1939 -1945

Capt. Hamish A. Cochrane, K.O.S.B
.
Hamish Archibald Fitz-Gerald Cochrane – age 24 – Lieutenant (156427) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Hamish was commissioned in the KOSB from an Officer Cadet Training Unit on 2 November 1940.
Born 1920 in Edinburgh. Son of Commander Arthur Fitz-Gergald. Cochrane, R.N. and Beryl Irma (Thomas) Cochrane [previously Mrs. Druce] of Rusko, Gatehouse-of-Fleet.
Died of Wounds on 28 January 1944 and buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar. (Burma)
Also named on the Gatehouse War Memorial.


Flt/Sgt. Alex. P. Cliff McCulloch, R.A.F.
Alexander Peter Cliff-McCulloch – age 28 – Sergeant/Air Gunner (1825003) 138 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Alexander was on board a Halifax bomber converted for special duties when it was shot down by a nightfighter and crashed near Halsteren in the Netherlands.
Born 1916 in Chelsea, London. Son of William Edward and Eveline Mary (Howey) Cliff-McCulloch of Kirkclaugh House, Gatehouse-of-Fleet.
Killed in Action – 1 June 1944.
Commonwealth War Grave – Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands.
Also named on the Gatehouse War Memorial and on an individual memorial plaque in Gatehouse-of-Fleet Parish Church.


AB. Alfred Gemmel, Royal Navy.
Alfred Gemmell – age 19 – Ordinary Seaman (P/SSX 35655) HMS Eagle, Royal Navy.
Alfred joined the navy in 1940 when he was just 17. He was serving on the aircraft-carrier “Eagle” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-73 while escorting a convoy to Malta.
Born 1923 in Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Mary Gemmell of Station Cottages, Gatehouse Station.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 11 August 1942 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Gatehouse War Memorial.


Pte. Peter McEwen, Royal Marines.
Connection to Anwoth not known. Possibly:
Peter Leslie McEwan – age 19 – Marine (CH/X 109338) HM Landing Craft Gun 2.
Peter was killed when his Landing Craft, modified to provide artillery close support, was sunk during the landings on Walcheren Island, Zeeland. He was originally buried at Biggekkerke on Walcheren but was re-interred in Bergen in April 1946.
Born 1925 in Winchester, Hampshire. Son of Ronald and Doris Leslie McEwan of Shripney, Sussex.
Died on 1 November 1944 and buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands.


Lieut. Andrew C. McCulloch, D.S.C. Royal Navy.
Andrew Christian McCulloch, Distinguished Service Cross – age 28 – Lieutenant, H.M.S. Laforay, Royal Navy.
Andrew was educated at Charters Towers, Sussex and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He was awarded the DSC for actions in the Mediterranean in preventing the escape of enemy forces after their defeat in North Africa. He was serving on the destroyer “Laforay” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U223 near Sicily.
Born 1915 at St. Andrew's, Edinburgh. Son of Major General Sir Andrew Jameson McCulloch and Lady Esme Valentine (MacKenzie) McCulloch of Ardwall, Gatehouse-of-Fleet and of Hills, Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action/Lost at Seaon 30 March 1944 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Gatehouse War Memorial, on the Girthon Parish Church memorial, now in Gatehouse-of-Fleet Parish Church, on the Lochrutton Parish War Memorial, and on the Beeswing Village WW2 Memorial.


Capt. John Sproat, Royal Artillery.
John Sproat – age 29 – Captain (184013) 113 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
John was educated at Kirkcudbright Academy and was working in the Commercial Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh. He was commissioned in April 1941.
Born 1914 in Gatehouse-of-Fleet. Son of John and Esther (McAdam) Sproat of 22 High Street and of Laggan, Gatehouse. Husband of Margaret Donald (Sloan) Sproat of Edinburgh who he married in 1941 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 26 January 1944 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Gatehouse War Memorial, on the Kirkcudbright Academy Memorial and on the Commercial Bank of Scotland Memorial now in the Royal Bank of Scotland Group Headquarters in Gogarburn, Edinburgh.


Spr. Andrew W McGuffie, R. Eng'rs.
Anthony Welsh McGuffie – age 24 – Sapper (14364022) 626 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers.
Anthony had been educated at Kirkdale school in Carsluith but his family were at King's Laggan in Gatehouse when he enlisted. He was killed by a mine.
Born 1921 in Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of Alexander Thomas and Elizabeth (Welsh) McGuffie of King's Laggan, Bagbie Farm, and of Carsluith Mill, Creetown.
Died on Active Service on 9 May 1945 and buried in Udine War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Kirkmabreck Parish War Memorial in Creetown.
