ALEX. DICKSON, PTE., K.O.S.B.
Alexander Dickson – age 20 – Private (43123) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Alexander enlisted in August 1914 and joined the 1st KOSB as Private (12093) at Gallipoli in August 1915. He was invalided home and then joined the Cameronians in France in July 1916.
Born 1896 in Mouswald. Son of Alexander Grierson Dickson and Mary (Shennan) Dickson of Townfoot Cottages, Mouswald and of Plans Cottage Ruthwell.
Missing in Action on 16 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


ROBERT GRANT, PTE., BLACK WATCH.
Robert Grant – age 20 – Private (S/6991) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders).
Robert was a gardener at Rockhall House, Mouswald when he enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 but was killed three months later at the battle of Loos.
Born 1895 in Skelmorlie, Largs, Ayrshire. Son of Peter and Mary Ann (McGregor) Grant of Prospect Hill, Skelmorlie, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


WM. A. KENNEDY, PTE., H.L.I.
William Alexander Kennedy – age 33 – Private (40896) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1911 William was a ploughman at Hoddom Town Farm. He was living in Ruthwell when he was was posted as Private (7868) to the Royal Scots in France but was transferred to the 17th HLI and then to the 10th/11th Battalion.
Born 1885 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late William and Margaret Kennedy. Brother of John and Samuel Kennedy who he named as his next of kin. In 1911 Samuel, 23, was in Mouswald.
In 1891 at Cummertrees were William Kenedy 40, Margaret 33, James 13, Marion 11, John 7, William Alex. 5, and Samuel 4.
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

JOHN KERR, PTE., K.O.S.B.
John Kerr – age 23 – Private (24904) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at Mouswald School and was a ploughman at Cleuchbrae Farm, Mouswald when he enlisted in June 1916. He went to France in the October.
Born 1893 in Dalton, Dumfriesshire. Son of Francis (Frank) and Harris (Fraser or McDuff) Kerr of Cleughbrae Cottages, Mouswald.
Missing in Action on 23 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


GEORGE B. SHARP, PTE., RYL. HIGHLD. CANADIANS.
George Boyd Sharp – age 23 – Private ( 133044) 13th Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada) Canadian Infantry.
George emigrated to Canada in 1912. He was farming when he enlisted in Montreal, Quebec in October 1915. He arrived in France in June 1916.
Born 1894 Inchinnan, Renfreshire. Son of George Boyd Sharp and of Georgina (McIntosh) Sharp of Mousewald Bank, of Hillview and of "Braeside," Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Alice (Ironside) Sharp of 106 Lafleur Avenue, Verdun, Quebec.
Missing in Action on 15 August 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France,


ANDREW WILSON, L/CPL., H.L.I.
Andrew Wilson – age 19 – Lance Corporal (50610) 1/6th (City of Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Andrew qualified from the Dairy School of the West of Scotland Agricultural College in Kilmarnock and was employed as a milk tester in the Carrick District of Ayrshire when he enlisted as Private (2037) in the 1/8th Royal Scots in April 1916. He went to France in July but was invalided home after three months. After he recovered he was posted in January 1917 to Cairo on Garrison duties as Private (293071) in the 2/7th Northumberland Fusiliers before joining the 1/6th HLI in Palestine. The battalion, as part of the 52nd Lowland Division, arrived at Marseilles in April 1918 for service on Western Front.
Born 1898 in Mouswald. Son of Thomas and Janet Graham Wilson, of Breconrae Cottage, Mouswald and of "Rosedean," Collin, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 3 June 1918 and buried in La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, France.


THOMAS WILSON, PTE. RYL. SCOTS FUS.
Thomas Wilson – age 25 – Private (23987) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Thomas was a road surfaceman and living at Bogside, Mouswald by Ruthwell when he enlisted in January 1916. He was mobilised as Private (23034) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in March and posted to the 2nd RSF in France in June. He was wounded in August 1916 and evacuated to hospital in England. He returned to France to the 6th/7th RSF in January 1917 but was wounded again in April and again evacuated to England. He returned to France in September 1917. He had to be evacuated again due to gas poisoning in May 1918 and returned in October to the 1st RSF. Thomas contracted influenza and died in the 10th General Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1893 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire as Thomas Fergusson.
Son of James and Mary Jane (Fergusson) Wilson of Bogside, Mousewald.
Husband of Isabella (Burgess) Wilson of 33 High Street, Lochmaben and of Ivy Cottage, Hightae, Dumfriesshire who he married in 1916 in Lochmaben. Died on Active Service on 3 November 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

1939-1945

W/O ROBERT THOMSON, R.A.F

Robert Thomson – age 25 – Warrant Officer (1551277) 213 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Roy was educated at Dumfries Academy and worked with his father at their farm of West Mains near Collin, Mouswald. He joined the RAF in December 1940 and qualified as a pilot. In May 1944, 213 Squadron converted from Spitfires to P-51 Mustangs and moved to Biferno, Termoli, Italy in July for operations with the Balkan Air Force. Sweeps were made over Yugoslavia and Albania and Roy was last seen making an attack on a train.
Born 1920 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Alison Thomson, of West Mains, Collin, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 14 February 1945 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.

The Malta Memorial commemorates almost 2,300 airmen who lost their lives during the Second World War whilst serving with the Commonwealth Air Forces flying from bases in Austria, Italy, Sicily, islands of the Adriatic and Mediterranean, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, West Africa, Yugoslavia and Gibraltar, and who have no known grave. The Memorial was unveiled by The Queen on 3 May 1954.
