Comments;-Private Robert Cunningham A&SH killed in action 9th April 1917 the Son of Mr and Mrs Alan Cunningham 32 Calibar rd. Robert enlisted in Oct 1914 and previously been employed in the fleshing dept of the Co-operative society Barrhead.
Listed with Co-operative employees with the colours.
Robert is commemorated on Grave Reference:
I. A. 22. Roclincourt Military Cemetery Pas de Calais. This cemetery contains 916 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 32 of them unidentified. There are also four German war graves.

Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916.

Mrs Dow has received official intimation that her Husband Private James Dow Royal Scots was Killed in Action 3rd June, Private Dow was called to the Colours last August and had been at the front since before last Christmas (1916) He worked for a long time in Falkirk but worked for a short time with Messers Shanks and Coy before Joining the Army;
His widow Mary was left under £5 in James's effects account.
James Has no known grave and is Commemorated on

The Son of the late William Fleming of Springhill View Barrhead Renfrewshire Scotland.

William Fleming was born May 23, 1892 at Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland to William & Mary (Bryce) Fleming. He had two brothers and six sisters. He immigrated to the United States in October of 1912 joining two of his siblings there–Mrs. James [Mary Fleming] Hume and Robert Fleming.
The local newspaper provided his biography: Gave His Life For The Cause of Liberty
Republic County mourns this week its first victim of a German bullet. Corporal William Fleming of this city was killed in action on Friday, June 7th. The deceased was born May 23, 1892 at Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and gave to manhood in that country, having graduated from the Public Academy. He came to America in October 1912, and stayed with his sister Mrs. Hume, then living at St. Joseph, Mo. Shortly after arriving he applied for his first papers to become a citizen of this grand and good country. He worked for the C. B & Q. Railroad for some time, later coming to this city. He worked here as section laborer, apprentice foreman, and later as foreman, being in the employ of the C.R.I. & P. railway for nearly 18 months in this city. He was transferred to Manhattan where he had charge of the section at that city until April 1917, when he enlisted in Co. B., Second Engineers, at St. Joseph Mo. He was sent to El Paso, Texas for his training, and in the month of September 1917 was sent to France…. He was a member of Cuba Lodge No. 362, A.F. & A. M. He leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Mr. T.C. Preble and Mrs. James Hume and one brother, Robert Fleming of this city, besides five sisters and one brother in Scotland. — The Cuba Daylight, Cuba, Republic County, Kansas, Thursday, June 20, 1918
William Fleming was killed at Belleau-Woods, France on 7 June 1918.
The Belleville Telescope (Belleville, Kansas); 27 June 1918, page 1–Wm. Fleming Honored. The citizens of Cuba and vicinity honored the memory of Corporal William Fleming who died in Action in France June 7th. At the band concert last Thursday evening the band played “Taps” as they unfurled a service flag with a gold star in it in honor of Corporal Fleming.

CUBA MAN IS KILLED
Corporal William Fleming Lost Life in France June 7. Cuba, June 15.–(Special)–Corp. William Fleming of this city was killed in France, June 7. He was a member of Company B, Second Missouri engineers, having enlisted in April last year. He was 26 years of age and a member of the local Masonic Lodge. He is survived by a brother and two sisters.
Corp. William Fleming of Cuba was the first Republic county man to be killed in action in France. He is buried Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Plot A, Row 3, Grave 31. The William Fleming American Legion Post 345, was named in his honor.

On the morning of June 6th. 1918, Company "A," then at La Croisette Woods, was ordered to proceed overland to the Bois de Bourbelin. a distance of about two kilometers. At 3.40 A. M. June 6th, when practically at its destination, the enemy shelled the road travelled, sending over seven shells, all of which burst very close
to the company column, instantly killing one man and wounding three; one of the wounded died next day. (7th June)
The company immediately deployed into the woods and
commenced digging shelters. The woods and immediate surrounding territory occupied by the company was heavily shelled by the enemy, and in the afternoon a great number of stray bullets of a machine gun barrage went through the woods.
During the afternoon the company went out until 7:00 P. M. to dig trenches on the line held by the 2nd battalion of the 9th Infantry, when orders were received to proceed to Lucy-le-Bocage.
William is commemorated at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial Belleau Departement de l'Aisne
Picardie, France.

Comments; Thomas had 10 years service with the local Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders territorial force in Renfrewshire Scotland.
Thomas Proceeded Via Alexandria to jin the British expeditionary force in France on the 19th of March 1916, He landed at Marseilles and proceeded to join his unit in the Field. There are various online resources that comply the movements of the 2nd Australian Pioneers from March 1916 until March 1918 when Thomas was killed in action age 39 years.
The 2nd Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was initially raised for service during the First World War as part the Australian Imperial Force and saw action at Gallipoli before being sent to the Western Front in mid-1916, where it spent the next two-and-a-half years taking part in the fighting in the trenches of France and Belgium. Following the conclusion of hostilities, the battalion was disbanded in early 1919 as part of the demobilisation process.

Lost at Sea in the sinking of HT 'Arcadian';
Comments: Dr Grier Missing - Mr Thomas Grier has received a telegram from the war office stating that his son Dr William Grier lieutenant in The RAMC Is missing supposed drowned. The intimation is such as to leave a very slight margin of hope that the last clause may yet prove untrue and to hope . Dr Grier's relatives and his many friends and Patients in the district will naturally cling as long as possible. There will be general sympathy with his father and family on the part of the general public every section of which will join with them in the hope that better news will follow. Dre Grier was a very successful medical student and after a period of special training began practice in Barrhead about Five years ago.
He was called up for medical service some months ago and a few weeks since left England for one of the seats of war. A brother Dr James Grier also in the R.A.M.C has given a good deal of service in France We is presently in this country but expects to return to the war zone very shortly A cousin Mr Robert Grier of Gateside has been severely wounded and is now in a London Hospital.
William was of Craig Park Barrhead
William is commemorated at Mikra Memorial Kalamaria, Regional unit of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece, The Family stone in Neilston cemetery and on his old School war memorial at Glasgow High school 637 Crow Road, Glasgow G13 1PL

"Killed in action in France, on Tuesday the 4th inst, George Hunter, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, aged 28 years, elder son of George and Catherine Hunter, of Knowes Cottages, Glenfield, Paisley, and husband of Maggie Winning, 8 Lintmill Terrace, Neilston."
"Official notice has been received of the death in action on Tuesday, 4th inst., of Private George Hunter, of the 1st Scots Guards. Private Hunter, who was 28 years of age and married, joined the Army in September last, and has been in France for the last two months. He served his time as a brassfinisher in Barrhead, and was employed with Messrs Doulton, Paisley, when he enlisted.
Barrhead News" Another local man killed Intimation appears in our obituary columns this week of the death in action of Pte Geo. Hunter of the 1st Scots Guards. Pte Hunter was shot in the Head on Tuesday of the present week and seems to have succumbed to his injury shortly after admission to the hospital Pte Hunder was 28 years of age , was married and was the son of Mr and Mrs Hunter Knowes Cottage, Glenfield. He was a brass finisher to trade and had received his apprenticeship with messers Liggat, Caledonian Brass works Barrhead. But latterly was employed with messers Doulton Paisley. He joined the forces shortly after the beginning of the war and had ben in France for 6 to 8 weeks.
George is Commemorated Grave Reference: I. A. 84.
