James Conway (5964 and 303164) was attested in TF of A&SH in 1912 and embodied on 5/8/1914. He was killed in action on 6/3/1917. I thought he would have been entitled to the 14 or 14/15 star but it doesn't show on his medal card, instead it says he got the TF war medal. His service records survive but there are rips and blotches in crucial places! Is it possible that he was on home service for a while before going overseas? |

Morag - It looks like he landed at Calais on 2 January 1917 and was at the Infantry Base Depot at Etaples the following day. He was posted to the 1/8th Argylls on 20 January. _________________ Ken |

Thanks Ken.
I could make out the bit about being posted to 1/8th on 20 Jan 1917 but where on earth can you see the bit about landing in Calais on 2 Jan and being at Etaples the following day?????
Thank you so much! There's a bit saying he was "somewhere" between 5/8/14 and 31/12/16 - I suppose he must have been on home service then.

Hi Sandra (sorry about mis-naming you )
about half way thro his service file (page 33410) is a listing of his service
"Casualty Form - Active Service"
I should be able to download the page and copy it to here - but I can't
Hopefully some smarty-pants will. _________________ Ken |

Sandra - also The Territorial Force War Medal was a campaign medal awarded to members of the British Territorial Force and Territorial Force Nursing Services who served overseas in World War I; it is the rarest of the five British Great War medals.

Hi again Sandra.
There are a couple of reports in the Stirling Observer (27 & 31 March and 7 April 1917) about his death. In spite of (because of?) him being a miner at Millhall Colliery and a member of the Territorials, he was considered to be unfit for overseas service. However his health improved and he went to France. _________________ Ken |

Wow, thanks again Ken! I have 7 pages of his service papers but I've renamed them all so .....! I don't seem to have the Active Service one, no worries, you've given me the info I was looking for.
I have the Stirling Observer report of 27 March but not the 7 April one; I'll have to look for it.
That is really interesting about the Territorial Force medal. I haven't come across it before. From reading the Wiki article it seems James volunteered for overseas service, was considered unfit for it and then when his health improved was sent abroad. Because he didn't SERVE overseas in 1914-15 he wasn't eligible for the star medal but because he VOLUNTEERED to do so, he got the Territorial Force medal. Have I got that right or am I way off target?
Sandra
PS I sometimes regret signing up with a nom de plume!! |
