tundergarth, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Jane (Armstrong) McRobert of White Knowe, Hutton and of Cowburn Cottage, Corrie.
Killed in Action on 16 December 1917 and buried in Heudicourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Eskdalemuir War Memorial and on the Ettrick Parish War Memorial.


CPL. D. ROBSON, K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1918.
Thought to be:
David Robertson – age 23 – Corporal (23850) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a shepherd at Penlaw Farm, Corrie, Lockerbie when he enlisted. He joined the 1st KOSB in France in early 1916 and had been wounded twice. He was posted to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1894 at Stockerton Farm, Kirkcudbright. Son of Robert and Bessie Robertson of Middlegill Cottage, Moffat, of Craigielands Lodge, Beattock, Dumfriesshire and latterly of Eglinton Mains, Irvine, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial as Cpl. David Robson KOSB and on the Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish War Memorial in Beattock as Pte. David Robertson, KOSB together with his brother James Robertson – age 23 – Private (20225) 1st Battalion, KOSB who died on 22 November 1915 at Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JACOB SCOTT, H.L.I. GERMANY 1918.
Jacob Scott – age 39 – Private (39219) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Jacob was a stone mason. He was captured in late March 1918 and sent a postcard to his wife in April to say that he was a prisoner of war. He died in the Military Hospital in Julich, to the west of Cologne, and was buried there but was re-interred in Cologne after the war.
Born 1879 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Elizabeth (Given) Scott and of John Scott. Husband of Agnes (Dunkeld) Scott of High Farthingbank, Thornhill and of 13 Victoria Park, Lockerbie who he married in 1910 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Service on 13 October 1918 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN SIM, CAM.HIGHRS. FRANCE 1916.
John Sim – age 23 – Lance Corporal (S/18631) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a farm servant and ploughman when he enlisted as Private (17502) in the 12th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry in September 1914 but he was discharged due to defective vision a month later. He enlisted again in June 1915 and joined the 5th Camerons in France in October 1915.
Born 1893 Dryfesdale. (indexed as John Harries Sime)
Son of William Harris Sim and Helen (Burgess) Sim of Roberthill Farm, Lockerbie.
Missing in Action on 18 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial.


PTE. JAMES WARD, K.O.S.B. FRANCE 1918.
James Davidson Ward – age 24– Private (44156) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted as Private (1474) in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1916 and joined the 7th/8th KOSB in France in December 1916 before transferring to the 6th KOSB.

Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Lochmaben Parish War Memorial.
