Wigtownshire Free Press (24/1/1940): Stranraer suffered its first casualty in the war. John A Muir, 11 Princess Street, was among those who lost their life when the Glasgow tanker, Invergardle, was sunk in the Bristol Channel last week. Mr Mann was second engineer on the tanker. He was a native of Stranraer. For many years his father, John Muir, was gardener at Park House. Mr Muir served his apprenticeship with the Anchor-Donaldson Line. During the last war he was among those saved when the passenger steamer Mongolian was blown up in the Atlantic with the loss of 60 lives. For many years Mr Muir was first engineer with the firm of Frank C Strick & Co Ltd but he left in order to obtain experience in tankers, and became second engineer on the m.t. Invergardle which belonged to Andrew Weir & Co. This was the third tanker lost by the firm since the war began. All the officers were Scotsmen, with one exception. In 1927 Mr Muir, then chief officer on the SS Djerissa, was shipwrecked at Cresswell, Northumberland, when the vessel was driven onto the rocks. All members of the crew were rescued by breeches buoy but the ship became a total wreck. Mr Muir, who was well known in the district, is survived by his widow and a son of 15. A sister and two brothers reside in Glasgow.

We were contacted by Margaret Cameron, John Murray was her great-uncle. She has advised us that the mothers details in this post were incorrect, and I was happy to make the necessary amendments.

Anne, you may wish to update your database with the revised information.
