The memorial is inside Tundergarth parish church at OS Map Ref: NY 175 808.

Most (if not all) of those listed also appear on the Lockerbie memorial.

ROBERT BELL, LEICESTER YEO.
Robert Bell – age 24 – Private (2221) 1/1st Leicestershire Yeomanry.
Robert enlisted in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and joined his regiment in France in February 1915. He was shot by a sniper and died in the 3rd Cavalry Division Camp Field Ambulance.
Born 1892 at Bankshill, Tundergarth. Son of Mary Bell.
Grandson of James and Margaret Bell of Bankshill.
Died of Wounds on 26 January 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


SAMUEL BROCKBANK, RFA.
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM and I cannot trace a Service or Pension record.
Samuel Brockbank – age 26 – Shoeing Smith (148225) Royal Field Artillery.
Samuel died at home in Bankshill, Tundergarth.
Born in 1891 in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire as Samuel Gourley.
Son of Ellen (Gourley) Brockbank and step-son of Andrew Brockbank (Blacksmith) of Bankshill.
Died on 6 July 1917 and buried in Tundergarth Parish Churchyard.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


JAMES CARRUTHERS, KOSB.
James Carruthers – age 31 – Private (25869) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was living in Glasgow when he enlisted in the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1886 in Tundergarth. Son of George and Agnes (Kelly) Carruthers of Upper Westwoodand and of Bankshill, Tundergarth.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

William Francis Carruthers – age 23 – Private (22835) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William was a joiner in Lockerbie when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Mesopotamia where he was fatally wounded and buried in Narrows Cemetery.
He was re-interred in Amara after the war.
Born 1893 in Tundergarth. Son of George and Agnes (Kelly) Carruthers of Upper Westwoodand and of Bankshill, Tundergarth.
Died of Wounds on 5 December 1916 and buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

GEORGE CREIGHTON, SCO RIF.
George Creighton – age 28 – Private (40758) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
George had been serving as Private (10901) with the 1st KOSB in India. He returned with his battalion to England before landing at Gallipoli in April 1915. He then served in Egypt and France and at some point transferred to the Scottish Rifles.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of George and Janet (Balmer) Creighton of Roberthill, Lockerbie.
Missing in Action on 21 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

WILLIAM CREIGHTON, MGC

William Creighton – age 18 – Private (158716) 30th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
William enlisted as Private (32742) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers but was transferred to the MGC before he went to France. He was killed days before the Armistice and was buried in Belleghem Churchyard but was re-interred in Tournai in September 1920.
Born 1899 at Beck Cottages, Dryfesdale. Son of Elizabeth Creighton.
Grandson of George and Janet (Balmer) Creighton of Roberthill, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 6 November 1918 and buried in Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension, Belgium.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


JOHN FARRIES, KOSB.
John Farries – age 23 – Private (45226) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John died in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers.
Born 1895 in Tundergarth. Son of William and Agnes (Jardine) Farries of Tundergarth.
Died on Service on 22 November 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

ROBERT JOHNSTONE, KOYLI.
Robert's name was added to the CWGC Debt of Honour Register on 10 October 2018.
Robert Johnstone – age 38 – Private (38515) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Robert was a farmer when he enlisted as Private (23349) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in December 1915. He was mobilised in March 1916 and posted to the 1st Battalion in France in July. He was transferred to the KOYLI in December but evacuated home due to illness in February 1917.
Robert was discharged from the army due to diabetes mellitus in April 1917 and awarded a Silver War Badge (186921) He died of the disease in the family home at Banks.
Born 1881 in Brydekirk, Dumfriesshire. Son of Robert Bell Johnstone and of Margaret (Currie) Johnstone of Banks, Tundergarth.
Died on 3 August 1919 and buried in Tundergarth Churchyard.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the St. Cuthbert's Church memorial in Lockerbie.


JOHN E. LINTON, CAMrn HIGs.
John Edgar Linton – age 21 – Private (S/17249) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was a gamekeeper on the Corrie Estate of Sir Robert Jardine of Castlemilk, St Mungo when he enlisted in February 1915. He joined his battalion in France on 27 May and was killed a month later.
Born 1894 Colmonell, Ayrshire. Son of John and Catherine McGowan (Seaton) Linton of Gibson's Hill, Tundergarth, Lockerbie.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1915 and buried in Chapelle-d'Armentiers Old Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the St. Mungo Parish Memorial in the parish church in Kettleholm and on the Hutton and Corrie Parish War Memorial in Boreland village.


JOHN SCOTT, KOSB.
John Scott – age 22 – Private (2609) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a farm servant at Hazelberry, Tundergarth when he enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB. He was drafted to the 1/5th KOSB and landed with them at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1893 in St. Mungo, Dumfriesshire. Son of Johnstone and Joan (Graham) Scott of Castlemilkmill and of Eskdalerigg, St. Mungo, Dumfriesshire.
Died of Wounds on 12 July 1915 and buried in Skew Bridge Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Trinity Church memorial in Lockerbie.

ROBERT C. THOMPSON, R S FUs.
Robert Copland Thompson – age 30 – Private (23990) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert was employed at Balstack Farm, Bankshill when he enlisted. He went to France after just three months of training and was one of four brothers serving. Robert was initially reported wounded and missing but his burial place was found and he was re-interred in Delville Wood.
Born 1887 in Hutton & Corrie, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Jane (Copland) Thompson of Bankshill, Tundergarth.
Killed in Action on 30 July 1916 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


JOHN TOCHRANE, R SCOTS.
John Tochrane – age 28 – Corporal (59602) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a chauffeur and living at 5 Bruce Street, Annan, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted as Private (22959) in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1916. He was mobilised in March 1916 and served in the 3rd Reserve Battalion until April 1918 when he was promoted to Corporal and posted to the 6th KOSB in France. He was transferred to the 2nd Royal Scots on 15 April but was wounded on 20 May and admitted to the 26th General Hospital in Etaples where he died just over a week later.
Born 1880 in Tundergarth. Son of John and Helen or Ellen (Ward) Tochrane, of Corrie Common, Lockerbie.
Died of Wounds on 29 May 1918 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.
