LTN.COL. A.S.W. MOFFAT, 2nd BOR. RGT.
Archibald Skirving Woolery Moffat, Lieutenant Colonel: 1st Battalion attached to 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment. Age 47.
Archibald was educated at Craigmount School, Edinburgh and in Switzerland before he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 2nd Border Regiment in 1888. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1890; to Captain in 1896; to Major in 1909; and to Lt. Col. in 1915. He had transferred to the 1st Battalion in India in 1909 and in 1911 went to Burma. He returned from there with his battalion at the outbreak of war and rejoined the 2nd Battalion in France in January 1915. Archibald was killed at Festubert.
Born 1867 in Castle Douglas, Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Mary (Skirving) Moffat of Lochbank House, Castle Douglas, Kelton and of Ken Ervie, Parton. Husband of Marjorie (Armstrong) Moffat who he married in 1912 at Nuwara Eliya in Ceylon.
Missing in action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


CPL. A.M. MORRISON, 25th AUS. INF.
Alexander MacPherson Morrison, Corporal (685) 25th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Age 41.
Alexander had joined the army as young man and served with 56 Battery, Royal Field Artillery for 9 years, including 6 years in India. He became a sub-postmaster in Parton before emigrating to Australia to join his brother William of 2 Upper Road, Forest Lodge, Sydney. He was a labourer when he enlisted in Innisfail, Queensland in February 1915. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and moved with them to France in March 1916 where in May he was promoted to Corporal. Alexander was killed at Pozieres.
Born 1874 in Balmaclellan Village, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John Morrison and of his first wife Nicolas McLellan (Waugh) Morrison. John (a widower) married Margaret (Bryden) McLean (a widow) in 1887 and lived in Parton Village thereafter.
Missing in action on 29 July 1916 and named on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.

L-CPL. HUGH RENNIE, 1st SEAFth HRS.
Hugh Rennie, Corporal (S/6716) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Age 19.
Hugh was a clerk at Newton Stewart Railway Station when enlisted in January 1915 and joined his battalion in France in October 1915. In December they moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra late in the month. Hugh was wounded twice and was Mentioned in Dispatches. He died in the 31st Stationary Hospital at Shicksand from wounds received on 22 February 1917.
Born 1897 in Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jessie E. (Black) Rennie of Ken Ervie, Parton and of Diamonds Laggan, Parton.
Died of wounds on 12 March 1917 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. Also remembered on an individual memorial in Parton Parish Church.


CAPT. A.J. SANDERSON, 1st K.O.S.B.
Archibald James Sanderson, Captain: 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 29.
Archibald was commissioned in the KOSB in 1906. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1908 and to Captain in November 1914 and had served in Egypt and India. In August 1914 the battalion was in Lucknow and returned to the UK in December. In March 1915 they sailed for Gallipoli and Archibald was wounded during the landings at Gallipoli on 26 April 1915. He died on board the Hospital Ship “Sicilia” and was buried at Sea.
Born 1886 in Farnham, Surrey. Son of Colonel Patrick Sanderson and of Mary Margaret R. (Spens) Sanderson of Glenlaggan, Parton.
Died of wounds and buried at sea on 2 May 1915. Named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey and on memorials in Parton Parish Church and in St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, New Galloway.


PTE. WILLIAM SPOWAGE, 8th K.O.Y.L.I.
William Henry Spowage, Private (38362) 5th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Age 37.
In 1911 William was butler at Hardwick Hall, Ellesmere, Shorpshire and he was butler at Glenlaggan, Parton when he enlisted in March 1916 as Private (23247) in the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was severely wounded in December 1916 but returned to France in October 1917 and served with the 8th, 10th and 5th Battalions of the KOYLI.
Born 1881 in Jump, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Son of Herbert and Priscilla (Parkes) Spowage.
Died of wounds on 19 September 1918 and buried in Grevilers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the memorial in St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in New Galloway and on the Welsh Frankton Parish War Memorial in Shropshire.

SERGT. J. TODD, 7th K.O.S.B.
James Todd, Sergeant (13702) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
James was a gamekeeper at Parton House when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1891 at Kirkurd, Peeblesshire. Son of John and Jane (Wilson) of Rosemount of Callange, Ceres, Fife and of West Kirkland, Wigtownshire.
Killed in action on 27 September 1915 and buriedin Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery,Lacouture, France.
Also named on the Ceres Parish War Memorial.
The 7th Battalion lost about two-thirds of its strength and the 8th over one-third at the Battle of Loos, and the two Battalions were amalgamated in the spring of 1916.


SAPPER A.A. THOMSON, R.E.
Andrew Alexander Thomson, Sapper (167319) Royal Engineers. Age 32.
(General Base Depot attached to the Works Office, Kirechoj.)
Andrew was living at Glenlee, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire and was working as a wheelwright when he enlisted in February 1916. He was mobilised in May and was posted to Salonica in January 1917 but died of dysentery in the 42nd General Hospital in Kalamaria.
Born 1884 in Parton. Son of William and Jane (Charters) Thomson. Brother of James Thomson of Parton Village.
Died on active service on 19 June 1917 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.


PTE. G. THOMSON, 2nd R.S.F.
Note: military records spell his name as Thompson.
George Thompson, Private (10286) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 25.
George had served as a regular in the army for 5 years and was in Preston when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge on 6 October 1914 and was killed near Ypres.
Born 1888 in Parton. Son of Margaret Thomson. George lived with his grandparents John and Agnes Thomson in Parton Village in 1891 & 1901.
Missing in action on 31 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

CPL. A.S. WATSON, 6th SCOTh HORSE.
See previous posts regarding Regiment.
Adam Skirving Watson, Lance Corporal (225960) 10th Battalion (Lovat's Scouts) Cameron Highlanders. Age 29.
Adam enlisted as Private (611) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in September 1914. He served as Private (6728) with the 1/3rd Battalion, Scottish Horse Yeomanry and landed at Gallipoli in September 1915. In October 1916 in Egypt he was transferred to Lovat's Scouts and then to the 10th Camerons before moving to Salonica in Northern Greece.
Born 1887 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Sarah (McBride) Watson of Tintum, Parton.
Killed in action 31 January 1917 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Salonica, Greece.
Also named on an individual memorial in Parton Parish Church.

Samuel Watson, Sergeant (8752) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 29.
A former gamekeeper at Castlewig, Wigtownshire, Samuel had served with the KOSB for over 11years. In August 1914 the battalion was in Lucknow and returned to the UK in December. In March 1915 they sailed for Gallipoli landing on 26 April 1915. He was part of the Battalion's Machine Gun Section during the attack of 4 June and was killed when the Turks counter-attacked during the 3rd Battle of Krithia.
Born 1885 in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Sarah (McBride) Watson of Tintum, Parton.
Missing in action 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on an individual memorial in Parton Parish Church.

PTE. W. WINDSOR, 7th SEAFORTH HRS.
Walter Duncan Grieve Windsor, Private (202918) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Age 19.
Walter was a Butler at Glenlaggan, Parton when he enlisted as Private (25619) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in June 1916. He was transferred to the Seaforths.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of James and Mary Jane (Kirkpatrick) of Crocketford, Kirkpatrick-Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in action on 16 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirkpatrick-Durham War Memorial.


2nd LT. J. WEDDERBURN MAXWELL, 6th K.O.S.B.
James Wedderburn-Maxwell, Second Lieutenant:3rd attached to 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
James was educated at Charterhouse and at Edinburgh University where in 1917 he was a member of the OTC. He was commissioned in March 1918 and posted to 6th KOSB in France in August 1918. He was wounded at Passchendaele Ridge and killed at Ledeghem Station.
Born 1899 at Glenlair, Corsock, Parton. Son of Major James Andrew Colville and Helen Mary (Godfrey) Wedderburn-Maxwell.
Died of wounds on 1 October 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Corsock War Memorial, the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen and on a memorial in St. Ninian's Church, Castle Douglas.

Capt A J Sanderson had his photo published in the War Illustrated, Volume 3, page 1072. My electronic copy is quite poor so not really worth posting.

This is now WMR, ex UKNIWM memorial 71820.

It is a constant source of amazement to me that a past field worker walked into the church, recorded what was there but somehow missed this obelisk, but that happens with great frequency.
