George Thomson – age 31 – Private (38385) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
George was a munitions worker, living in Lady Street, Annan when he married on Christmas Eve 1915. He served as Private (23222) in the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers before he was transferred to the KOYLI while in France.
Born 1885 at Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Janet (Burgess) Thomson of Cove Cottage, and of Irvington, Kirkpatrick-Fleming. (Source: D&G Standard 21/10/1916 p.5 and family grave in Cummertrees Cemetery)
Husband of Mary (Millar) Thomson of Clone Farm, Palnackie, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1915 in Blythswood, Glasgow.
(Source: Millar family grave in Crossmichael Parish Churchyard in Kirkcudbrightshire and GRoS – Marriage Register)
Missing in Action on 1 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Possibly also named on the Wamphray Parish War Memorial, Dumfriesshire.

1914 – 1919

All of the men named here are also on the memorial plaque in the Parish Church.


GEORGE BLACK, GRAHAMSHILL RAILWAY COTTAGES, GORDON HRS

George Black – age 24 – Corporal (S/3452) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
George was working for the British Welding Company in Motherwell when he and his brother William enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France on 3 January 1915.
Born 1892 in Upperby, Carlisle, Cumberland as Lancelot George Black.
Son of Lancelot Black and Mary Black of Grahamhill Railway Cottages, Kirkpatrick Fleming. (Source: family grave in Gretna Cemetery)
Lancelot Black, a railwayman, was accidentally killed near Gretna Station in 1920.
Killed in Action on 25 February 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Motherwell War Memorial.


JOSEPH B. BURNETT, CRANBERRY, A.&.S.H.
Joseph Burnett – age 24 – Lance Corporal (4761 & 276717) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Joseph was a farmer at Cranberry Farm, Ecclefechan when he enlisted as Private (4761) in November 1915. He joined his battalion in France in January 1916.
Born 1894 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Herbert Burnett and of Mary (Ritchie) Burnett of Cranberry Farm, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Gretna Parish War Memorial and on the Gretna Old Parish Church memorial and Roll of Honour.


GEORGE BYERS, WICKETTHORN, CAMERON HRS.
George Byers – age 24 – Private (22475) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
George was a farm servant when he enlisted in April 1916. He went to France July but was killed a month later.
Born 1892 in Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Margaret Byers, of Wicketthorn Cottage, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Died of Wounds on 12 August 1916 and buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

JAMES FARISH, WICKETTHORN, GORDON HRS.
James Farish – age 19 – Private (S/3984) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was employed at the Rosyth naval base when he enlisted at Inverkeithing, Fife. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1896 in Brydekirk, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of William Edward and Hellen Farish of Wicketthorn, Kirkpatrick Fleming and of 91 Chalmers Street, Dunfermline, Fife.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1915 and buried in Fosse 7 Military Cemetery (Quality Street) Mazingarbe, France.


WILLIAM FINLEY, MOSSKNOW LODGE, CAMEL CORPS.
Most military records have Finlay but CWGC have Findlay.
William Findlay – age 23 – Lance Corporal (50267) 7th Company, Imperial Camel Corps.
William enlisted as Private (1844) in the 1/1st Ayrshire Yeomanry in September 1914. (His brother James joined the Scottish Horse Yeomanry at the same time) The Ayrshire Yeomanry moved as dismounted troops to Gallipoli in October 1915. After the withdrawal William joined the Imperial Camel Corps when it was formed in Egypt at the end of 1916.
Born 1895 at Wyseby Lodge, Kirtlebridge, Kirkpatrick Fleming as Finley. Son of William Finley (a coachman) and of Maggie (Simpson) Finley of Mossknowe, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Died of Wounds on 31 March 1918 and buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria.
Also named on the ICC Memorial in London.


RALPH GILBERTSON, MERKLAND, K.O.S.B.
Ralph Albert Ritchie Gilbertson – age 23 – Private (14506) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 Ralph was a Private with the Border Regiment in Carlisle. He was a gamekeeper at Robgill Tower, Kirtlebridge, Kirkpatrick Fleming when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1893 in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Son of Richard and Marion (Rae) Gilbertson of Merkland, Kirtlebridge, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.

CECIL E. GRAHAM, MOSSKNOW, BORDER REGT.
Cecil Erskine Graham – age 34 – Major, 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment attached to 1/5th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment.
Cecil was educated at Rugby School (1896-1898) before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. From there he was commissioned in the 2nd Border Regiment in 1902 and served in Burma, South Africa and Nigeria. He rejoined the 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment in France in December 1916 and was gazetted as a Major in the North Staffordshire Regiment in April 1917. In July, after a day's desperate fighting, most of the Officers were killed or wounded, and two companies cut off. Major Graham organized three attacks to help rescue the two companies and never returned after the third attack. He was last seen in street-fighting near Lens.
Born 1883 in Kirkpatrick Fleming. Son of the late Major General John Gordon Graham and of the late Susanna Mary Elizabeth Touchet (Hay) Graham of Mossknow, Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.
Husband of Gwendoline Helen (Adams) Graham, of 892 Schoeman Street, Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa who he married in St. James, Paddington, London.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


JAMES GRAHAM, GOWKHALL, K.O.S.B.
James Graham – age 20 – Lance Corporal (31375) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 at Scaleridge, Middlebie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Elizabeth Graham.
In 1901 Elizabeth 37 and her family Janet 14, Henry 6, James 3 and Barbara 3 months were at Scaleridge, and in 1911 were at Gawkhall, Kirkpatrick Fleming. Elizabeth 47, Janet 24, Henry 16, James 13, Barbara 10.
James named Barbara and Henry as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 30 September 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


JOHN IRVING, NOUTHILL, GORDON HRS.
John Irving – age 31 – Private (285079) 6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John had been joint tenant of Nouthill Farm, Kirkpatrick Fleming in 1915 and was a farm servant when he enlisted as Private (302226) in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in July 1916. He went to France in early 1917 and was transferred to the Gordons.
Born 1886 in Half Morton, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late David and Agnes Irving of Nouthill Farm. Brother of Mary Irving of Newton, Kirkpatrick Fleming and of Thomas Irving, of Wicketthorn, Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Athies Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
