Name: YOUNG
Initials: A A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Regiment: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Unit Text: 3rd Bn. attd. 2nd Bn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 14/03/1917
Additional information: Son of Alexander and Isobel Aytoun-Young.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 25 and 63
Cemetery: BASRA MEMORIAL

BLAIRGOWRIE ADVERTISER: 24.03.17
On Monday evening Rev A. Aytoun Young, Clunie manse, received information that his younger son, Second Lieut. Alexander Aytoun Young, Black Watch, had died of wounds on 14th inst.
For the past year, Lieut. Aytoun Young had taken part in operations in the East. Some weeks ago he was slightly wounded with shrapnel, and had his wounds dressed in the trench, thereafter going on with his regiment. Recently on a very wet, stormy night, a portion of a trench in which he was was blown in by an enemy shell, and he escaped with a badly crushed arm. Again he pressed on with his regiment, and pursued the enemy in their long retreat. Where the enemy made their last stand he received his fatal wounds, and passed away in a day or two afterwards.
Deceased, who was 22 years of age, was born at Clunie Manse, and was the first boy born there for over 100 years. He attended Clunie Public School before coming to Blairgowrie High School, and from the latter he proceeded to St Andrew’s University, where he took his M.A. degree.
A big, strong, healthy lad, of a remarkably bright and happy disposition, Lieut. Aytoun Young was a first favourite with his fellow pupilsat school, and with his fellow students at University. At the latter, he took an active part in the reading and club rooms, and in everything that was for the benefit and help of his fellow students.
In view of his excellent scholarship, he enlisted as a Second Lieut. In the Black Watch about two years ago, and was trained at Nigg. He left for the East in May, 1916. He was for some time attached to the Staff Office, but he found the life too quiet, and was not satisfied until he was in the fighting line.
His elder brother, Hugh, is at present serving with the Field Artillery at the Front.
The news of the death of Lieut. Aytoun Young caused profound regret throughout the parish; and to Rev. Mr Young and his family, sincerest sympathy has gone out.

The Scotsman of 28th January 1922 reports that this memorial was unveiled on Friday 27th Jaunuary 1921 by Mr Lake Falconer.

The Drinking Fountain had been unveiled in the playground the previous October.

Brillian Adam, thanks. The info being found here is awesome. Interestingly my father's first drawing kit when an apprentice draftsman were originally those of Mr Lake Falconer.
