James was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal for prom action and courage, By driving and bombing an attacking party of the enemy out of the British trenches. The Germans had exploded two Mines under the British soldiers and heavily bombarded the British lines, After the bombardment they attached the British lines, James when seeing three of the enemy close by him, felled one with a grenade to the face and then kept him prisoner, He then pursued the others and accounted for a second, James set a fine example of prompt courage driving the enemy out of the sap and crater. Courage it seems, was in the Blood of the Flynn Family as Brother Lance Corporal Hugh Flynn of the Royal Scots won the Military medal for bravery just 6 months after his brother was awarded the D.C.M.

There are two Patrick Gallacher's listed on St John's Barrhead and Cowan Park Memorial. To date only one Soldier can be traced with a connection to Barrhead, There was a mistake in the date of death for Patrick Gallacher from Kelburns street, 1st reported 13th April then corrected as 26th April 1915. Additional comments; AN OFFICERS COMMENDATION The Barrhead news reported Sept 1916-Two weeks ago we reported that Private John Graham who resided in Kelburn street had been Killed on 13th Sept; In a recent letter to Private Grahams Mother, his Captain says of him " He was a good lad, and had no fear, He did excellent work on 1st July in carrying messages for his platoon officer under shell fire, and I recommended him for his conduct on that occasion. I shall miss him out the company"
Son of James and Agnes Graham, of 55, Kelburn St., Barrhead, Renfrewshire
John is commemorated at Vermelles British cemetery grave re 11.A 23 Pas de Calais France.
Historical Information
Vermelles was in German hands from the middle of October 1914 to the beginning of December 1914, when it was recaptured by the French. The cemetery was begun in August 1915 (though a few graves are slightly earlier), and during the Battle of Loos, when the Chateau was used as a dressing station, Plot I was completed. It was laid out and fenced by the Pioneers of the 1st Gloucesters, and known for a long time as "Gloucester Graveyard". The remaining Plots were made by the Divisions (from the Dismounted Cavalry Division onwards) holding the line 1.6 kilometres East of the cemetery until April 1917, and they incorporated a few isolated French graves of October 1914. From April 1917, to the Armistice, the cemetery was closed; but after the Armistice some graves were re-grouped and others were brought in (to Plots II, IV and VI) from the battlefields to the East.
There are now over 2134 First World War casualties commemorated in this cemetery. Of these, 198 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to six soldiers from the United Kingdom, known to be buried among them. This cemetery also contains the graves of 11 casualties of other nationalities.
There is only one John Graham listed on Cowan park Memorial
Brother Hugh Graham also died 14th December 1914 age 17 years old. a third Brother James was in the Army also.
