Help please!
Two brothers on the War Memorial in Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire.
CECIL H. O'DELL, PTE. LANCS. FUSILIERS.
FREDk. G. O'DELL , PTE. ROYAL FUSILIERS.
and I'm trying to work out why they are named there.
CWGC has:
Cecil Henry O'Dell – age 19 – Private (38422) 11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Died 7/6/1917.
Frederick George O'Dell – age 23 – Private (51603) 13th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Died 23/4/1917.
Sons of Alfred E. and Susan E. O'Dell, of 11, Sergeant St., Preston, Lancs.
The brothers were born in Ireland and in 1901 the family were in Co. Mayo
Alfred Edward O'Dell 32 b. Co.Dublin, Susan Elizabeth (Cooke) 32 b. Co.Sligo, Fredk George 7 b. Co.Mayo, Edith Alice 5 b. Co.Meath and Cecil Henry 3 b. Co.Longford.
In 1911 the family (except Frederick) were in Dublin with one additional child John Edward 4 b. Dublin.
SDGW has the brothers enlisting in the East Lancashire Regiment in Accrington. Cecil as 26976 and Frederick as 27667 but their medal cards indicate that they only served overseas post 1915 with their Fusilier Regiments.
Silver War Badge records for 26138 thro' to 28118 in the ELR all have enlistment dates of December 1915.
The brothers are named (I think) on the Preston War Memorial but so far I have not found a newspaper report on their deaths.
Has anyone heard of them? _________________ Ken |

Ken
There is an Alfred E O'Dell of 36 Annan Road Gretna recorded on the 1920 Valuation rolls via Scotlands People.

Father O'Dell enlisted in the R.A.S.C. in December, 1919 (papers survive on Ancestry). Again, address listed is 36 Annan Rd, Gretna. He provides his occupation as accountant. |

Brilliant find Mark!
The pension record shows that Alfred Edward O'Dell came to work as a clerk/accountant at the HM Munitions Factory, Gretna on 7 August 1916 and was employed there until 27 September 1919.
At the age of 44 he signed up at Carlisle for a year as Private ES/50369 & S/8008 with the RASC in December 1919. He was discharged from “H” Supply Company in York on 1/12/1920.
Thanks ever so much _________________ Ken |
