VICTOR DILLON, PTE. K.L.
Victor Dillon – age 20 – Private (357875) 1/10th (Scottish) Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
Victor was a footman with a Mr Steele of Lockerbie when he enlisted. (Derbyshire Courier 8/6/1918 p.6)
Born 1897 in Cromford, Bakewell, Derbyshire as Victor James Dillon.
Son of Michael and Rhoda (Chedgey) Dillon of Willersley Lodge, Cromford, Matlock, Derbyshire.
Killed in Action on 1 June 1918 and buried in Houchin British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church and on the Cromford War Memorial.


ROBT. C. DONALDSON, A.I.F.
Robert Coventry Donaldson – age 32 – Private (1661) 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Robert was educated in Edinburgh and became an accountant's clerk before he joined the Rio Tinto Company in London in 1902. He became a farmer in South Africa and then worked in America before settling in Perth, Western Australia. He was keen at rugby and a very good horseman and was working as a linesman when he enlisted in January 1915 Perth. He landed at Gallipoli in May 1915 but was admitted to hospital and rejoined his battalion on 8 July. Three weeks later he was killed.
Born 1882 in Dalton. Son of Rev. Robert Donaldson and of Rosa Emma Donaldson of Dalton Parish Church. Brother of Netta Forest (Donaldson) De Miremont of 42 Cadogan Square, London.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1915 and buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour and on Individual Plaque in the Parish Church.


MURRAY H. DUNBAR, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Murray Hill Dunbar – age 28 – Lance Corporal (14923) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Murray landed with the 7th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1887 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William Dunbar and of Mary Ann (Inglis) Dunbar of Greenfield Cottage, Ruthwell. Brother of Miss Jane R. Dunbar of Greenfield Cottage, Ruthwell.
Missing in action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church and on the Ruthwell Parish War Memorial.

THOS. K. HEDDLESTON, A.S.C.
Note: all records spell his name as Hiddleston.
Thomas Kelly Hiddleston – age 41 – Sapper (WR/312860) 3rd Port Construction Company, Royal Engineers.
Thomas was a quarryman when he enlisted as Sapper (291359) Royal Engineers in May 1916. He went to France in August 1917 but was admitted to the 3rd General Hospital and evacuated to the UK in October 1917. He died in Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital, Whitchurch, Cardiff.
Born 1876 in Dalton as Thomas Kelly Hiddleston. Son of the late Robert and Mary (Kelly) Hiddleston of Sandy Knowe, Dalton.
Husband of Jean Burnie (Johnstone) Hiddleston, of High Street, Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire who he married in June 1917 in Hoddom.
The 1911 census shows Thomas and Jean and their family at High Street, Ecclefechan.
Thomas 34 b. Dalton, Jean B. 36 b. Hutton, Kate 17, Christina 14, William 13, Crissie 11 months all born in Hoddom.

Died on Service on 31 May 1918 and buried in Cardiff (Cathays) Cemetery, Wales.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church (as Hiddleston) and on the Hoddom Parish War Memorial in Ecclefechan as Hiddlestone.


JAMES IVISON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Ivison – age 26 – Private (22767) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James of Threewellbrae, St. Mungo, Lockerbie served with 2nd, 6th and 1st Battalions of the KOSB.
Born 1891 in Dalton. Son of the late James and Jane Riddell (Johnstone) Ivison of Dormont Lodge, Dalton.
Brother of Mary Jane, Wilhelmina, Christina, Lizzie, Robert and John.
Killed in Action on 12 May 1918 and buried in Cinq Rues British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church as Iveson and on the Lockerbie War Memorial as Ivison.

JAMES JARDINE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Jardine – age 40 – Private (25221) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a gardener at the Keithick Estate near Couper Angus when he enlisted. He served with the 7th/8th, 2nd and 6th Battalions of the KOSB and was made a Prisoner of War at Mount Kemmel on 25 April 1918. He was taken to Friedrichsfeld in September 1918 but died in the Prison Hospital at Darmstadt and was buried in the Forest Cemetery in Hesse. James was re-interred at Niederzwehren in May 1924.
Born 1878 in Dalton. Son of the late John and Janet (McKay) Jardine of Murraythwaite Lodge, Dalton and of 39 Moat Road, Annan, Dumfriesshire.
Husband of Elizabeth (Lauder) Jardine of Bloomfield, Ancrum and of Longnewton, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire who he married in 1913 at Ashkirk, Selkirkshire.
Died on Service on 16 November 1918 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church.

JAS. JOHNSTONE, CORP. K.O.S.B.
James Maxwell Johnstone – age 22 – Lance Corporal (20467) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in January 1915 and joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915. After the evacuation from Gallipoli the battalion and moved to Alexandra in Egypt and then, in March 1916, to Marseilles for service in France. James died in a Casualty Clearing Station at Gezaincourt.
Born 1894 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Son of Walter and Janet (Kerr) Johnstone of Dalton Village.
Died of Wounds on 2 July 1916 and buried in Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church.


WILLIAM KAY, PTE. H.L.I.
William Kay – age 33 – Private (38201) 1/6th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William was a ploughman when he enlisted. He was posted to the 10th/11th Battalion, HLI before being transferred to the 6th HLI.
He died of pneumonia and influenza at his home.
Born c.1886 in ??? (I cannot trace)
Son of Margaret Brown Kay. Husband of Grace (Livingstone) Kay of Hardgrove Cottage, Dalton who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Died on 16 February 1919 and buried in Dalton Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church.

WILLIAM KERR, SERGT. G.H.
William Kerr – age 33 – Sergeant (7084) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
William was a farm servant when he enlisted in January 1900. He served with the 2nd Gordons in South Africa, India and Egypt. The battalion was in Cairo in August 1914 and returned to England before landing at Zeebrugge in October 1914. William was killed at Neuve Chapelle.
Born 1881 in Dalton. Son of the late James and Janet Kerr of Carrutherstown Village, Dalton. He named his sister Mrs. Beckwith Leslie of Annan as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 11 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church.


WALTER KERSHAW, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Walter Kershaw – age 30 – Private (25035) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB before transferring to the 1st Battalion.
Born 1886 in Clitheroe, Lancashire. Son of the late Leonard and Sarah (Hardgrave) Kershaw. Husband of Ellen (McNeish) Kershaw of Murraythwaite Lodge, Dalton and of Knockbeath, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1914 at Roberthill in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 26 February 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church


RICHARD LINTON, BRIG. GEN. A.I.F.
Richard Linton – age 54 – Colonel, Commanding 6th Australian Infantry Brigade.
Richard served his apprenticeship as an ironmonger in Annan. He emigrated to Victoria in Australia in 1888 and received a commission in the Victorian Scottish Regiment. He became a Captain in 1900, a Major in 1903 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1908. He was the proprietor of The Harware Company of Australia. The 6th Brigade were enroute from Alexandria to Gallipoli when the troopship “Southland” was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-14. The majority of the troops were taken off but about 40 were lost. The “Southland” eventually limped back to Mudros and was repaired. Richard died onboard the French destroyer “Massuo” from exposure and heart failure.
Born 1861 in Dalton. Son of the late Thomas and Agnes (Vivers) Linton of Dalton. Husband of Edith Sophia (Cox) Linton of "Dalton", Normanby Street, Middle Brighton, Victoria, Australia.
Died on Active Service on 2 September 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church and on the Bayside War Memorial at Greenside, Brighton, Victoria.

JOHN McDOUGALL, C.P.O. R.N.A.S.
John Joseph McDougall – age 31 – Chief Mechanic (202513) Royal Air Force.
John was a chauffeur when he enlisted in the Royal Navy in January 1915. He was appointed as Petty Officer Mechanic (F2513) Royal Naval Air Service and posted to Howden Airship Station in Yorkshire. He was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in September 1917 and was transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. He died of pneumonia at a Military Hospital in York.
Born 1886 at New Abbey, KIrkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Rutherford) McDougall of West Moor House, New Abbey and of Whinney Hill, Troqueer, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 17 November 1918 and buried in New Abbey Burial Ground.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church and as John McDougall, Whinneyhill, R.A.F., on the New Abbey Parish War Memorial.


JAMES McGREGOR, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Thought to be – but I cannot connect him directly to Dalton
James Macgregor – age 28 – Lance Corporal (12231) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in Dumfries and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915. He was killed four months later at the battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Ardrishaig, Lochgilphead, Argyllshire. Son of William and Catherine (Lamont) MacGregor, of Ardfield, Ardrishaig, Argyllshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church (at LOOS 25th Sept.1915)
His brother, Dugald Macniven Macgregor, Private (17693) 1st KOSB was killed on 11 April 1918.


WILLIAM NIVEN, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Niven – age 37 – Private (16510) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a plasterer in Carrutherstown, Dalton when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but two months later was killed at the battle of Loos.
Born 1878 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Mary (Graham) Niven of Isle of Flosh, Dalton. Husband of Margaret (Notman) Niven (later Mrs. Andrew Martin) who he married in 1904 in Dalton.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church.

WILLIAM SWORD, PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Sword – age 23 – Gunner (59087) "X" 9th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
William enlisted in November 1915 and went to France in March 1916.
Born 1893 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Jemima (Hall) Sword of Hollee, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Annie Anderson (Mars or Parker) Sword of Hurkledale, Cummertrees and of Hallhill Cottages, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1914 in Dalton.
Died of Wounds on 19 July 1916 and buried in La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church and named on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish War Memorial together with his brother John Sword, Private (2238) 1st Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who died on 28 May 1915.


THOMAS THOMSON, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Thomas Thomson – age 24 – Private (12365) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was a gardener at Whitecroft Mansion, Carruthertown, Dalton when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but was killed at the battle of Loos.
Born 1891 in Kirkfieldbank, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire as Thomas Heggison Thomson. Son of Alexander, head gardener at Corehouse, Kirkfieldbank and of Annie (Heggison) Thomson of 28 West Port, Lanark.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and reportedly buried in Cambrin Churchyard but named on the Loos Memorial.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Roll of Honour in the Parish Church, on the Kirkfieldbank War Memorial and on the Lesmahagow War Memorial.

1939 - 1945


A.H. CARRUTHERS, PTE. V.D.F. MALAYA.
Andrew Henry Carruthers – age 27 – Civilian, Federated States of Malaya Volunteer Force.
Andrew was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire and worked for Bousteads & Co. Ltd. (East Indian Merchants) and latterly was an announcer for the Malaysian Broadcasting Corporation in Singapore, He and his wife escaped from Singapore but their ship was bombed and beached on Banka Island. He died from cerebral malaria and beri-beri in a civilian internment camp at Palembang in Sumatra. His wife, who was held in the women's section of the same camp, survived.
Born 1918 registered at both Dalton and Canongate, Edinburgh. Son of the late Colonel Francis John Carruthers and of Olive Christian Johnstone (Douglas) Carruthers of Dormont, Dalton. Husband of Emily Marguerite (Edwards) Carruthers who he married in October 1941 in Kuala Lumpur. Malaya.
Died on 1 September 1945 and buried in Labut Lengau, Sumatra but re-interred in Djakarta War Cemetery, Indonesia.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Church memorial.
Andrew's brothers William Nigel and Michael George were also POWs of the Japanese but survived. (Source: D&G Standard 10/10/1945 p.4)


JAMES M. DUNN, PTE. GORDONS.
James McMillan Dunn – age 25 – Private (2824104) 7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was a chauffeur when he joined up. He died of tuberculosis in Bangour Military Hospital, Broxburn, Uphall, West Lothian.
Born 1917 in Killin, Perthshire. Son of James (a gamekeeper) and Helen Taylor (Congdon) Dunn of Gardens Cottage, Hetland, Carrutherstown, Dalton who had married in 1910 in Dunbar, East Lothian. Husband of Charlotte Margaret Adamson (Halcrow) Dunn of Ruthwell who he married in 1941 in Lerwick, Orkney.
Died on Service on 11 January 1943 and buried in Dalton Parish Churchyard. (CWG)
Also named on the Dalton Parish Church memorial.

JOHN HALLIDAY, PTE. K.O.S.B.
John Halliday – age 22 – Private (3197655) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed at Denbie House, Carrutherstown, Dalton when he enlisted. The 1st KOSB returned to France on D-Day, 6th June, landing at ‘Queen’ Beach. They fought through Normandy and around Caen until the town capitulated. John and 8 other Borderers were buried in Troarn near Caen and were re-interred in Banneville in June 1945.
Born 1922 in Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of Walter and Janet A. (Boyd) Halliday of Flosh and of Mansegate, Dalton.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1944 and buried in Banneville-la-Compagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Church memorial.


C. SCOTT-NICHOLSON, MAJ. LANARK YEO.
Christopher Scott-Nicholson – age 39 – Major (68180) 156 (The Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Christopher graduated B.A. from Oxford University, was commissioned in the Territorial Lanarkshire Yeomanry in July 1936 and was involved with the family business of Hudson, Scott and Sons in Carlisle. He purchased the Whitecroft estate in Dalton in 1939. He served with his Regiment in Persia and Iraq in 1942. He was fluent in French and the Syrian language and was posted to the British Mission in Damascus on the staff of Major General Sir Edward Spears (who was also the MP for Carlisle) Christopher was killed in the Mission's base in the Orient Palace Hotel which was shelled by Free French forces battling Syrian Army forces.
Born 1906 in Carlisle. Son of Edwin Nicholson and Maud Hope Scott, who took the name Scott-Nicholson. Husband of Miriam Stafford (Carr) Scott-Nicholson, of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, who he married in 1930 in Carlisle.
Killed on Service on 30 May 1945 and buried Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Church memorial.


THOMAS WATRET, BDR. R.A.
Thomas Broadfoot Watret – age 38 – Bombardier (3184050) 4 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery.
The Maritime Regiments provided troops to man the guns on Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. Thomas had formerly served with the KOSB.
Born 1907 in Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Andrew Carson Watret and Isabella (Broadfoot) Watret of 12 Huntingdon Square, Dumfries.
Husband of Agnes Chalmers Gibb (Bruce) Watret of Kirkwood Lodge, Dalton who he married in 1937 in Glencorse, Mid-Lothian.
Died on Active Service on 4 June 1945 and buried in Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery, Kolkata, India.
Also named on the Dalton Parish Church memorial.
