Killed in Action on March 29th 1917, Private Samuel Jack, Gordon Highlanders youngest Son of Mr and Mrs Samuel Jack Barnes street Barrhead “For many years our family chain’s been closely linked together, But now the first link has snapped, And gone forever. May heavenly winds blow softly O,er that hallowed spot, And although the sea devices us, He will never be forgot .
(Father, Mother, Brothers and sisters at Barnes Street.)
Intimation has been received by Mr (Samuel)and Mrs (Jeannie) Jack 32 Barnes street that their youngest Son Pte Samuel Jack of the Gordon Highlanders (Scout troop ) was killed in action on 29th Mar 1917. He was 21 years of age, and had been on active service for the past two years. He had been through a good deal of the stiffest fighting of the war and was wounded at Loos but came through the Somme battles without a scratch. An officer's testimony of Him says- "He was well liked by everybody and was a brave and willing lad, He died doing his duty as a scout and he did it well,"
Jack enlisted at the beginning of the war and prior to that was in the brass finishing dept of Tubal Foundry Barrhead.
Samuel is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Plot: Bay 8 and 9.

The son of John and Margaret Kennedy, of 26, Stanley Rd., Saltcoats, Ayrshire; husband of Isabella Robertson.
Mrs Graham 37 Graham street received intimation of the death of her Son sergeant Adam J Kennedy of B coy 1st Battalion Gordon highlanders age 26 years, Serg Kennedy enlisted in the Army 4 years ago And before that had been in the American Navy and had gone round the world in the "Maine" and was in the Montana in the Mediterranean during the time of the Turkish Troubles.. After his return from America and before joining the Army the deceased was employed with the Waterproofing company at Gateside.
He was a man of steady character and evidently got on well in the army, having attained the rank of Sergeant some time ago. The deceased belonged to a soldier family for his father had the bronze medal for the Kabul to Kandahar march under Lord Roberts, And earlier representatives fought at Waterloo and in the Crimea. Another of Mrs Kennedy's sons joined Kitcheners Army on the out break of war, and is now in the Royal Engineers. Sad Feature associated with sergeant Kennedy's death is the fact that he leaves a young widow. having been married earlier in the present year.

"Intimation has been received by Mrs Kennedy, 37 Graham Street, Barrhead, of the death on November 17 of her son, Sergeant Adam Kennedy, of the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. Sergeant Kennedy had been shot a few days earlier, and died of his wounds. He belonged to a soldier family, his father having the bronze medal for the Kabul to Kandahar march under Lord Roberts, whilst his grandfather fought in the Crimea and an earlier progenitor was with Wellington at Waterloo."

Mr James Leckie 3 BarnesStreet Barrhead has received word that his eldest son Pte Peter Leckie of the Seaforth Highlanders was killed in action on July 24th Pte Leckie was only 19 years of age, he was called to the Colours age 18, and sent to Frace in April of the present year, In civil live he was a grocer and before being called up was in the employment of Paisley Equitable Co-Operative Society

Peter Has no known grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial Soissons, Departement de l'Aisne, Picardie, France

Lanark and the war
Mr Alexander MacFadyen, Dentist of Barrhead and Lanark has received official intimation that his son Private J C Macfadyen of the Black Watch has been killed in action. Very recently Private MacFadyen was awarded the Military medal for gallantry. Prior to the war Private MacFadyen was employed on the railway at Castairs. The Chaplain writing to his parents of the young man . States:- " I happened to be visiting an advanced ambulance dressing station on 31st Inst,. when your son was carried in severely wounded. He was shot through the neck and was quite unconscious and in a few minutes afterwards passed away into prefect peace and rest. He had not been carried far, as the battalion were in reserve. The Germans were shelling very heavily. And he was one among others hit. I need not say how very sorry we all are to lose him, Especially just after his fine service had been recognised by the Military Medal, the Colonel having presented him with the ribbon. You have our deepest sympathy. but it will be of comfort and pride to a mother's heart to know that her son lived so honourably and died so nobly. I buried him in the soldiers cemetery and a cross will be erected to mark the grave." Private MacFadyen was only 17 1/2 years when he enlisted and had been through Loos and other big battles.
James is commemorated at Flatiron Copse Cemetery Mametz Departement de la Somme Picardie, France Plot: I. E. 19. and on the South and Levern Church Main street Barrhead.
Flatiron Copse Cemetery is on the right hand side of D929, Amiens-Albert-Bapaume, 10 kilometres east of Albert.
Flatiron Copse was the name given by the army to a small plantation a little to the east of Mametz Wood.
The ground was taken by the 3rd and 7th Divisions on 14 July 1916 and an advanced dressing station was established at the copse. The cemetery was begun later that month and it remained in use until April 1917. Two further burials were made in August 1918 and after the Armistice, more than 1,100 graves were brought in from the neighbouring battlefields

In a letter to Mrs Miller 17 Graham street (Jane Carslaw Clark Miller)The Rev. Herbert Reid Chaplin to the 1st 8th A&SH informs her that her Husband Private David R Miller of the 1st 6th A&SH was killed on the afternoon of Sunday 8th Aug/ Pte miller was a Son of Mr ad Mrs David Miller of 18 Glen street Barrhead. He was 24 years of age, was married and leaves a widow and one child. (A small daughter) He was an enthusiastic member of the territorials for some years before the beginning of the war and was mobilised with his battalion last August, proceeding to France in the beginning of May 15, Pte Miller was a member of the Machine gun section , In the course of his letter Chaplain Reid tells how Private Miller was shot while assisting the 1st 6th to make an emplacement for the machine gun." The doctor," He Says, " Was quickly in attendance but your Husband never regained consciousness, and died shortly afterwords. His body was brought to the village behind the firing line by his comrades and in the evening we buried him beside a comrade Private Ritchie also form Barrhead. Loving hands are making the grave beautiful as possible, A little cross will be erected with his name etc., as soon as possible, His comrades join with me in sending you and his mother and other members of the family our deepest sympathy. The only comfort I can give you is that your dear husband was spared all suffering, and when the first anguish of grief is past I want you to be proud and to remember that he died a true Soldiers death, with his face in the foe in the very forefront of the Battle, Giving his life nobly for King and Country, And we believe also for the cause of justice and righteousness, which is te cause of God.I pray that the good Lord may make his presence felt. and you may feel that around you and about you are the everlasting Arms of Love," The chaplain also adds that David had in his pocket a copy of the League and Testament with his name and adds that this will be sent home. To all those bereaved families the sympathy of all the district will go out in their time of sorrow.
David is commemorated at Peronne Road Cemetery Burial Plot: I. F. 36. Maricourt, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.
The 1st 6th Argyll and sutherland highlanders are pictured leaving Bedford England after basic training for France on the 1st of May 1915 barely 3 months later David was dead.
David is listed at Cowan Park war memorial Barrhead

Mrs Mitchell 2 Ferguslie Paisley, Has received official word from the War office that her husband Pte James Mitchell 14th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland highlanders, who was posted missing on the 21st -27th March 1918 is now officially presumed killed on or between these dates, Previous to the war he was employed as an Iron moulder with the firm of Saunders and Connor Barrhead, and was the youngest Son of James Mitchell and the Late Mrs Mitchell 17 Paisley road Barrhead.
James is commemorated on Bay 9 on the The Arras Memorial, This is in the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, which is in the Boulevard du General de Gaulle in the western part of the town of Arras.

He had been for a considerable time in France but home recently on leave and only returned to France a few weeks ago:
