He went to France on 11 July, 1915. His mining experience was required and at some point he was transferred to 180th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.

The 180th Tunnelling Company was formed at Labuissiere in the Autumn of 1915, and moved into the Vermelles Sector. It was engaged in building saps and trenches, in addition to a lot of 'carrying work' during the Battle of Loos. The Coy moved to the Givenchy area and was relieved there in early 1916 by the 255th Coy.

Charles ANDERSON was promoted to Lance Corporal and then to Corporal.

On 8 April, 1916, Charles (then age 22 and a LCpl in the Royal Engineers) married Isabella Bradshaw Buchanan (then age 26) at 4 Minerva Street, Glasgow.
I have been unable to trace any children of the marriage.

From the military records available, Charles ANDERSON enlisted at Hamilton as Pte S/5721, 8th Bn Seaforth Highlanders.
He went to France on 9 July, 1915.

Charles ANDERSON was reported as 'Missing and Presumed Dead' on 25 September, 1915, at the Battle of Loos.
He is commemorated at Loos Memorial, France. There are 20,615 casualties commemorated at Loos Memorial who have no known grave.

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his father Charles received his Outstanding Pay of £1/6/6 and a War Gratuity of £3/-/-.

Charles ANDERSON was awarded The 1914-15 Star Medal; The Victory Medal; and The British War Medal.

(Courtesy of Walter Smith) An article was in The Hamilton Advertiser on 27 November, 1915, states:
"LARKHALL
Posted as Missing - In an official note from the War Office, Mr and Mrs Anderson, 46 Hamilton Street, have been notified that their son, Piper Charles Anderson (5721), 8th Seaforth Highlanders, is missing since the engagement of 25th September. Any information regarding him will be gratefully received by his parents at the above address."

We can see that Charles is described as a "Piper".
You will also see that he is listed on the War Memorial as "Piper C.A.M. ANDERSON".
A 'Piper' was a military rank or appointment, yet no military records show that he held that appointment.
It is also worth noting that due to the exingencies of war, military records were not always 'bang up to date'.

PostPosted: Sat Jan 07, 2017 9:34 pm    Post subject: Pte M. O. BOYLE and Pte P. O. BOYLE, both Cameron Highrs Reply with quote

The names of Pte M. O. BOYLE and Pte P. O. BOYLE, both of the Cameron Highlanders, are listed on the Larkhall War Memorial.

I am able to trace PETER BOYLE, Pte S/15522, 7th Bn Cameron Highlanders.

PETER BOYLE, Pte S/15522, 7th Bn Cameron Highlanders had a brother MICHAEL BOYLE and both were born in Larkhall.
I cannot find any trace of military records for MICHAEL BOYLE, MICHAEL O. BOYLE, M.O. BOYLE, or M. O'BOYLE.
The only MICHAEL BOYLE of the Cameron Highlanders I can find is MICHAEL O'BOYLE, Pte S/10439 2nd Bn, born in Blantyre.

For this reason I am making the assumption that the names on the Larkhall War Memorial are those of the brothers MICHAEL and PETER BOYLE, but I cannot provide CWGC information on MICHAEL.

MICHAEL BOYLE was born at Larkhall on 5th August, 1884.
PETER BOYLE was born at Larkhall on 9th October, 1892.

Their parents were Michael Boyle, a Coal Miner, and Mary McManus who were married at Larkhall on 31 December, 1881.
Their paternal grandparents were Anthony Boyle, a Labourer, and Bridget Kelly.
Their maternal grandparents were John McManus and Helen Murphy.

The 1891 LARKHALL Census was taken on 5 April 1891.
The family are listed at 22 Raploch, Larkhall, as follows:
Michael Boyle, age 34, Head, Coal Miner, b Co. Mayo, Ireland
Mary Boyle, age 31, Wife, b Dalserf
Helen Boyle, age 8, Daughter, Scholar, b Larkhall
MICHAEL BOYLE, age 7, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall
John Boyle, age 3, Son, b Larkhall
James Boyle, age 1, Son, b Larkhall.

On 27 September, 1894, Mary McManus or Boyle, age 34, died at Raploch, Larkhall.

The 1901 LARKHALL Census was taken on 31 Mar 1901.
The family are listed at The Raploch, Larkhall, as follows:
Michael Boyle, age 43, Head, Widower, Coal Miner, b Ireland
Nellie Boyle, age 19, Daughter, b Larkhall
MICHAEL BOYLE, age 17, Son, Coal Miner, b Larkhall
John Boyle, age 14, Son, Coal Miner, b Larkhall
James Boyle, age 11, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall
PETER BOYLE, age 9, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall.

In 1905, Helen Boyle married Edward McGunnigal at Larkhall.

In 1908, John Boyle married Susan McQuade at Larkhall.

The 1911 LARKHALL Census was taken on 2 Apr 1911.
The family are listed at 114 Wellgate Street, Larkhall, as follows:
Edward McGunnigal, age 28, Head, Coal Miner, b Larkhall
Ellen McGunnigal, age 28, Wife, b Larkhall
Ellen McGunnigal, age 10, Daughter, Scholar, b Larkhall
William McGunnigal, age 6, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall
Bridget McGunnigal, age 3, Daughter, b Larkhall
Michael McGunnigal, age 2, Son, b Larkhall
Edward McGunnigal, age 4 months, Son, b Larkhall
Michael Boyle, age 56, Boarder, Widower, Coal Miner, b Co. Mayo, Ireland
MICHAEL BOYLE, age 26, Boarder, Coal Miner, b Larkhall
James Boyle, age 21, Boarder, Coal Miner, b Larkhall
PETER BOYLE, age 18, Boarder, Coal Miner, b Larkhall.

PETER BOYLE joined the Cameron Highlanders as Pte S/15522, and went to France on 8th July, 1915, with his Battalion.

Some pages of PETER BOYLE's Service Record have survived.
PETER BOYLE enlisted on 16 November, 1914, at Larkhall, age 22.
He went to France on 8th July, 1915, and was reported as Missing-In-Action on 25th September, 1915.
His status was later changed to Missing Presumed Dead.
His Next-Of-Kin is shown as his brother John Boyle, 20 Station Road, Larkhall.

On 30th March, 1917, Michael Boyle, age 59, died at 114 Wellgate Street, Larkhall.
His death was reported by his son James Boyle, 134 John Street, Larkhall.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for PETER BOYLE shows that he is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais, France.
The CWGC records show that a soldier, previously thought to be that of another, was identified as that of Pte S/15522 PETER BOYLE, 7th Bn Cameron Highlanders.

The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) at Edinburgh Castle shows that PETER BOYLE is commemorated there.

The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that PETER BOYLE enlisted in Hamilton (This is an error - his Service Records show that he enlisted in Larkhall, and the Enlistment Papers were later authorised in Hamilton).

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for PETER BOYLE shows that he was awarded the 1914-15 Star Medal, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his father Michael received his Outstanding Pay of £2/9/-.
A War Gratuity of £3/-/- was distributed equally to his brothers John, James and his sister Helen McGunnigal.

PETER BOYLE, Pte S/15522, 7th Bn Cameron Highlanders, is buried at Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, Pas de Calais, France. There are 1,720 names buried there.

The inscription on his Headstone reads:
"REQUIESCANT IN PACE".
This was requested by his brother and Next-Of-Kin John Boyle, 20 Station Road, Larkhall.

PETER DOWNS and ROBERT DOWNS were brothers. They are both named on the Larkhall Memorial.

PETER DOWNS, Pte S/14117, 7th Bn, Cameron Highlanders.
ROBERT DOWNS, Pte S/24427, 7th Bn Royal Highlanders (Black Watch).

[NOTE: There are spelling differences between the names on the Memorial and other records. Their birth records are spelled DOUNS.]

PETER DOWNS was born at 146 Raploch Street, Larkhall, on 9th September, 1894.
ROBERT SMITH DOWNS was born at Victoria Street, Larkhall, on 4th December, 1898.

Their parents were Peter Downs, a Coal Miner, and Lily Browning Smith who were married at Larkhall on 30 June, 1893.
Their paternal grandparents were Alexander Rae, a Quarry Labourer, and Janet Downs, a Tambourer.
Their maternal grandparents were Robert Smith, a Coal Miner and Elizabeth Potter.

The 1901 LARKHALL Census was taken on 31 March, 1901.
The family are listed at Victoria Street, Larkhall, as follows:
Peter Downs, age 33, Head, Coal Miner, b Glasgow.
Lily Downs, age 32, Wife, b Larkhall.
PETER DOWNS, age 7, Son, Scholar, b Larkhall.
Bessie Downs, age 5, Daughter, b Larkhall.
ROBERT DOWNS, age 2, Son, b Larkhall.
William Downs, age 19, Brother, Shopkeeper, b Larkhall.

The 1911 LARKHALL Census was taken on 2 April, 1911.
The family are listed at 28 Duke Street, Larkhall, as follows:
Peter Downs, age 43, Head, Coal Miner, b Glasgow.
Lily Downs, age 42, Wife, b Larkhall.
PETER DOWNS, age 16, Son, Colliery Labourer, b Larkhall.

PETER DOWNS was Killed-In-Action on 4 June, 1916, age 21.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for PETER DOWNS shows that he is buried at VERMELLES BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France.
VERMELLES was in German hands from the middle of October 1914 to the beginning of December 1914, when it was recaptured by the French. The cemetery was begun in August 1915 (though a few graves are slightly earlier), and during the Battle of Loos, when the Chateau was used as a Casualty Dressing Station, Plot I was completed. It was laid out and fenced by the Pioneers of the 1st Gloucesters, and known for a long time as "Gloucester Graveyard". The remaining Plots were made by the Divisions (from the Dismounted Cavalry Division onwards) holding the line 1.6 kilometres East of the cemetery until April 1917, and they incorporated a few isolated French graves of October 1914. From April 1917, to the Armistice, the cemetery was closed; but after the Armistice some graves were re-grouped and others were brought in (to Plots II, IV and VI) from the battlefields to the East.
There are now over 2,134 First World War casualties commemorated in this cemetery. Of these, 198 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to six soldiers from the United Kingdom, known to be buried among them.
This cemetery also contains the graves of 11 casualties of other nationalities.

PETER DOWNS is commemorated at The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) in Edinburgh Castle.

The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that PETER DOWNS enlisted in Larkhall.

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for PETER DOWNS shows that he was awarded The 1914-15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his mother Lily received his Outstanding Pay of £2/2/6 and a War Gratuity of £7/-/-.

A clipping taken from The Hamilton Advertiser dated 1st July, 1916.
It reads:
"KILLED IN ACTION - Mr. and Mrs. Peter Downs, Duke Street, have been notified from the War Office that their son, Private Peter Downs, Cameron Highlanders, had been killed in action abroad on 4th June. He enlisted in the 7th November, 1914, and went with his battalion to France in July last year. He was wounded at the Battle of Loos, and invalided home, but returned to the front some months ago. Private Downs was a member of the "Anchor of Hope" Tent of Rechabites, treasurer of boy's and girls' meeting held at Meadowhill, and also a member of the Parish Church Guild. He was 21 years of age, and worked in Bog Colliery previous to enlisting.
<snip>".

ROBERT DOWNES joined the 7th Bn Black Watch as Pte S/24427.
His Medal Roll Index Card (MIC) is not dated indicating that he went to France after 1916.
He was born in December, 1898, so he would have been 18 (available for conscription) when the Military Service Act, 1916, came into operation.
On 27th January, 1916, The Military Service Act, 1916, was passed by Parliament and came into operation on 10th February, 1916.
ROBERT DOWNES was Killed-In-Action on 24 July, 1918, age 19.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for ROBERT DOWNES shows that he is commemorated at SOISSONS MEMORIAL, Aisne, France.
There are 3,878 Casualties commemorated on SOISSONS MEMORIAL.
The CWGC Panel List and a photo of the panel showing ROBERT DOWNES' name are attached.
The town of Soissons is on the left bank of the River Aisne, about 100 kilometres North-East of Paris.

ROBERT DOWNES is commemorated at The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) in Edinburgh Castle.

The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that ROBERT DOWNES was born in Dalserf and enlisted in Hamilton.

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for ROBERT DOWNES shows that he was awarded The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his Outstanding Pay and a War Gratuity totaling of £12/19/9 was distributed as follows:
{Executors of his Father's Estate (John Scott, Alexander P. Smith & John Frame)} £6/9/10.
