PRIVATE W. A. HAWKINS, HLI
William Alexander Hawkins, Private (14209094) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) Age 23.
Born 1921 at Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Hannah Hawkins of Crocketford, Urr.
Killed in action on 19 April 1945 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.
“Alex” was buried at Wittlohe near Bremen and was re-interred at Becklingen in July 1946.
Also named on the Corsock War Memorial.

PRIVATE T. KENNEDY, KOSB
Thomas Kennedy, Private (3188733) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Thomas was a joiner working at Heathhall and was a member of the Dumfries Territorials. He died of heart failure in the Church of Scotland canteen in High Street, Dunbar.
Born 1920 at Dumfries. Son of Mr & Mrs David Kennedy of Springholm, Urr.
Died on Service on 30 December 1940 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery (CWG)
Also remembered on the Springholm village War Memorial.

PRIVATE J. H. McCRINK, RAMC
John Henry McCrink, Private (14824880) 26 Indian General Hospital, Royal Army Medical Corps. Age 20.
Born at Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of Joseph and Hilda McCrink of Haugh of Urr.
Died on Service on 25 August 1946 and buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq.

RIFLEMAN W. McLAUCHLAN, RIFLE BRI.
William McLauchan, Rifleman (6914437) 9th Battalion, (1st Battalion, Tower Hamlet Rifles) Rifle Brigade. Age 23.
Born 1918 at Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of George and Margaret McLauchlan of Hillcrest, Hardgate, Haugh of Urr.
Died of Wounds on 15 February 1942 and buried in Helipolis War Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.

PRIVATE G. K. RAE, HLI
George Kitchener Rae, Private (3194159) 10th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) Age 29.
Born 1916 at Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William Kidd Rae and Robina Rae of Milton of Urr. Husband of Edith (Hussey) Rae of Arbour Cottage, New Abbey and of Largs, Ayrshire who he married in 1941 at Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in action on 14 April 1945 and buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
George was originally buried in Holdenstedt Cemetery but was re-interred in Hanover in June 1947.
Also named on the New Abbey WW2 Memorial.

WAR MEMORIALS

URR PARISH.— The memorial erected by the parishioners of Urr in memory of the forty men who fell in the war, was unveiled by Colonel R. F. Dudgeon, C.B., of Cargen, Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry, and dedicated by the Rev. Dr Frew, minister of the parish. The ceremony was also taken in part by the Rev. P. C. Gaskin, United Free minister, and Lieut.-Col. W. D. Y. Herries of Spottes, who presided. The memorial takes the form of a chaste Celtic cross, and is constructed in Galloway granite.
