Originally enlisted for 1 year in the K.O.S.B. (Service Nr. 6982, "G" Coy. 3V.B. King's Own Scottish Borderers, Drill Hall, Dumfries, 18th January, 1900) for the South African War. Promoted Sergeant on enlistment.
Painter to trade; 26 3/12 years of age; unmarried; born Moffat.
N/K:- James Cuthbertson, Father, Buccleuch Street, Moffat. (Shoe/ Bootmaker.)
Discharged from service early (29th November, 1900) due to regulations governing the demobilization of the South African Field Force.
Some K.O.S.B. service records exist.

I've just noticed that there are three names inscribed on the edge of the circular panels at the base of the memorial.
I think they are:

David White – age 32 – Corporal (7298) 64th Army Brigade Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery.
David had been a coachman at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel in Moffat before being employed at the Castlemilk hunting stables in St. Mungo, Dumfriesshire. He had been at the front since June 1915.
Born 1885 in Johnstone, Dumfriesshire. Son of William White of St. Ann's, Raehills, Johnstonebridge (formerly forester on the Annadale Estate at Moffat) and of Margaret (Rogerson) White of Upper Murthat Cottage, Beattock, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 19 October 1917 and buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Mungo War Memorial in the Parish church in Kettleholm, on the Lockerbie War Memorial (as Driver) and on the Johnstone Parish War Memorial (as Bdr. Bombardier)

James Robertson – age 23 – Private (20225) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915.
Born 1892 at Stockerton Farm, Kirkcudbright. Son of Robert and Bessie Robertson Middlegill Cottage, Moffat, of Craigielands Lodge, Beattock, Dumfriesshire and latterly of Eglinton Mains, Irvine, Ayrshire.
Died of Wounds on 22 November 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Also named on the Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish War Memorial in Beattock together with his brother David, Corporal (23850) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, who was killed on 24 March 1918.

Thomas Adamson – age 29 – Gunner (166250) 465th Battery, 65th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Born 1888 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of Wallace and Mary (Varrie) Adamson of Moffat. Husband of Annie (White) Adamson who he married in 1912 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action ON 1 January 1918 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-le-Grand, Somme, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial, on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial in Lockerbie.

John was a shepherd at Capplegill Farm, Moffat when he enlisted in June 1916. He joined his battalion in France in November 1916.
Born 1896 in Moffat. Son of George and Janet (Halliday) Aitken of Archbank, Moffat and of Henderson Street, Moffat.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.


ANDERSON, PTE. A. CAMERON HRS.
Andrew Thorburn Anderson – age 18 – Private (S/15599) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Andrew was a farm servant when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 10 March 1915 but died just two months later in the 20th Field Ambulance. He was buried in Vieille Chapelle Old Military Cemetery but was re-interred at Souchez in November 1923.
Born 1896 in Moffat. Son of John and Ellen (Thorburn) Anderson of Lochan Cottage, Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 9 May 1915 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

ANDERSON, PTE. J. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
John Anderson – age 30 – Private (13834) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been widowed in 1910 and lived in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire with his children. He had been a chauffeur at Comlongon Castle for 9 years when he enlisted. He landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1886 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Janet Anderson of 10 High Street, Moffat.
John Anderson senior was a stud groom and 1891 the family were at Ancrum, Roxburghshire and, by 1901, had moved to Moffat.
John's wife, the late Mary (Jackson) Anderson, died in 1910 in Clarencefield, Ruthwell.
Killed in Action on 7 June 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Ruthwell Parish War Memorial.

James Beattie – age 25 – Private (23445) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a gardener at Dumcrieff House, Moffat when he enlisted.
Born 1890 in Moffat as James Richardson Beattie. Son of James Armstrong Beattie and of Janet (Scott) Beattie of Craigbeck Cottage and of Crofthead Cottage, Moffat.
Killed in Action on 3 September 1916 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.


BELL, PTE. G. CAMERON HRS.
George Bell – age 21 – Private (S/22474) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a joiner living in Church Street, Moffat when he enlisted as Private (1232) in the Territorial 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers in March 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 but transferred to the 2/5th Reserve Battalion in December. He was transferred again to the 12th Scottish Provisional Battalion in June 1915. He was discharged from the KOSB in March 1916 and re-enlisted into the Camerons under the terms of the Military Services Act, 1916.
Born 1896 in Hutton & Corrie Parish, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Park Bell and of Margaret (Armstrong) of Carterton Cottage, Hutton and of Callister Hall, Waterbeck, Lockerbie.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Hutton & Corrie Parish War Memorial in Boreland, on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial, on the Eaglesfield District War Memorial, on the Springkell Estate Workers memorial at the former Kirkconnel Church near Eaglesfield and on the Waterbeck Church memorial.

BLAYLOCK, PTE. A.H. A. & S. HRS.
Andrew Hogg Blaylock – age 26 – Private (S/18211) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Andrew was a labourer in Craigielands Village, Beattock, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in November 1916. He was posted to his battalion in France in February 1917.
Born 1891 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Janet (Hogg) Blaylock, of Craigielands Village, Beattock. Husband of Helen (Davidson) Blaylock [later Mrs Andrew Cuthbertson] of 19 George Street and of 2 Charlotte Street, Langholm, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1915 in Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Langholm War Memorial.


BORROWMAN. LIEUT. J. R.F.C.
John James Borrowman – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 22nd Squadron, Royal Air Force.
John had been manager of a creamery in Johannesburg, South Africa and was living at Standerton in the Transvaal when he enlisted in 1916. He served in the East African campaign as infantry man before he volunteered to serve in France. He came to the UK and was commissioned in the Royal Flying Corps in July 1917. He joined his squadron in France in June 1918 and was wounded on 10 August but managed to land behind British lines and was able to rejoin his squadron on 22 August. John was flying Bristol F2B fighter when he was shot down a week later.
Born 1890 in Moffat. Son of Robert and Jane Ann (Tait) Borrowman, formerly of Oakriggside, Moffat.
Robert was an hotel keeper in Moffat when John James was born and he and Jane Ann had married in 1883 in Liverpool. He was a former Life Guard and became a recruiting Sergeant in Johannesburg.
Brother of David Herbert Borrowman of Lochmaben (born 1886 in West Derby, Liverpool)
Killed in Action on 29 August 1918 and buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Johannesburg Brixton Kingston Frost Park Memorial.

BORTHWICK, SGNR. E.L. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Edward Lawrence Borthwick – age 18 – Private (22320) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Edward was employed by a chemist in Moffat when he enlisted in March 1916. He had only just arrived in France and was attached to 8th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry when he was killed.
Born 1898 in Moffat. Son of James and Annie Halliday (French) Borthwick of Strathview, Moffat.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.


BROWN, LIEUT. W. ROYAL SCOTS.
William Brown – age 29 – Lieutenant, 1/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was educated at Boroughmuir School in Edinburgh and at Edinburgh University from 1908. He graduated M.A. in 1912 and became a teacher at Moffat Academy. He enlisted as Sergeant (654) in the 1/6th Royal Scots in August 1914 and was commissioned in April 1915. He landed with his battalion at Alexandria, Egypt in September 1915 but they moved to France in May 1916 and combined with the 1/5th Royal Scots to form the 5th/6th Battalion.
Born 1889 in Edinburgh. Youngest son of William and Agnes Brown of 12 Devon Place, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 11 August 1918 and buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.


CAMERON, PTE. W. ROYAL SCOTS.
William Cameron – age 27 – Private (20459) 15th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William had been a gardener at Glamis Castle in Perthshire. He enlisted at Forfar in January 1915 and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France in May. He was evacuated to hospital in Newcastle due to illness in March 1916 and returned to France in July. A year later, on 26 August 1917, he was badly wounded and was treated in the 5th Casualty Clearing Station where he had to have a leg amputated. A month later he was moved to the 9th General Hospital at Rouen and then in October 1917 he was evacuated to the University War Hospital, Southampton where he died of septicaemia.
Born 1890 in Moffat as William Fettes Cameron. Son of Ewan and Catherine (Fettes) Cameron 4 Harthope Place, Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 8 February 1918 and buried in Moffat Cemetery. (CWG)

CHESTER, L:CPL. W. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
William Chester – age 36 – Lance Corporal (397 & 240014) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a miner at Gateside Colliery, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire and a long-standing member of the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and Palestine where he was bitten by a “desert dog” while asleep in his tent. He developed blood poisoning and died in hospital at Ramleh.

He claimed to be the son of the late William and the late Ellen (Plummer) Chester. (William's marriage details from GRoS – Marriage Register)
Husband of Ellen Kirk (Burgess) Chester of High Street, Sanquhar who he married in 1913 in Moffat. Son in Law of William Burgess of Dye Mill, Moffat.
Died on Active Service on 14 March 1918 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Sanquhar War Memorial.


CRANSTON, PTE. F. CAMERON HRS.
Frank Cranston – age 26 – Private (7775) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Frank had joined the Camerons about eight years earlier. In August 1914 his battalion was in Poona, India and returned to England in November 1914. They landed at Le Havre in December.
Born 1889 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire as Francis. Son of John Cranston and of Janet Bryson (McCaughie) Cranston of Main Street, Cambuslang and of Annanside, Moffat.
Missing in Action on 10 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.


CUNNINGHAM, MIDN. A.C. ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE.
Andrew Coutts Cunningham – age 19 – Midshipman (3016), H.M.C.M.B. "No. 33A." Royal Naval Reserve.
During the first attempt at the raid at Zeebrugge the Coastal Motor Boat “33A” ran aground off Ostend and drifted ashore. All of the crew of six were lost and only three bodies were recovered.
Born 1898 in Moffat. Son of the late Grace Johnstone (Coutts) Cunningham and of Alexander Cunningham of 31 Well Street, Moffat.
Died on Active Service/Lost at Sea on 12 April 1918 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.

CURRIE, CPL. H.J. ROYAL ENGINEERS.
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM.
Harold James Currie – age 24 – Lance Corporal (24424) Royal Engineers.
Harold joined the Post Office in May 1907 and was a sorter and telegraphist when he joined the Territorial 5th KOSB as Private (490) in March 1909. He was on the staff at Thornhill, Dumfriesshire and was living at 25 North Drumlanrig Street when he enlisted as Sapper (22424) in the postal department of the Royal Engineers in January 1912. He moved to the 6th Signal Company in February 1913 and went to France in September 1914. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1915 but had to be evacuated to the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth, London where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and discharged from the army on 3 June 1915. Harold died in hospital in Chelsea, London in August 1915.
Born 1890 in Helenburgh, Rhu, Dunbartonshire. Son of the late James Cormock Currie (Master Mariner) and of Flora Ann (MacKinnon) Currie of Harthope Place, and of Academy Place, Moffat.
The family moved to Moffat from Helensburgh between 1891 and 1901.
Died in August 1915. Burial place unknown.

CUTHBERTSON, SERGT. A. SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Alexander Cuthbertson – age 40 – Sergeant (533) 1/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Alexander was a painter when he enlisted as Private (6982) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1900 and he served in South Africa from February but was discharged in November 1900 under the terms of the demobilisation of the South African Field Force and he returned to Moffat. By 1911 he had become the caretaker of the Drill Hall in Whamond Street in Motherwell which was the base for “G” & “H” companies of the 6th Cameronians. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in March 1915.
Born 1875 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Margaret (Dinwoodie) Cuthbertson d. 1903 and of James Cuthbertson of Moodkee, Moffat. Husband of Williamina (Barrett) Cuthbertson who he married in 1902 in Moffat. Father of James Cuthbertson, of 73B, Miller St., Motherwell, Lanarkshire.
Killed in Action on 12 October 1915 and buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Motherwell War Memorial.

Samuel Cuthbertson – age 27 – Sergeant (16400) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 Samuel aged 20 was a labourer in a steelworks and was living with his brother Alexander at the Drill Hall in Motherwell together with another brother David aged 22.
Samuel enlisted in the 17th (3rd Glasgow) Battalion but transferred to the 14th HLI.
Born 1891 in Moffat as Samuel Proudfoot Cuthbertson. Son of the late Margaret (Dinwoodie) Cuthbertson and of James Cuthbertson of Moodkee, Moffat.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.

DAVIDSON, L:CPL. A.W. 31st CANADIANS.
Alexander Will Davidson – age 23 – Lance Corporal (79388) 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Alexander was a gardener when he enlisted at Lethbridge, Alberta in November 1914. He sailed from Canada in May 1915 and arrived in France September 1915. Alexander was wounded on 17 November and admitted to the 26th General Hospital at Etaples on 20 November but died a couple of weeks later.
Born 1890 in Laurencefield, Moffat. Son of James and Mary (Will) Davidson of 1 Maxwell Place, Well Road, Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 6 December 1915 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.

DUNLOP, SGT. MAJ. A.H. 4th CAN. MTD. RIFLES.
Arthur Hamilton Dunlop – age 30 – Sergeant Major (158010) 4th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
Arthur worked for the United Collieries, Carron Company before he emigrated to Canada in 1909. He was farming at Hastings, Ontario when he enlisted in the 81st Infantry Battalion at Toronto in September 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1916 and was transferred to the 4th CMR in France in June. He was promoted to Sergeant in the same month and was was wounded in September but was able to rejoin his unit a month later. He was promoted to CSM in April 1917 but was wounded again in six months later and died in the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Poperinghe.
Born 1887 in Govanhill, Gorbals, Glasgow. Son of Arthur Hamilton Dunlop and Annie Bartholomew (Ferguson) Dunlop of Uddingston, Lanarkshire and of "Burnside," Moffat.
Died of Wounds on 27 October 1917 and buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery. Belgium.


DUNN, SAPPR. J. ROYAL ENGINEERS.
James Dunn – age 22 – Sapper (2362) 1st (Lowland) Field Company, Royal Engineers.
James and his Company of the Territorial Force were mobilised in August and joined the 1st Division in Belgium in December 1914.
Born 1894 in Moffat. Son of Alexander (former church officer at St. Mary's, Moffat) and of Mary (Marchbank) Dunn of 43 Corswall Street Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Died of Wounds on 21 July 1916 and buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.


ELLIOT, PTE. J.M. M. G. C.
John MacDonald Elliot – age 22 – Private (48864) 81st Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John enlisted as Private (S/17070) in the 2nd Cameron Highlanders and he joined his battalion in France in May 1915 before moving to Salonika in northern Greece in December. The Brigade's Machine Gun Company was formed in the 27th Division in May 1916. John died of influenza in the 49th Stationary Hospital at Bralo.
Born 1896 in Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (MacDonald) Elliot, of Church Street, Moffat.
Died on Active Service on 10 October 1918 and buried in Bralo British Cemetery, Greece.

FINDLAY, PTE. J. SCOTTISH RIFLES.
John Findlay – age 38 – Private (14819) 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John landed with his battalion at Boulogne in September 1915 but sailed for Salonika in November 1915. He died of disease.
Born 1878 in Liberton, Edinburgh, Midlothian. Son of Charles and Margaret (Hill) Findlay of St. Margaret's Park Lodge, Corstorphine, Edinburgh.
From 1881 the family lived in Moffat where Charles was a gardener. In 1901 John was a groom at the Moffat Hydro.
Died on Active Service on 9 September 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial.


GRAHAM, SGT. J. H. L. I.
John Graham – age 23 – Sergeant (9822) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John was a shepherd when he enlisted and he was well known in the Annan Water district. In 1911 he was a Corporal with the 1st HLI in India and in August 1914 the battalion was in Ambala, India. As part of the Sirhind Brigade in the 3rd (Lahore) Division they moved to France via Egypt, landing at Marseilles on 1 December 1914. Three weeks later John was killed at Festubert.
Born 1891 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire as John James Graham.
Son of John and Nancy or Mary (Dixon) Graham of The Hollies near Moffat.
In 1901 the family were at East Tinwald Stables, Dumfriesshire where his father John was a coachman. Also there were his mother Mary, his brothers Robert W. and Francis H. and his sister Margaret. He named Mary, Robert, Frank and Margaret as his legatees.
Missing in Action on 21 December 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

James Burness Grange – age 27 – Second Lieutenant, 21st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
James was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire (1905) and at the Ontario Agricultural College (1909-1913) He graduated B.Sc. Agriculture from the University of Toronto. He tried to enlist early in the war but was rejected due to poor eyesight. He became an Assistant Inspector at the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries in May 1915 until he gained a commission in November 1916. He went to France in January 1917.
Born 1890 in Moffat. Son of William D'Oyly Grange, M.D. (late Surgeon Major, 3rd Volunteer Battalion, K.O.S.B.) and Lucy (Burness) Grange of Mansfield House, Moffat and of 3 Clarence Drive, Harrogate, Yorkshire.
Killed in Action on 20 April 1918 and buried in Gonnehem British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial, on the Repton School War Memorial and on the University of Toronto Roll of Service.


GRINDALL, PTE. F. KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Frank Grindall – age 27 – Private (7776) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank had spent 9 years in the KOSB as Private (2686) and had served in the South African War. He had worked in the Dalzell Steel Works in Motherwell and he was a parcel delivery van driver in Moffat for the Caledonian Railway Company when he re-enlisted. Frank joined his battalion in France on 17 February 1915 but was killed two months later.
Born 1888 in Moffat. Son of the late Emily (Rae) Grindall and of Robert Grindall of Moffat. Husband of Christina McLean (Green) Grindall, later Mrs Walter Henry Starling, of Gartland Cottage, Moffat and of 76 Range Road, Flemington, who he married in 1912 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial, on the Motherwell War Memorial and on the Dalzell Steelworks memorial in Motherwell

Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

HARKNESS, SGT. MAJ. J.M. H. L. I.
John Mitchell Harkness – age 27 – Company Sergeant Major (13139) 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John had had been employed by George Armstrong, flesher, of Well Street, Moffat before he moved to Glasgow where he lived at 262 Allison Street, Govanhill and where he was employed by the Glasgow Corporation. He enlisted in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1889 in Moffat. Son of John and Catherine (Ross) Harkness of 22 High Street, Moffat and of 13 Govan Drive, Alexandria, Dunbartonshire.
Died of Wounds on 7 December 1916 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Moffat Academy memorial, on the 15th HLI Memorial now in the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Born 1895 in Moffat. Son of John and Catherine (Ross) Harkness of 22 High Street, Moffat and of 13 Govan Drive, Alexandria, Dunbartonshire.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
