Barrhead news May 1917 reported "Pte James McCabe Australian Forces" ; Word has been received by His Niece Miss O'Neil 46 Glasgow road Barrhead(Next of Kin) That James McCabe was killed in action, James left for Australia 5 years of ago, He was a farm labourer, he was formally employed at Japson by Mr Bowie and Mr Wilson - He joined up at the outbreak of war, And he also went through South African war, During The present conflict he joined up in Australia
James is commorated at Villers Bretonnex Memorial Villers-Bretonneux Departement de la Somme Picardie,France. James is Listed on St Johns R.C WW1 memorial Barrhead.
James is not listed on the Cowan Park memorial Barrhead.

24th March 1916 Barrhead news acknowledgement section :- "Mr and Mrs Hugh McCluskie and Family thank many friends and the Quitting club for flowers and wreaths and kind sympathy shown at their sad Bereavement " 11 stromylands Street: Father is Hugh McLuskie a print Field Labourer Mother Catherine(nee Craig), sister Mary.
In loving memory of our dear son and Brother Private Edward McLuskie who died 18th March 1916 , on whose soul sweet Jesus have mercy"
This lad is the only Edward McLuskie I can trace with a direct link to Barrhead, He is not listed on the Commonwealth war graves commission as a solider who died during ww1(I am currently trying to rectify that) There is listed on Cowan Park memorial a Edward McG McCluskie and On St Johns a Ed McCluskey.
I do not know where Edward was laid to rest or commemorated
Can anyone help with this lads records?

Pte Micheal Mc Donagh of the Scottish rifles whose mother (Bridget)resides at 2 walton street Barrhead was killed in action on 24th March. He was under second Liuet Marshall Stewart and was killed at the same time as that officer. Pte Mcdonagh was 24 years of age and employed by Messers Saunders and Connor.Mrs McDonagh has two other Sons in the Army;

John Mckenna is listed on Cowan Park and St Johns R.C. Church in Barrhead, I can not find any military records for this Soldier, There is a John McKenna listed below born barrhead

Private Wm Hone Mrs Taylor 140 Main street Barrhead has received intimation that her son-in -law Pte William Hone Royal Scots, who was formerly reported missing on 30th July last is now presumed to have been killed on that date, Pte Hone was 25 years he had been married but his wife pre deceased him and he leaves one child He was formerly employed with Messers Perry and Hope Nitshill Renfrewshire.
William is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Plot: Pier and Face 3 C. Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France, And commemorated on the Nitshill war memorial.

Type of Casualty: Cause of death: Died of Wounds, No 3 Highland Field Ambulance,France and Flanders in the area of Locon of wounds inflicted 19th June in the field, age 30.
Theatre of War: Western European Theatre
Husband of Mrs Catherine Divers O'Connor. : Pte O'Connor who resided at 15 Gladstone ave is reported as having been killed 20th June, he enlisted in the 2/6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in December and was afterwards drafted to the 1st 6th at Bedford, proceeding with that battalion to France the beginning of May. He was for Many years employed in the Tubal Foundry In a letter to Mrs O'Connor Lieutenant Shanks says "Private O'Connor,Was one of a stretcher party helping a wounded comrade back to the dressing station when He was struck by shrapnel, everything possible was done for him but his wounds were fatal, He was a good soldier. And died nobly doing his duty, My Deepest sympathy,That of the officers and men of our own company, go out to you in your loss," Pte O'Connor leaves a widow and three children He was a son of Mr and Mrs James O'Connor 19 Paisley road Barrhead Renfrewshire Scotland.
In 1920 the Army authorities wrote to the Renfrewshire constabulary seeking the whereabouts of the late Soliders wife, Sadly Catherine must have had a breakdown and was reported a inmate at Dykebar, and the Children Mary age 11, Annie age 10 and Francis age 7 where listed as living with their grandfather James at 19 Paisley rd.

"Just a simple tale of valour of a gallant British lad, One that makes our eyes grow dimmer, One that thrills our hearts- though sad. Barrhead news Friday July 14th 1916 In memoriam Pte Edward O'Hara 10th Highland Light Infantry 13th July 1915 his wife was Elizabeth McDermott. Son of Mr and Mrs Edward O'Hara of Glasgow Husband of Elizabeth of 573 Graham Street Barrhead:
Pte Edward O'Hara missing since 15th July 1915. Official intimation has been received by Mrs O’ Hara that her Husband's body was found in La Bassee Canal on July 27th, No particulars are available as to what fortune of war was the cause of his death, Pte O’Hara was in the 10th Battalion of The Highland Light Infantry, He enlisted immediately war was declared last August and left Barrhead for training 14th of that month, He has been in France since the beginning of May, He leaves a widow and two young children. In addition to the official notice Mrs O'Hara has received a sympathetic letter form Corporal J. Willis of the 3rd Coldstream Guards, Who was one of the party which discovered and buried the Body of her Husband In the course of the letter the writer says:- " It is with regret I write to inform you of your Husbands death, He was found drowned in the La Bassee Canal near Bethune ,on the 27th of July and had evidently been in the water some days. We buried him near by and a cross marks the spot where he lies. His papers etc. were handed to the Authorities, so you will probably hear from them in due course.I have enclosed a small cross found on the body as I thought you might like it as a memento of your Husband.with the deepest sympathy form my comrades and My self" The little cross referred to was a gift from a friend which Private O'Hara took with him to France.

In loving memory of my grans father with fierce red hair and loving blue eye's she was only 5 when he passed . Son of Edward O'Hara and Catherine Welsh Now Arthur. Wife Elizabeth McDermott daughters Elizabeth and Catherine.
