You may have seen me use the abbreviation UKNIWM in some of my posts followed by a reference number. This is the number in a database being complied by a team at the Imperial War Museum in London to record every war memorial in the UK.
The team reckons there are approximately 55,000 memorials to record. This means by a very simple rule of thumb that Scotland should have between 5,000 and 6,000 war memorials.

At the moment the team are mainly recording details about the memorial’s location, a description of the memorial, its condition and who is responsible for its upkeep.
If funding is available at a later stage they will then make photographs and transcriptions available as well.

The information has been provided by volunteers so some information is basic whilst other entries are very detailed. Hopefully this forum can help fill in some gaps for this very worthy project.

Adam,
It's a very interesting site.
I now know that I have around 34 memorials and Rolls of Honour to search for in the Hawick area Shocked
Some I have seen, some I have known of but some I've never heard about.

What is also very interesting is that some of the memorials also have their Ordnance Survey co-ordinates listed.

OS MAP SEARCH
Just remember to delete the gaps in the OS co-ordinates given.

I did West Lothian for them complete with maps. It did not include some of the Church Memorials
They also have a copy of the book compiled for Currie.

They've been renamed "IWM's War Memorials Archive".

The project was subsequently again renamed as the War Memorials Register-WMR.

As of the end of January 2017 there are just under 71,000 memorials on the system, constantly expanding.

For a long time now the estaimate nationally has been of 100,000 memorials, although I personally estimate closer to 150,000, so a long way to go.

This project started in 1922 in a small way, and has been run by the IWM since, and was always envisaged as the definitive national inventory of war memorials.
