Throughout, this memorial has remained in its original building.

I was intrigued by the two Italian names on the Roll of Honour: Giuseppe and Nicholas Bonugli. A quick internet search found some interesting background about Giuseppe in the Newtonabbey Times: http://www.newtownabbeytoday.co.uk/sport/more-sport/east-antrim-link-to-1929-giro-uncovered-1-6046338

Name: MORRISON, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Service Number: 41025
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1st Bn
Date of Death: 26/9/1917
Age: 28
Additional Information: Son of William Morrison, of Stranraer; husband of Sara McCulloch Morrison, of Park Lane, Stranraer, Wigtownshire.
Panel Reference: Panel 60 to 61
Memorial: Tyne Cot Memorial

Wigtownshire Free Press (1/11/1917): Mrs Morrison, Park Lane, Stranraer, has received official intimation that her husband, Private William Morrison, Ayrshire Yeomanry, attached Royal Scots Fusiliers, was killed in action. Private Morrison was 28 years of age, and prior to joining the Army in May 1916, had been in the employment of Mr James Robertson sr for fourteen years. Private Morrison also acted as a church officer in Sheuchan Free Church for some time. Preaching in Sheuchan UF Church on Sunday, Rev Thomas Russell made the following reference to the late Private Morrison.

"Today our church is a house of mourning. During the week there was laid away one who was full of years. During the week there also came the sad news of one who was in the full bloom of his manhood. I think it is fitting that I should say a word or two about William Morrison, who in a sense belonged to us all. He was our church officer for a year or two before he had to go, and in that connection I am sure that there was no one who knew him who is able to bear witness ti his hearty and obliging ways. It is really not so easy to be a beadle. He has about as many duties as a Minister, and yet because his whole heart was in the church and its well-being his great concern, he had come to have a very sure corner in every heart. I feel the pain of a personal loss., and the fact that he will never be back amongst us any more. Yet I am glad that I can speak of him as I am now speaking. There was a certain diffidence about him which was very likeable. He was never self-assertive. If you spoke to him about anything, he always said, "I'll do my best", and what was more, in the whole-hearted way he did it. This was not only true of his work on the church; it was true of him also in his daily work as well. We want to understand how much there is to give up. He was not hard tempered, but timid rather, and backward amongst crowds, yet he passed through his term of preparation still doing his best. I often wondered, knowing his temperament, how he managed in the midst of the horror through which he must have lived, he had no love of fighting, he was not ashamed to say he was afraid. Yet he had the highest kind of courage, in which, though afraid, he could compel himslef to face anything. On September 26 he went over and forward with the others, going towards the east and the sunrise. He will not come back; he has enetered into that day which has no night. He was a very loyal soul - loyal to his people, loyal to his friends, loyal in his work, loyal in his church. It is difficult to say how much this place meant to him. If the church was right he was right. He was amongst those who do not use to any extent the phrases of religion, but I am quite certain his heart was in the right place. We are grieved because of his death, but he did not die unprepared. The inmost lyalty to all that was good, the faithfullness, the greatness of his sacrifice, will not be ignored in the great Assize. We are sorry for them who have loved and lost, but for Willie Morrison the fight is ended and the great and abiding peace has come. Well done, though good and faithful servant."

[The item also included Pte Morrison's photograph]
